Re: Need a recommendation for an auto transport company

I called Tim Sears' company. TERRIBLE! They were totally incompetent, very rude and down right nasty. I am amazed they are still in business with this attitude. I'm wondering if they are having financial troubles or perhaps even has some type of substance abuse issues. Don't know, but that would certainly explain the attitude of the people answering the phones. Granted, everyone has a bad day, but I called 3 separate times and spoke to 3 different people. It was the same thing each time. Very odd.

Re: Save on Dental cost

After reading this and the other thread on how it is impossible for laypeople to tell if they have a good dentist, it really feels like there is a business opportunity here : some sort of 3rd party certifying authority that utilizes true experts to randomly audit a dentist's patients and actually examine the work that's been done. If the work is above average, they can receive this special 3rd party certification (for a fee). If not, they can't. An interesting idea, but I see some obstacles. How would "true experts" be determined? How would it differ from, or be an improvement on, getting a second opinion from another dentist? How could even an expert determine the quality of, say, a deep filling once it's done, i.e., whether all...

Re: Save on Dental cost

However, it will take 5 years before you know if the new dentist is a good one. I think that's the delemma, we really won't know until we have problems later Even then you won't know. To answer more completely, I guess you would need to define 'problems'. Often times when I would introduce myself to friend or a friend, I would ask them what dentist they used. Then I would ask the person if their dentist was 'any good'. They almost always said yes. Then I would ask them how they new. Typically, the answer was something like...'because he is so nice' or 'because he talks to me' or 'because he has new shiny expensive gizmos'. Never did they answer...'because his crown preps have a spot on perfect 6 degrees of divergence and not 5 or 7, and al...

Re: Save on Dental cost

I have a friend who is a dentist. He once told me that when you go to a new dentist, you will know within 5 minutes whether or not you like the dentist. True! However, it will take 5 years before you know if the new dentist is a good one. Unfortunately that is not true. You (a lay person) will probably NEVER know if they are any good or not. As a matter of fact, some of the WORST dentists have patients that absolutely love them and have been seeing them for decades. Typically these patients think their dentist is a good one. Typically, these patients are incorrect. All dental work is not of the same quality, and I have learned the hard way, that the patient cannot tell how good the work is. Exactly. My present dentist is much more expensiv...

Re: Save on Dental cost

Since I found the information here on this forum that helped me solve my problem, I am posting so that anyone in the same situation can benefit also. In other posts I have explained how my cost for a crown went up from ~$900 to ~$1400. While I was content to pay $900, paying $1400 was such a rip off Depends on who does the crown and what lab/materials are used. With some docs, $900 is a rip-off, with others, $1400 is a bargain. that I started looking for a way to save money. While reading a post here someone mentioned the website "dentalplans.com". It is a consolidator for multiple dental discount plans. I picked out one of the plans and called a local dentist that was listed. I talked to the office manager and asked if I could u...

Saw an article in the paper.

The S4 will have a bigger screen, higher resolution, weigh less, be thinner, have a better camera, faster processor, better battery life and will run Android 4.2.2 (vs 4.1.1 for the S3).

I've got one ordered (in red, of course), no definitive timetable, they say mid to late April. I will be the first chick on the block that has one and will report back to the bogleheads.

I have not settled on a model car to buy at the moment but it is my understanding that it is best to go where the price is lowest. In that case how far afield do you go?

My 99 Camry could go at any time and I just want to be prepared.

Thanks.
Normally (if the dealership is smart) and you have a service history with them, they will give you a better deal than someone out of town. Because, they make back the $$$ on service.

If they aren't smart, and won't match or beat the deal you can get somewhere else, get the vehicle somewhere else. They will still be happy to service it.

Re: How much of a price do you put on vehicle safety?

For example, a new Camry vs a new Volvo S60. The Volvo is safer in terms of crash test worthiness. However the Volvo costs more. I'm always undecided and perplexed about weighing those differences. I've known some people that have been pretty banged up in a car wreck, on the other hand, want to be realistic. What do you do when shopping for a vehicle? What source are you using for the data? anyhow.... I put a premium on safety. (probably comes from my flight training and experience). That said, 'crash tests' are not an exact science and have many variables. The way I look at it, if the crash test results are poor, I wont buy that car. Once they get to really good (4 stars) then it doesn't matter if the car is really good or great (5 stars)...

