If you want the problem fixed FAST, just take an ax and chop the cable through. My neighbor did that when a seismic crew ran a cable across our property down on the coast. I've done this before but placed a few large towels in with the shoes just to keep the shoes from banging up my dryer and to baffle the noise. I don't recall any shrinkage of the shoes, at least any noticeable shrinking. Worked fine and shoes always fit afterwards.
