Pure class. I wear my gshock square usually as my hobbies are outdoorsy. For dress up events I'll wear my seiko 5 or my great grandpas omega constellation.
All solid choices! My only other watch is an old-school G-Shock DW5600EG-9. Love the pie pan dials on the Constellation

Re: solo 401k and 403b max contribs question

I have a 1099 job and W-2 job. W-2 job offers a 403b with no match. I will make 22.5k in elective employee contributions. For the 1099 job I was planning to contribute 43.5k to my solo 401k as EMPLOYER contributions, to get me to the max of 66k across both plans. Can I make more than 43.5k in employer contribs to my solo 401k? I expect to make around 300k pretax for my 1099 job. Because you have a 403b your maximum across both plans is $66,000 total. It would be different if your W-2 job had a 401k, but unfortunately it doesn't. So if you contribute $22,500 to the 403b, $43,500 is the maximum you can contribute to the solo 401k. Check out this calculator to see how much you can contribute to the solo 401k. The solo 401k contribution calcul...

I reached the summits of two different 14ers in Colorado in 2022, one in July and one in September. A young man died a week later on the mountain we summited in September probably due to weather.

You might be able to walk up to Barr Camp (barrcamp.com) at 10K on the side of Pikes Peak.

Re: recommendation for CO hiking trip this month

OP, if you want to do a 14er, or any high elevation (esp above-treeline) Rockies in March, plan to carry snowshoes or skis, an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe, and enough supplies to spend 1-2 nights in a snow cave if whiteout conditions settle upon you. Anything less than that is asking for trouble. "Hiking" and "winter mountaineering" are vastly different disciplines, and hiking experience doesn't get one very far. New Mexico or Arizona may have good "hikes" this time of year. Lower elevations of CO may be fine. I've postholed in a foot of snow -- it's annoying but possible. Postholing in waist-to-chest-deep snow is dangerous. Best wishes. I hear you. I figured it would be too snowy, but I've never been ...

recommendation for CO hiking trip this month

Planning for the week of 3/19. Maybe 4 days.

Flying from San Antonio, so figured easiest to fly to Denver via SW.

Know it will be snowy at elevation. Originally wanted to hike a 14er, but planning to defer that to warmer months. Two of us are fit guys with day hiking experience. I have been to 12,000 feet in some cold places like Glacier NP, Jasper/Banff, AB and have enjoyed it immensely. Have never hiked in CO. Happy to do any safe hikes.

Rent an SUV? Stay at airbnb somewhere near some trailheads? Lodge?

Thanks in advance! I can fill in more info as needed

Hi guys. I messed up 8606 on turbotax for back door Roths somehow. Same error for myself and wife

Line 1 is blank
Line 18 is 6000

I paid excess tax to IRS before realizing I should have 12k less of taxable income.

Do I need to file an amended 1040? Or just send in a couple of corrected 8606 forms with an explanation?

I am swiss (currently living in US) and travelled (mountaineering, skiing, etc.) Switzerland extensively. Just some advice: General advice: * Don't go in Winter unless you want to ski. There is a lot of snow and a lot of the best attraction will be less or not available. Also, the chance to have bad weather (not only cold, but dark and cloudy) is much more likely. Further, driving is more dangerous. * Rent a car. I was just in Switzerland and rented a car very cheaply. Trains are very expensive and you are just more efficient with your time with a car. You only have two weeks and there is a lot to see. * Get vaccinated and bring your CDC card, else access to attractions, restaurants etc. is limited. You also need to go to some agency to ge...

You should definitely spend most of your time in the Berner Oberland region. Lots of cute towns, and stunning mountains. Murren is a cute car free town, and you can have lunch on a balcony facing a giant rock face, with a steep cliff below you. Jungfrau is amazing, and Lauterbrunnen too. Definitely get a train pass, and don't drive. You could make a big circle around Switzerland and go hiking in all of the regions. They all have quite different flavors, like the Appenzell region. You could go to Lugano and get a bit more Italian flavor. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is the most amazing place, it's the highest gondola in the Alps. You can see the French, Italian and Swiss Alps. It will blow your mind. in Outside of Switzerland but close, Anne...

No kids. Plan on hiking a lot. Ok with some snow/cold. Have done previous trips to Canadian Rockies in October when it was cold. Want less crowds. We usually avoid summer travel. Not foodies. Fine with local grocery stores/shops/etc Have enjoyed prior vacas using Airbnb, but fine with some hotels also. Want to do one scenic train ride in SUI I am a history buff including military history, so France and Germany are appealing. Would like to see some castles. We like museums. Re: Saving too much in tax deferred

I presume our annual Backdoor Roth would be nixed after setting up a Roth conversion ladder? Right now my wife and I each have tIRA accounts with $0 in them at Vanguard. We use these for Backdoors. We contribute to 403b, 457b, 401k, defined benefit plan, and a cash balance plan. Between these accounts, we can save $200k/year in tax-deferred. Once we convert any of these to a tIRA to prepare for a conversion ladder, pro-rata becomes an issue and we can longer do annual Backdoor Roths? :confused Most people start the conversion ladder once they have lower or no income, and so no longer need the backdoor. In your case, it may be necessary to seek a Roth version of one or more of your available accounts or to make an effort to save some in tax...

