Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
We just finished watching Humphrey Bogart in: The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep and The African Queen. Those movies are all hailed as so great, but tbh none of them did a lot for me. Maybe the hype pushed expectations too high? For me, it's the production quality of 1930s-1950s films that puts me off. I haven't seen any of the above films for that reason. That plus on the whole, acting and directing wasn't as polished as it is now...but I always try to take that into account with older movies. There are old movies I thought were truly great, like Casablanca...but with those three, I came away not getting the praise. The Big Sleep was directed by Howard Hawks. John Huston directed The Maltese Falcon and The African Queen . Hawks, Huston and...

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Just started the sting. About a half hour in. Spectacular. I’m sure everyone’s already seen it but if you haven’t you should. The music itself is famous. Also, it has Robert Shaw. He is a master at playing the heavy. See him in From Russia with Love (my favorite Bond movie) and in Jaws . It goes to show you what a movie can be. Not Barbie. Not another Avengers movie. But what movies are capable of doing. Things we hardly see nowadays and have not seen regularly for dozens of years. Like those old 1950's screwball comedies. "Show don't tell." All those movies have tighter than tight writing. In one scene you know who everyone is and where everyone stands. Acting is fantastic. Plot doesn't have massive holes that you say "a no...

Re: New Book on the Life Cycle Model - "The Missing Billionaires: A Guide to Better Financial Decisions"
Considering the interest rates, market valuations, inflation, im trying to come up with a current asset allocation based on the book. I think it would be heavily bond weighted... The book i think gives more credence to Vanguard's most recent annual return projections which is heavily bond weighted...Any thoughts of where we are currently and how the book would recommend allocating? I read the book, got a bit lost in the math nomenclature. That being said, I frequently found myself thinking that the whole book seems to reduce to two concepts: 1. Volatility Drag: it takes 100% gain to comeback from 50% loss, 50% gain from 33% loss, 33% gain from 25% loss, etc. 2. The behavioral finance finding that the pain of a loss is twice as great as the...

Poor Things. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and based on the novel by Alasdair Gray. I amost skipped this one because I did not care for the director's movie The Lobster (2015). But, for the most part, I enjoyed this one. Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo are all very good. I think It goes on for too long, and the material is hit and miss, but overall it's quite entertaining. Some viewers may find it to be too silly.

Killers of the Flower Moon on Apple TV, rated R, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, 2023, crime / drama / history, 3 h 26 m long. When oil is discovered in 1920s Oklahoma under Osage Nation land, the Osage people are murdered one by one - until the FBI steps in to unravel the mystery. A very good drama, well acted. This movie won a ton of awards. I liked it - but the movie could have been shorter. Saw it last night. 3.5 hours of watching Leonardo DiCaprio being dumb is about 3 hours too long. ... Haven't seen the movie yet, just previews, but based on the excellent book that I've read, I doubt that DiCaprio, with those piercing eyes and sensitive, intelligent expressions, could ever 'be' Ernest Burkhart, at least not compared to a photo of...

Killers of the Flower Moon. Director Martin Scorsese seemed to be in decline with his The Irishman (2019). But he's back on form with this very strong new movie. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone. It will certainly not be for everybody: It runs three hours and twenty-six minutes and tells a very sad true-life story. The villainy on display is off the charts, and it gives DiCaprio and De Niro the opportunity to act up a storm. Lily Gladstone is also excellent. Don't be surprised if this movie wins a lot of Oscars.
Highly recommended.

Robin Williams, 1983. Some very poignant moments I had forgotten about. And films from that period are interesting in that the street scenes, cars, etc, are becoming historically interesting, offering a rare glimpse of what still seems perfectly normal to me but I can see how younger folks look at the same and shake their heads in disbelief.
It was one of the last of my Netflix DVDs, as they just ended their DVD mailing service last week.

From the 70s on DVD, The French Connection , which I hadn't seen before. Not your average cops-and-crooks movie, the cops are as bad as the crooks. The gin-soaked rageaholic Popeye Doyle tramples on 57 varieties of civil rights, and never actually catches the crooks. Has the greatest chase scene in the history of movies. I was pleased to see two '70 Buick Electra 225s, like one I used to drive, but mine was a two-door. The director, William Friedkin, just passed away, so his movies have been much in the news. If you haven't seen it, Sorcerer is quite good. It famously bombed in part because it came out two weeks after the first Star Wars, but, after watching it, it was never going to be as big. I recommend the 1953 film The Wages of Fear ....

Talk To Me. The first-time directors of this new Australian horror film seem to be making a minor splash. And I will admit there is a fair amount of talent on display here. But the level of grotesque violence makes for a very unpleasant experience.
