I was torn between the Pixel 6 and the S22 options. The Pixel was buggy, and the S22 battery life was notoriously bad. Ended up getting the Pixel 5a. Amazing battery, consistent fingerprint reader, no bugs. Happy days.

Thanks all. I interpret the above to mean:

In Question 1, the original three lot prices apply.

In Question 2, if you apply for revocation with the broker, and they agree, then 2(a) is the answer: just as with Question 1, the original three lot prices apply.

Selecting Specific ID for covered and noncovered shares

Fellow Bogleheads, Here's a tax puzzle for the community, since I’m finding the IRS publications and their interpretation a bit confusing and inconsistent. Assume a mutual fund with the following purchases, with no sales having ever been made: Jan 1, 2005......100 shares......$40/share......(noncovered) Jan 1, 2007......100 shares......$30/share......(noncovered) Jan 1, 2015......100 shares......$20/share......(covered) 1) If the fund company shows you haven’t established a cost basis method, and you now select Specific ID, do you get to maintain all three lot prices separately as listed above, without having to average anything? 2) If the fund company shows average cost as the cost basis method for whatever reason, and you change it to Spe...

It's a 2% yield with a roughly 20 yr duration. Meaning if you earn interest for 10 years, and the yields drop 1%, you break even (approximately). Not an exciting prospect.

You can split the difference by having both short- and intermediate-term fund holdings, thereby become a limited-term person. If you were sitting in long-term right now, I'd probably think about whether rotating into more short- and intermediate-term holdings might make sense. But in your situation, might not make sense to do much of anything.

The general thought it that the added return isn't commensurate with the added risk over time. That said, in flight-to-quality situations, long-term treasuries have performed admirably compared to their shorter-duration brethren. Both can have their place in a well-balanced portfolio.

For chewing the wrong things, have toys at the ready that you can stick in the dog's mouth so it knows what is ok to chew. And be prepared for that not to work.

Agreed with the forum that Jack Walker Black is as satisfying, complex and consistent a blended scotch as anything comparable on the market, and it's been that way for decades. Red label is not nearly as interesting, and Green label is actually a blended malt (all malts, no grains) and has not been consistent at all historically in my opinion. If it's a blended malt you want to try, I'd suggest Monkey Shoulder, which is affordable and as close to an all butter pound cake as scotch gets.

In any case, however you choose to whiskey, do it with magnificence.

I'll step in as an owner for about 15 yrs, and my DW many years prior. Regardless of what charts will show you, occassionally is does track the idx500, but often times it does zig when the market zags, so it has helped from a diversification perspective. It has also performed extremely well over the very long haul, even with its lofty expense ratio, and so until the big dog actually leaves his management position there, it will remain in our portfolio.

However, if i was starting fresh, I would not bother. The Idx500 is all you need for large cap.

Consider that VTABX is currency-hedged, and so a comparison to VBMFX (vanguard total bond) might give some apples-to-apples perspective (maybe not exactly, but more like Fuji vs Gala, good enough.) Over the past 6 years (when VTABX existed) VTABX returned 4.59%/yr, whereas VBMFX returned 3.37%. The most that the returns diverged in a given year was about 3%. So the returns aren't massively different, nor are the annual deviations, but this is over a short span of time, and you may like the comfort of diversifying across different companies that US indexes do not have access to. It also likely depends on whether you think bonds should serve only as the ballast of your portfolio, may in the long term become a significant driver of your portfo...

Re: Where to invest new cash at this time of all time high market

My two cents. Just from personal experience, I find that people who decide to keep an amount in cash for a period of time tend to keep that cash balance for much longer than they anticipated. There's a certain paralysis that occurs when holding and waiting. You thing you're waiting for one specific thing (investing $x each month) but you end up finding other reasons to wait. And also, it'll take a lot more brain power than you initially anticipated to end up allocating the whole amount over a long period of time. The benefit of doing any of this is of course unknowable. For these reasons, I would allocate based on your allocation ratio on day 1 and be done with it.

Good question. Might want to check out VBLTX which is an index fund mixing long term corporates (60%) and long term treasuries (40%). It has enough swing with equities in volatile times to create clear triggers to rebalance, and also has a good long term return profile. I've been happy with it, and find it an important component of my overall portfolio. Good luck.

Re: Moved to Vanguard this year. Set target allocation. Now significantly outside target range. Now what?

Many are in a similar situation as the general boglehead way is to keep stocks in taxable and bonds in tax-deferred. When the stock market is as strong as it's been, you are bound to run short of stocks to sell in tax-deferred space. So the question becomes, do you suck it up and pay the Long Term capital gains taxes that you will eventually pay anyway and forego any future gains on those tax dollars, or accept a riskier asset allocation. I'm leading the witness a bit for sure, but please be aware that the latter decision is an inconsistent one, and the result could be that you lose the additional stock allocation in a downswing, or will potentially face a more dislocated asset allocation next year and have to stress over the same decision.

Re: Should fixed income percentage stay the same in current environment?

It is no accident that the worst yearly return of Total Bonds, ever, was -2.8%, in a year described as a "bond massacre". Numbers like -50% simply don't belong in a bond discussion. This is exactly what I'd like to see less of. The ten-year just dropped 10% a few years ago and another 10% a few years before that. Those same treasuries more than doubled in value in just a few short years during my lifetime, and years of double digit gains have been commonplace for as long as I can remember. And this does not account for corporates or agencies which account for large portions of most bond portfolios. Such a precipitous drop as I've expressed as being a potential risk may be unheard of, but it should not be disregarded, nor should i...

A return to yields from that period may but would not necessarily coincide with a larger decline in stocks. And I would not assume that anyone asking about the inherent risks in low yielding bonds, and who experienced a price decline of that magnitude, would continue to hold or buy more bonds in order to get par, particularly if they did not anticipate such a move was possible in the first place. That's the rub.

As much as I like this forum, I never liked the ever present view that bonds somehow are less risky than stocks in the event of a market dislocation. Consider that a "low cost, high quality" intermediate term bond fund yields about 2% while 20 some odd years ago the same fund would have yielded in the low teens. With a significant macro event, and a fund duration of say 5yrs, you would suddenly be faced with a drop of 50% or more. Wish that possibility however unlikely wouldn't continually be so easily ignored.
