Re: When is private (elementary) school worth it?

Whether it is worth it seems entirely dependent on what you want for your child. Based on your description, your child certainly appears to be gifted or highly intelligent. Do you want the most academically challenging environment? Do you want a classroom that is diverse with kids from many differen...

Re: Federal employee financial planning question

Welcome to the forum and thanks for your service. Some very good suggestions already. My thoughts as a former FSO: - For retirement savings, you're doing very well. It's good you're maxing out the TSP and Roth IRA. It looks like you just started with the Roth IRA. Depending on your salary and diffe...

Re: IRA Transfer into TSP

I suggest staying all over Vanguard on this transaction. They butchered my request to transfer a Rollover IRA into the TSP. Vanguard handled it very poorly and the agents were not helpful in sorting out the problems. The upshot is that we had a significant amount of money not invested in the market ...

Similar to Summit111, we visited Cuba for about 10 days on a trip arranged by Insight Cuba several years ago. Had a great experience and learned/saw a lot. Don’t think the cruise approach would have been as satisfying. We can 2nd the recommendation for Insight Cuba. It was a cultural educational tr...

Agree with above. I entered Vietnam through Hanoi a few days ago and got the e-visa in advance. It cost about $25 and was super easy.

Re: What is your favorite reasonably priced Rum?

Best rum in Cuba is Santiago 11 year. Awesome stuff at $40 bottle but hard to find even for those of us living in Cuba.

Abuelo from Panama and Diplomatico from Venezuela also outstanding.

Learning: If you want an overseas assignment (and despite what I wrote above, I would not have had it any other way), leave your children at home and retire overseas. I'll respectfully disagree on your kids comment. My father was a US diplomat and I spent a good chunk of my childhood overseas. Reen...

Excess Contribution HSA - Taxes?

My employer contributed too much to my HSA in 2016. At the beginning of 2017 before my tax deadline, I had the excess contribution of $1320 removed from my HSA so that I would not be penalized. The HSA administrator removed the excess contributions and sent me a check for the $1320 excess contributi...

Re: Study Abroad program question

Yes. Absolutely. It is a no-brainer in my opinion. I remember debating whether to do it and ultimately decided not to go for what I thought were sound financial reasons. Fortunately, my mother was much wiser than me and essentially told me that I would be making a big mistake if I didn't do it. It w...

Re: Investing with H1B?

For what it is worth, the legal term cited below, "lawful permanent resident", refers to those that hold a "green card". An H1B visa is different.

An H1B visa is a nonimmigrant visa which is different than lawful permanent residence.

Re: HDHP/HSA Questions

Sorry, I should have clarified. Because we live overseas, there are no in-network providers available. So every time we go to the doctor, we pay up front. And every time we need prescription drugs, we just pay full cost out of pocket. Those are the things I am talking about. The rationale in not tap...

HDHP/HSA Questions

At the risk of asking a stupid question ... I have had an HDHP for a couple of years and haven't come close to reaching the $3,000 annual deductible. Aside from filing claims for preventive care which is covered at 100% by the plan, is there any value whatsoever in filing claims or recording with my...

HSA Bank or Health Savings Administrators?

Through my employer I have an HSA account with HSA Bank. I now have enough of a chunk of money in the HSA that I would like to invest in Vanguard funds. The money is currently earning next to nothing and I do not plan to tap into the account to pay current medical costs. I'm considering transferring...

Re: Pay down mortgage before selling the house?

All -- I'm struggling with keeping up my bond allocation to maintain my desired overall asset allocation. 100% of my TSP contributions go into the G fund but it isn't enough to get me to the percentage I'd like to be at. In addition to the TSP, new money regularly goes into a taxable account (mostly...
