you don't have to file business, you can use schedule C for this kind of things. If you register there are lot of activities you have to do in terms of book keepings, fees to pay etc. Better go with schedule C

I keep one account for both of my kids, it is just managing few account is easier then multiple. In my case the gap is three year, but hopefully should be fine, you can change the beneficiary at any number of time in a year.