First of all if you aren't going to do N+1 then we have no time for you. But, more seriously if you enjoy regimens such as 20mph for an hour on a Peloton I am pretty sure you would appreciate the light weight and speed of a real road bike. It's just nice. My experience, by the way, is that road bike geometry if properly fitted can be more comfortable, especially for long times, than anything else. You do want appropriate clothing, shoes, etc., from the comfort point of view. You may also appreciate the flawless mechanical function of a decent quality road bike, not that good quality hybrids, mountain bikes, etc. don't also have good mechanics. I would say a drawback of a good roadbike is being in a situation where you can't find good quali...

Are you trying to ride hard and go fast? Then yes, a road bike will be fun, especially if you enjoy the "adventure" aspects (routefinding/exploring, variable pavement, dealing with cars, potential to actually wipe out...) If leisurely 20-40 mile rides are the goal, maybe not. Is anything about your current bike bothering you for those? Also, you need to be a little careful about what a "real" road bike is. A lot of what gets sold are sort of race-styled bikes - super skinny tires, aggressive geometry, too many gears, no ability to fit fenders or bags, and these can be rather unpleasant to ride. I enjoy a more relaxed geometry, fatter tires (35mm+), fenders are a must if you want to ride when the roads are wet (not just ...

I am really impressed if on the hybrid. Try to pick one that makes it hard for you to put it down. If you are inspired to play, you will get better. That is the bottom line. Quality is great with guitars these days. Pick one you will play a ton. Aesthetics matter also, if it makes you more likely to play it. Try different neck profiles, neck widths, and body types. I played a Martin D-18 for a while, then tried one of the smaller bodied Martins (OM) and found it much more comfortable for me. Depending on your hand size and and playing preferences, like thumb over the neck, one neck will feel especially comfortable for you. If you want to play mostly finger style, a 1.75" nut width may be great. I have that on my OM-21 Special and the wider spacing is great. OTOH, the Martin ...

Help with picking vinyl plank for exercise room

Hi. We are considering replacing our carpet with vinyl plank for an exercise area. The area is a miscellaneous landing that is upstairs, contiguous with the end of the stairs. About 300 sq feet. Also we would do the stairs with the same plank.

What should we consider regarding thickness, other factors, etc? I was considering buying material from Build Direct and paying for install. We put in wood grain tile downstairs last year and would like the use the same installers; they did a great job.

Thanks!

Interesting topic. What is your benchmark to move? Do you have to pay cash to buy the next house? From your question it sounded like you were going to take out a ~400K mortgage and pay 600k cash on the 1 million. What if you just saved up 20% and took out an 800K mortgage (200k down) and then use the sale of your current house to take it down to ~400K mortgage? Then you can just make extra payments to the mortgage and don’t have to worry about the market going up or down. Or you could invest the extra payments in the brokerage and pay off when you crossed the remaining mortgage threshold. Just thinking you could just plan your life to live where you want and not worry if the market goes up or down. You’ll pay the mortgage off when it gets ...

You might want to consider fixed annuities. A fixed annuity is an insurance contract that pays a fixed rate of interest for a "set term", usually ranging from one to ten years. After the set term, a new fixed rate is offered for the next term. One popular form of a fixed annuity is a "multi-year guaranteed annuity", or "MYGA", also referred to as a "CD annuity". A fixed annuity has two main phases, the accumulation phase in which you invest money into the annuity, and the income phase in which the annuity may be converted into income and payments are received. Earnings within the contract are tax deferred, and are taxed upon withdrawal at income tax rates (similar to qualified retirement plans) and s...

Re: where to park $ for next house (in next 5 years)

My wife and I are in South Texas. Current house is owned outright, value $400k. In next five years I expect we will upgrade and purchase a house around the $1M range. Would prefer no mortgage. We have US Large Cap and Intl index funds in taxable. Thanks! If you can afford the capital hit if the stock market were to decrease 50% a month before you need the money, continue with this plan. If the money needs more safety than that, best consider short-term bonds or FDIC insured accounts. Thx Bolder. In event of a market calamity I presume we would wait another 6mo-12mo for recovery, o...

Re: convertible note for medical device investment

To the OP: you received some good input from Aude. Based on the limited information provided, it sounds like this is an early stage company financing, perhaps a company that does not even have a completed product or any sales. I have invested in early stage companies through a convertible note, and every time I've done it I have been able to fully absorb a complete loss of the investment, as it is a very high risk investment. That is the only way that I would think about this type of investment, it is high risk, and, potentially, high return. Perhaps as people in the field you can evaluate the merits of the medical device, although success will be dependent on many other factors, including the ability of the management team, regulatory iss...