I spend 5.442% of my *after tax* income on my rent. (I just have a 2 bedroom/2 bath place right now) At this point in time, I am living below my means. In the future, I am considering renting a 4-5 bedroom house so I have more room for my many hobbies. I'm assuming that when I do that, my rent % will go up a tad. :)

I am keeping my fingers crossed for another housing slump so I can get a beautiful house to rent for cheap.

Pine straw is ok. It can acidify the soil, so you need to get a soil test before you use it and then again several months after, but it lasts long (breaks down slowly because of the wax coating on the needles). And if you like the looks of it, great!

Re: Best way to mulch yard?

Here in Denver my local landscape yard lets me pull up to the bin and fill my own lawn bags with fresh mulch. Six 36 gallon bags equal 1 yard @ $32 dollars. I put them in our suv and carry them to any spot I need. I used to do the same thing in St.Louis. Spring is right around the corner. Tim
Sometimes 'fresh' mulch will suck the N out of the soil, so be careful with that. What kind of mulch are you getting (what species of tree and is it bark only or the entire tree chopped up). Also some of the local people who sell mulch get it from overgrowth around highways, utility poles, etc. Those sources can contain TONS of weed seeds, and also contain active plant pathogens ('bad' bacteria, fungi or viruses).

Here are the facts:
She was disabled in actuality on Sep 2009. The SS folks determined that her disability date was Sept 1, 2011, but they did not determine that until about a month ago, (she got back benefits)

Based on this, she should be automatically enrolled in Medicare on Sept 1, 2013. Is that correct?

2nd question,

What does she have to do in order to get the SS folks to move her disability date back to at least March 2011? If she can accomplish that, she would be eligible for medicare right now, yes?

Thanks. (I'm currently on hold with the SS folks, but I'll betcha a pizza I get an answer from the bogleheads before I get an answer from the SSA. ;)

I assume it matters depending on which residency you want to go to and where, yes? How does a potential med student know which schools are the 'average' ones? Just because she is 4.0 and 37 MCAT in college doesn't mean that she will perform as well in medical school. It may have been replaced by the M310, which is $20 or under.
I LOVE these things, I have 4 of 'em.

I just ordered a 2013 Ruby Red Ford Fusion Hybrid Titanium with every option available. It got high grades from multiple sources of data. Evidently they are rare as hen's teeth.

Re: Academy Award Predictions to guide movie viewing

I've decided I want to watch every movie that wins a major academy award this year- i.e. Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress. So who do you think is going to win? (so I can start planning my movie consumption). Here are my predictions: Best Movie: Argo Best Director: Steven Spielberg (for Lincoln) Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis (for Lincoln) Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence (for Silver Linings Playbook) Best Supporting Actor: Tommy Lee Jones (for Lincoln) Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway (for Les Miserables) so do you agree? If so I'm planning to have seen all these movies before the awards come out tomorrow night (I should just be able to get it in). cheers, Prediction for...

Win 7 printer help HP LaserJet P2015

I hooked up my old printer to my new Win 7 machine. But, anyhow, every now and then for no reason that I can determine, the printer prints out a page with the following 2 lines...

Other than being possessed, does anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it?

One of my philosophies is to 'never do anything yourself that you can pay someone else to do for you. Assuming that they will do as good or better job of it.'

And if they don't? Make sure the people selling the house have enough assets so you can successfully bring a civil suit against them.

Not all physicians are 100% correct 100% of the time. I know this for a fact. That's why the gods invented 2nd (and 3rd) opinions.

Sometimes it's a good idea to get one, don't you think?

Re: Buying New Home - Radon

Radon remediation is simple in a newer house. How old is the house and what method of remediation was employed? We don't have the specific remediation details, but it was tested in January @ 4.4. The home is 10 years old. Determine flood damage and evaluate severity. If current conditions are ok don't worry about it other than make sure your sump pumps keep working The damage was due to a sump/power back-up failure during an extended power outage. We're not too concerned with the water. Incidentally, wrto radon, 4 pC/L is the EPA suggested action level. They are not required to do anything. That said, I would want the level close to background (< 0.4 pC/L) just in case. It's at 4.4 pC/L so remediation is required. The house has a sump pump...
