🎁 🎉Happy 100th Birthday to Taylor Larimore 🎊🎂

Happy, Happy 100th Birthday to Taylor Larimore Please help me celebrate Taylor's 100th Birthday, here at our special Bogleheads.org forum, by posting your special messages/stories to him. I'm posting this a few days early for those who may miss this post but see it a few days late, but be right on time. Taylor was born on January 25, 1924. What changes he's seen in the past 100 years! Can you imagine a world without the antibiotic penicillin? This became available and used widely for treating soldiers during World War II. It was only by the mid-to late 1940s, penicillin became commonly available, for the general public. I only bring this up because my father Jack, who was born in 1933, was hit by a truck when he was six years old, and spok...

Re: Tributes to Jack Bogle

In Rememberance of Mr. Bogle It was five years ago, yesterday, that Mr. Bogle passed, and five years ago today that I learned of his passing. I still remember the devastating feeling of shock I felt upon hearing this news as if was just yesterday. There is no way to fill the void he left us with, though with every post by Taylor Larimore, and Mel Lindauer, and others, we carry on. I feel sad for those who didn't have the opportunity to meet Mr. Bogle, as there will never be anyone else like him. He really cared about people, and made each person he spoke with feel heard, and seen. I have a photo of him I display on the living room wall in my home, that was gifted to me years ago, when Mr. Bogle was very ill with Listeria, a condition most ...

I want to share a link from our Facebook Bogleheads site, of the same birthday wish I posted there for you. https://www.facebook.com/Bogleheads You received 34 birthday wishes there, in addition to the over 100 birthday wishes here, and 8,549 post engagements. I'm not one for statistics, but I feel it's important to share this with you, because we are reaching many young people also, which adds to your legacy and that of Mr. Bogle, spreading the Bogleheads investing philosophy to upcoming generations. Dear Taylor, It's my honor to wish you a Happy 99th Birthday, along with so many here, at our very special, Bogleheads site. (Although your birthday is January 25, I'm posting this two days early to make sure, all who would like to add their birthday wishes can do so, and not miss your special day.) So many people continue to look to you for wisdom, both in regards to investing, and how to live a life of heroic convictions, set by your fine example. "Thank you," seems like such a small sentiment, but that's all we can give you, for your bravery and courage, dating back to WWII, when you were so very young. When many people of nineteen or 20 years of age from future generations would be sweating over being enrolled in the classes o...

Re: My Christmas Gift to You

Dear Taylor, I've thought of you first now, on Christmas Day, for several years after reading your first post years ago about you being a paratrooper in, "The Battle of the Bulge." My daddy was in the Korean War, years after your service, and was also fortunate to have come back. Now and then, he would speak of challenges and hardships that arose in life as, "Character Building Experiences." I can't ever imagine how horrific war can be in real life, as I've only seen things in the movies, which is horrific enough. Thank you for your bravery, and sacrifice, so that the rest of us can live in freedom. Thank you for the gift of your friendship for so many years now; since 1999, when my dad was dying from pancreatic cancer, ...

Dear Mel,

Happy, Happy Birthday to you, my dear friend. 🎊🍰🎁🎂❤️💥🎉🎈

I hope you're having a wonderful day with your family and friends, and that all your birthday wishes come true. I wish the Boglettes, and I could be there to sing, "Happy Birthday to You."

Here's a little poem I wrote and posted for you a few years ago for Valentines Day:

You know there's Mel Lindauer -
Always our man of the hour,
Taught us of "I" Bonds -
Of which we've grown fond,
And compounding interest power!

