Re: what to do with I Bonds

Think I am holding and adding.
This thru April might be as good as it gets w/ 1.3% fixed.
You could consider replacing 2022 (assuming 0% fixed) with new 2024 purchase, if you need the money.
Some here are waiting til April to see if the expected fixed rate will go up or down.
If down, they will jump in April.

April looks like hot month for iBonds if it seems like fixed rate will go down.
There is a great website people here talk about. Guy gives good advice and predicts fixed rate.

Re: Federal Farm CR Bks Bond interests showing up in Box 1 instead of Box 3

I do this every year, I have the Fed Farm CR bank bonds in Fidelity as well as several money market funds with various amounts of tax free interest. This first thing you have to do is look up your State rules for the Bonds. In Virginia I think these Fed Farm CR are indeed state tax free. I add all these state tax free amounts up, and then if I recall TurboTax/Virginia gives me a place to enter the amount exempt to be subtracted from the reported interest/dividend totals. If you live in Virginia I can get the details

IRS Publication 559 "Survivors, Executors, and Administrators" will be useful to you, if you haven't already found it. (IRS Publication 550 "Investment Income and Expenses" also has similar information, perhaps using different words and examples if you want additional clarification.) IRS Publication 559 "Survivors, Executors, and Administrators" -> "Income in Respect of a Decedent" -> U.S. savings bonds acquired from decedent You'll want to read that whole section on U.S. Savings Bonds, since there are lots of details that can affect tax reporting, but part of what that section says is this: If the bonds transferred because of death were owned by a cash method taxpayer who chose not to report the int...

iBond Taxes/dec'd taxpayer

So mom passed holding some iBonds (paper+TDirect) which, as executor, I redeemed for the estate. Correct me if wrong, but I am assuming: (1) I can claim interest to Date-of-Death on Mom's final Form1040 (2) Interest income between Date-of-Death and Date-of-Sale can go on Estate tax form How do I enter that properly? considering the Treasury Direct 1099 covers the total interest, and is assigned to the estate, so I have to split up the interest. I know how to calculate Date of Death values (I know how to use the TD calculator). Wow the TD non-unique ID numbers like IAAAA are confusing, and then TD seemed to put them into a new account and re-"number" them for the sale. Yikes. The old paper bond ID numbers seemed better.

I answered yes this year and the income moved from W-2 wages on line 1 to other income from one of the schedules. Taxable income the same either way so don’t think it matters. My imputed income has always been in box 11. Well it probably does matter for one thing, W2 earned income can be used for IRA thus reducing taxable income. I don't remember getting the TT question prior years. Ah, but the difference this year was TT allowed me to photographically enter the W2 via pdf so I am not sure I always filled out Line 11 properly. Thanks above for responses! Sometimes it helps such as cashing saving bonds, some banks require 1+ year account age to do certain things like that. I used BoA quite a lot over the years for various signature guarantees and some things like that, but less often now. If you close the account or change it that can put you back to square-one as a new account owner in their computer's AI eyes...the computer does not know you from Adam, and the branch manager is held to what their computer says you can do.

Re: Should you buy I bonds if Retired

I wonder if the limits on iBond purchases would make accumulation for a retiree impractical? Say a 65 year old retiree does not have any iBonds, instead has a more or less typical 60/40 mix, with some TIPS in the 40, with a total of $2M entering retirement (to keep the math easy). Assuming a couple, moving $20k per year into iBonds would take a long time to get to a meaningful amount. Some here say anything under 5% in a portfolio, or even higher, is just a distraction. Is the administrative hassle, including adding a complication for anyone taking over, or inheriting, worth it? OP here - Thanks for expressing what I am thinking - if the plan is not to cash them out while living and the yearly purchase amount is limited, is it worth doing ...

We thought it said cheaper to pay $30 online at confirmation than at airport, so we did.

What was somewhat maddening, we actually have the Aviator credit card, to get the bags free, but evidently, we only have the lower level Aviator card that does not include bags. I have to check into that, I thought we had an annual fee but yet we do not have the benefits of that for some reason (took a bad deal years ago?). We'd need to get P&G experts in here, but simplified emulsion science is that we only need enough soap to reach the CMC (critical micelle concentration) where the soap molecules clump together in water to form little groups. After the CMC, there is minimal advantage for extra soap. OK so how much soap is CMC? In general less. Liquid soap has one advantage you can apply to stain to get spontaneous emulsification, but recent dirty sock had better results with Shout.

My wife prides herself in quickest possible wash, but I will sometime set it for 15-min soak.

Imputed Income/Turbo Tax Questions

I get a few thousand dollars imputed income in retirement, for life insurance I think. TurboTax insists on me answering the following question regarding the W2 input-

Did you take money out of your nonqualified pension plan?
(We just need to check whether the $2,xxx.00 in box 11 is money you contributed to your plan, or if it's money you took out of your plan.)

(1) Yes, I took this money out of my nonqualified or Section 457 plan, or
(2) No, this is money I contributed to my nonqualified or Section 457 plan.

any ideas? (the income is listed as non-qualified in W2 Box11)

Interesting. When my BIL died, in he had a VG account. We informed VG about the death within a week or so of DOD and they immediately re-titled the account as an estate (and froze it until the court papers were provided). They issued a separate tax statement for each. How nice! Give credit to Vanguard. I had a small complication, on Mom's behalf, I had purchased several Survivor Option CD's and bonds. Although most of the account was cash, Fidelity refused to transfer any funds to the estate until the SO options were cleared, and that required huge paperwork and 6-8 months to complete. In hindsight more trouble than it was worth for a very modest SO position. And once that was completed, Fido said my court papers were over 6-months old and...

Help on Fidelity 1099 dec'd Taxpayer

I am executor for my mothers estate account in Fidelity. Mom died in Feb2023. Before that she had a regular Fidelity account. So the 1099 for mom's interest income should (I assume) be prorated thru February for her tax return, but Fidelity shows the whole year interest to her (since Fidelity delayed account transfer until later).

I called Fidelity to ask about fixing it/prorating it into two 1099's, and the "back office" claims nothing to be fixed, that is just how they do it. Question- do I therefore prorate myself to split between Mom's return and estate return? Actually I have attorney but I am trying to do mom's final return myself on Turbo Tax for him.

I have used Fidelity but not Vanguard in the past for purchasing bonds. Normally they are not selling bonds that lose money, but you could break even if the bond is called soon. But sure, I'd make bets on bonds that might pay off, but might get called. If you bought a 5% callable and interest rates go down, yes they will indeed call them, believe me they will call all of them! But I am not investing unless I at least break even.

I agree with you, more cash would be nice, we are good on IRA money, but it is not free cash yet, and free cash is needed for taxes for Roth Conv. Good and bad news, age of RMD is higher, so yet a few more years to keep money tucked away in IRAs and use free cash to pay tax on Roth conv. At age 72 we'll have RMD and m...
