Re: Pimco long term TIPS (LTPZ) yield to maturity

Thanks for the replies. Very helpful. I checked out iShares TIP: https://www.ishares.com/us/products/239467/ishares-tips-bond-etf It shows a “Real Yield” of 0.77, but no “Yield to Maturity.” The SEC Yield for LTPZ and TIP are -2.92% and -3.06% respectively. LTPZ does not show a “Real Yield.” Is ther...

Pimco long term TIPS (LTPZ) yield to maturity

I am interested in moving about 1/3 of my fixed income into Pimco long term TIPS (LTPZ). I will keep about a 1/3 in short term treasuries and 1/3 in total bond market. According to Pimco’s website the yield to maturity is 3.22%. This seems almost too good to be true to get this return for over 20 ye...

Re: Can I claim NYC Residency for Tax Year 2016?

Everyone, Based on the comments in this thread I decided to call the New York State tax helpline again. It turns out that I was given incorrect information the first time I called. Thankfully the person I spoke to was knowledgeable and cleared things up. Here are the details in case someone comes ac...

Re: Can I claim NYC Residency for Tax Year 2016?

Phineas J. Whoopee, Thanks for the reply. It was very helpful. I went through the entire document, and although it is somewhat confusing it looks like I should file a full-year resident tax return (IT-201) based on the eleven-month rule for maintaining a permanent place of abode. This is great as it...

Can I claim NYC Residency for Tax Year 2016?

I have been living in New York City for the past seventeen years, and decided to semi-retire a couple of years ago, but stayed in the City after I stopped working. Last year I decided to sell my apartment and move to Florida full time. My plan was to be a resident of New York City for all of 2016, a...

Re: Automated portfolio construction article on Seeking Alph

Nisiprius, Very good comments so far. It might take a little while, but I will reply to all of them today. First, I will address your comment that Vanguard shows only a 66% chance of being able to make a $54,000 withdrawal from a $1,000,000 portfolio comprised of 54% stocks and 46% bonds over a 30 y...

Automated portfolio construction article on Seeking Alpha

Seeking Alpha recently published an article about an automated ETF portfolio construction tool that I am working on. The article can be seen here: http://seekingalpha.com/article/299073-a-system-for-automated-etf-portfolio-construction-with-risk-management I am interested in any comments or question...

You should run a test by re-doing your 2010 taxes using something like Tax Act or on a borrowed copy of Turbo Tax. You can then compare your results to your accountant’s. If you get the same result, you probably are better off doing it yourself. I use Turbo Tax, and it automatically does AMT calcula...

Transferring Over to the Permanent Portfolio

The Permanent Portfolio is good for people in or near retirement. It is designed to protect assets from fluctuating economic conditions (i.e. bull market, bear market, inflation & deflation). By putting on quarter of your assets in an instrument designed to combat each of one these, you will get slo...

Decking material

I have a friend that built a large deck with Trex, and it is great. You can walk on it with bare feet without worrying about getting splinters and it lasts longer than wood. Highly recommended.

Did you need cash during Irene to pay for something?

Yes, the power went out Sunday morning, and I didn't want to open the refrigerator, so I went out to get something to eat. McDonalds was the only thing open, and their credit card machine was not working, so I had to pay 7 dollars cash for breakfast.

Protecting a startup (IT, legal related)

The United States is a first to invent patent system (as opposed to a first to file system). You need to write up an Invention Disclosure as a first step to protecting your IP. You should Google "Invention Disclosure" to find instructions & templates.