Dear Taylor, Thank you for your kind, heartfelt sentients. I'm still in awe of what you've written about me, and can't thank you enough, for letting me know. As I stated earlier, you have been like a father to me, along with Mr. Bogle, and Mel, for over 20 years. I feel so fortunate to have met a great American Hero, in you. Happy 97th Birthday, Taylor Larimore

Happy 97th Birthday, Taylor Larimore, "King of the Bogleheads” 🎂🍰🎁🎈🎊🎉❤️ Please join me in wishing Taylor a very Happy Birthday. I just want to share my thoughts with you about this great man. Taylor Larimore was born in Boston, MA on January 25, 1924. Mr. John Clifton (Jack) Bogle, founder of, “The Vanguard Group, Inc.,” referred to Mr. Larimore as, “The King of the Bogleheads.” And with good reason. Let’s start at the beginning. Mel Lindauer, also bestowed with the distinction by Mr. Bogle of being named, “The Prince of the Bogleheads,” along with Taylor, were two of the most prolific posters to provide assistance to anyone who found them at the early forum, “Vanguard Diehards.” (Now known as, “Bogleheads Unite,” at the Mornnigstar si...

Re: Vanguard Abandoning Ship, Developing ‘New Brand Image’ has removed its ship logo from corporate docum

It's interesting to note, Buckley waited until after Mr. Bogle passed to remove the, "HMS Vanguard," sailing ship as Vanguard's logo. IMHO, Buckley never would have had the guts to do this if Mr. Bogle were still here with us. I'm disgusted by this move.

I do very much enjoy wearing my Bogleheads T-shirt, with a beautiful sailing ship, proudly displayed on the back.

I can make an informed decision now. I think I will opt to take it the SS benefit, before I turn 65, so I'll have the

Help with the Math [When to take Social Security vs. Investing]

Hi Bogleheads,

Please help me with the math.

Lets say a person would receive $800.00 per month at age 62, from social security, if they opted to take it early, and had a good chance of a 4% rate of return on the money, annually.

Is it better to wait until age 65 and let's say have $1,000 per month to invest then, but nothing per month to invest during those 36 months of waiting until the age of 65?

Thank you.

Re: Happy Father's Day 2018

Dear Mel, Thank you for your kind words. Katie and I love you too, and can't wait to see you again in October. We're so looking forward to the next BH Reunion, and visiting with friends we've made at past reunions, and meeting new friends. Dear Jesse, How wonderful to hear from you. Thank you for writing, and for your wonderful sentiments regarding my dad. I hope you're having a wonderful Father's Day. It will be so nice to see and visit with you again at the next BH Reunion in October. I truly appreciated your words of encouragement before the last, "Boglettes" performance. 8-) Dear Pistachio, Thank you for writing, letting me know you liked the tribute to my father, and for wishing all the fathers here a wonderful day. Will you...

Happy Father's Day 2018

Dear Bogleheads Community, Happy Father's Day to Mr. Bogle, Taylor, Mel, and all the fathers, grandfathers, and great-great grandfathers here. Mr. Bogle, Taylor, and Mel, have all been like fathers to me since I lost my father to pancreatic cancer back in, May 2000. The passing of eighteen years, has not lessened the void in my heart from missing my daddy Jack. I look back and see how blessed I was to having such a loving father to me, and grandfather to my daughter Katie. Thank you again to Mr. Bogle, Taylor, and Mel, who have been like fathers to me, since my dad could no longer be with us. Each one is an example of character and integrity, and we as a community are fortunate to have them. Here is a link to my favorite photo that I took o...

Let's Wish Mr. Bogle - Happy Valentine's Day

Many people express their thanks year-round to Mr. Bogle, and all he's done for the small investor. It's also nice to have a special day when we can wear our hearts on our sleeves for those we care deeply about. Dear Mr. Bogle, Thank you for being our champion and inspiration for this special forum, and all the chapters of Bogleheads that have sprung up around the United States, and now in many other parts of the world. It's always an honor when we get to see you in person, at our yearly National Bogleheads Meetings, and to see you on TV, as the voice of calm and reason, especially when we feel the need to strap ourselves in, when the stock market takes us on a roller-coaster ride. Here's a little poem I wrote for you: Tulips of yore- Bubbl...

