JW,

That is an excellent suggestion, and it makes sense for me going forward. Thanks.

Re: Help with Vanguard Management

Thanks to everyone who tried to help. It seems I was unclear. The problem existed, and it was caused by Vanguard. They are rolling out the "upgrades" on mutual funds and the transition away from Prime Money Market as two separate processes. As of last week, my mutual fund IRA did not have the upgrad...

Help with Vanguard Management

I'm afraid I might have posted this under the wrong topic, so please feel free to move it. I am having a serious problem with Vanguard policies, and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to who at Vanguard to talk or write to. My current Flagship representative has been on the job for about...

Re: Carry on luggage

If you want a carry on without wheels or specifically a convertible backpack, I would second the recommendation of Tom Bihn, mentioned previously in this thread. http://www.tombihn.com There is sometimes a wait for what you chose to purchase, but the design and craftsmanship are beyond compare. Chec...

Re: Inherited jewelry and have no clue how to liquidate

We used CIRCA to sell inherited jewelry we did not want. The transaction was painless -- they came to the site of our safety deposit box and gave us a check on the spot. We were already equipped with a separate appraisal made for estate tax purposes. We expected to lose money over the estate tax val...

Re: Seeking advice in a hostile office now

Regarding the costs of a consultation with the employment lawyer I strongly recommended: They are unlikely to work on a contingency basis for a consultation. Free advice is worth what it costs you. However, any money you spend now for advice (note: I am not at all suggesting that you litigate in the...

Re: Seeking advice in a hostile office now

Find a really good employment lawyer. In CA you should be able to find lists of "Best Lawyers" broken down by areas of specialization, like we have in NY. Don't panic. This is a prophylactic measure. What you want is a consultation. The reason you want a lawyer on one of these "Best" lists is first,...

GE Capital Bank

I was looking at Bankrate for a new place to park some short-term savings, and GE Capital Bank looked to pay a decent rate (1.05%) plus Bankrate gives it a 5 star rating for safety, so I applied online. My mind is bogled! After filling out all my information, picking a user name, picking a password,...

Re: How to admit/should I admit alcohol problem to employer

It can't hurt to start with a good employment lawyer plus trusted physician. HR is not necessarily your friend. They are there to protect the company. The employment lawyer and physician have only your interests at heart, and are legally bound to keep your confidence. There are good things you can g...

This sounds like the plan is for "rehab" after surgery, which is very different from long-term care in a nursing home. In my experience, "rehab" includes daily work with physical therapists. What we did for my mother when she was in a rehab facility after breaking a hip (a very nice, almost hotel-li...

Re: Inherited bonds and bond unit trusts

I may be missing something, but it appears to me that you are attaching no value to the fact that these bonds are in IRA's, which are, I assume, eligible to become Inherited IRA's. I can't imagine that anyone would discount the value of additional space to accumulate while deferring tax. That said, ...

Re: A $1000 lesson on how manipulative salespeople can be?

Nearly all of us have made similar mistakes. Mine was a $6000 piece of Chihuly glass. It sits in my living room as a constant reminder of how not to get taken again. Have you checked the value of that Chihuly glass recently? I'm wondering if it might not have increased substantially in value... per...

Re: A $1000 lesson on how manipulative salespeople can be?

Not all sales people are bad. In my youth, I held a number of sales jobs, including telemarketing jobs. I always looked at my job as "helping the customer get what they wanted." I actually believed in the value of the products/services I was offering. I was pretty successful, and I never had an unha...

I wouldn't move. I would use both. In fact, I do use both. I like Fidelity and Vanguard for different things. If I weren't too lazy to move things around, I would hold all of my individual stocks that I wasn't planning to trade at Fidelity. I prefer Fidelity's customer service. And at tax time, I *f...

Re: Banks With Higher Interest Rate Savings Accounts/MMA

I've been using Ally for a while and I have no complaints. What I like is that when you renew a CD (even their 11 month no-penalty CD) they give you a slightly higher rate, not available to the general public, as a loyalty bonus. They did change their favorable early withdrawal penalty provisions, w...

Also, I may be wrong, but it sounds to me like the assets in question (certainly the IRA and the TOD account, and probably the annuity) transfer outside of probate and are not the Executor's responsibility.

Re: Helping with deceased parents' assets

Inherited IRA's need to be handled in a very precise way (and the rules are even more complicated if it is someone other than a spouse who is inheriting). In my experience, the Vanguard reps were clueless and our mother's account exec at Merrill Lynch was equally clueless, and almost helped us right...

I'm looking for a place to park short-term funds inside a Vanguard IRA. Since the money market account isn't paying anything, I'm hoping to find a better place.