Re: Planning A Trip to French Polynesia - (Society Islands)

Hi curmudgeon,

You wrote, "We were in Cook Islands a few years ago, and my thought was that Hawaii was probably like this in the 1930's."

Wow, this resonated so loudly with me. I'm now looking at photos of the Cook Islands, and they are absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. I'm definitely researching them further.

Hi again stupidkid,

You also mentioned the Cook islands earlier, but I didn't quite grasp the beauty they held, until curmudgeon spelled this out for me.

Again, thank you to you both.

With best wishes,
Kathleen

Re: Planning A Trip to French Polynesia - (Society Islands)

Thank you stupidkid, for writing. It sounds like your trip was wonderful.

Hi researchmed, Thank you for your informative post. I will check out the link and your other helpful suggestions.

Thank you, InMyDreams, The ever-so-fast-changing-weather has happened to me a couple of times in Kauai, and in Florida! I guess it's best to just a wear a swimsuit when you're out walking, and just jump in the wonderfully warm ocean and have a swim too. :happy :happy

Hi boglesmind, Thanks for the suggestion of reading, "South Sea Tales", by Jack London. I will try to do this before I leave for the trip.

Re: National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

Thank you Taylor, for posting this. I've been to the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and it's a solemn, quiet, and respectful place to honor our brave soldiers that remain forever entombed there, in their battleship. As a visitor, you have the chance to view the historic film, with the actual footage of what transpired. Not many people left there with dry eyes. Then you see the list of names of the brave soldiers who perished on December 7, 1941. As you stand there, you can look over the side of the monument and see the U.S.S. Arizona beneath you. I was born many years after this happened, and I won't ever forget what I've read in the history books, and seen on film. Again, thank you for your post. With best wishes for you forever...

Re: Planning A Trip to French Polynesia - (Society Islands)

Thank you flyingaway, for your reply. You wrote, "We were afraid that we might not want to come back to the States if we went to Tahiti." I feel the same way. I've been to most of the islands of Hawaii several times, including Molokai once. I love it there so much. My mother went to Oahu in 1953, when, "The Royal Hawaiian" Hotel - aka "The Pink Palace," was the tallest building around. I'm hoping for that, "Blow me away" experience of unspoiled, remote tropical beauty, like how Hawaii used to be. I have lived on the Big Island for two entire summers. :happy :happy Thank you DrGoogle2017, for your reply. I'll be sure to bring some mosquito repellant with DEET to keep them away. I hadn't read about tha...

Planning A Trip to French Polynesia - (Society Islands)

Hi Everyone, I'm planning a trip to French Polynesia - (Society Islands) and maybe two islands of the Marquesas; Fatu Hiva and Hiva Oa, for my daughter Katie and I. I'm writing to ask if anyone who has traveled to the Society Islands and The Marquesas, have any recommendations as to which airlines, tours, activities, hotels, and restaurants, they liked in this area of the world. We plan to leave in April or May 2018, flying out of Los Angeles, CA to Papeete, Tahiti. From my research I've found a few things: Papeete, Tahiti - This is the big, "hub" of the islands. The airport is located here and where most everyone flies into initially. Moorea - Beautiful, like Bora Bora, but not as built up. Bora Bora - Breathtaking. Beautiful res...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. BOGLE: Let's Get The Party Started One Day Early

Dear All, Mr. Bogle's (Jack's) Birthday is tomorrow, May 8. I thought we could get the party started one day early so we won't miss it, while many of us are at work. Please feel free to let him know how much you appreciate and care about him, by sharing your birthday wishes for him. Happy, Happy Birthday Mr. Bogle, Just to let you know we're all thinking of you, and hope you have a wonderful day with family and friends, and that all your birthday wishes come true. You have given me the gift of knowledge, which has been very empowering for me, with regards to investing prudently in the stock market. As we all know it can be a very scary place without the proper insights. Like I tell my friends, "The stock market is a rollercoaster, so s...
