Ah good, I just noticed that one of my main annoyances with the new Vanguard UI appears to be gone.
The cost basis page once again lets me expand the list of individual lots for each security, all without having to go to a separate page for each security.

Re: Vanguard Announces CEO Retirement and Appointment of President
I was going to blame Vanguard's new UI issues on the Angular library, since I've had to work with it for years and it generally annoys me.
But I checked and Fidelity's UI is implemented with the same library. So I guess it's not the tool but how you use it
(I'd still prefer plain HTML/CSS with server-side rendering over all this dynamic Javascript stuff)

Re: Vanguard Announces CEO Retirement and Appointment of President
The point is they did spend lots of money on a new UI. They just built a bad UI. Bad in so many ways as described in this thread and others. It doesn't seem that bad to me. A little annoying at times, but nothing I can't get around in a few seconds. Fidelity's auto-expanding of a row in the Positions table when I click on it to copy some text annoys me as much as anything on VG's site. Though actually I forgot - VG's new search autosuggests are junk, and probably a little more annoying that Fidelity's divs popping open. I hate the need to accommodate mobile. Web design and development was much better when small screens didn't have to be taken into account. I think the pinnacle was early 2000s style pages with as much date crammed onto them...

It does seem like Vanguard has historically avoided spending money on UX though. IIRC, they still had an analysis tool on their site using some outdated technology (can't remember if it was a Flash app or a Java applet) years after every other site had moved on to something newer.ClevrChico wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2024 9:17 amI don't believe any of those asks require more money. A bad UX design isn't cheaper than a good UX design, for example.
Not that I minded, it worked for me. I don't do mobile access or anything like that, so I would've been fine if they never redesigned the UX in the first place. The 2014 Vanguard site design was better than the 2024 site design in my book.

Now granted, the fact that VTIAX has only grown 70% over the past 13 years versus VTSAX growing 370% in that same time is somewhat demoralizing.
But I decided to stick with this allocation for 30 years back in 2011, so I'll see where things are at 17 years from now.
I've got a decent amount of AVUV and AVDV, and I'll continue investing in both of those during that time.

I've had it for 10 years and I'll keep it for 15-20 more, then decide if I want to simplify for retirement.
Or maybe if they go on a really good run for a few years like the mid-2000s then I'll evaluate again.

It seems to me that some current Bogleheads are defining Bogleheads as those who have a NW of $XXX, or are in the top 10% of NW, or some other specific demarcation of NW. When Bogleheads started out, it was specifically and overtly stated as applying Boglehead principles (as explained in " The Boglehead Guide to Investing "). Following these principles could lead to reaching a high NW. These principles could be applied by anyone of any income or any NW. I have watched this evolution of (implied, implicit) meaning over the years with disappointment, as I suspect it is offputting to many Bogleheads of modest means who are asking for advice or information. It's kind of seemed that way all along to me. Even in the early 2010s I remem...

Yeah… I remember thinking, “well, this recovered way too fast. We are all surely screwed..”. And then I did nothing. Thank god. I thought the same thing. The US market has done quite well over the last 10 years, much better than I expected. But other things have done even better. In 2013 a guy I know said that everything was going to crash and that I should put all my money in Bitcoin. He was wrong about the crash, but I'm still working and he retired in his early 30s as a multimillionaire. I also had the chance to buy a property that year for $300k but could barely afford the payments, so I passed. And now I could easily afford the payments and it's worth well over $1M. Once pension kicks in at age 65 and SS shortly thereafter, they should be enough to cover my normal COL. So things should get easier if the previous 10 years was rough.
And I could keep working too, if my brain can handle it. When I first joined here I dreamed of retiring at 40 or 45, but over time this forum knocked some sense into me. I save as much as I can, assume the worst, and moved my goal to 55 but could move it back to 65 if needed.

It means you worked too long and saved too much..... Ask me how I know. Firecalc says i am at 100% with the odds of leaving 3 to 7 times more than i retired with.. I don't necessarily see this as success. I am not going to lay on my deathbed wishing i made an extra million. I may wish I retired sooner and stopped working "one more year" and had more life experiences outside work or spent more time with family. I'm torn by this. Even though I haven't retired, future FIRECalc/cFIREsim projections are that I'd end up with 3x if I live to 75 and 6-8x if I live to 95, even while giving maximum tax-free gift amounts to a handful of people for a couple decades. Maybe now that the whole site redesign seems to be done, they'll have time to work on less pressing issues like that.
I checked my Fidelity account to compare and I can't even find any historical data about my account beyond 2 years ago, and no RoR numbers at all. It's probably in there somewhere but not in the 10 or 15 pages I checked.
Ahh there it is, hidden under a "..." link on the main page. Fidelity defaults to monthly but does let me select daily if I want it.

Re: Good riddance to bad rubbish - 2022
I have no hopes of 2023 being any better.

Re: Share your networth progression
Haha, I just saw this thread bumped, went to check my old comment here, and saw you just commented again today. Congrats on making it to the point of posting here!stoptothink wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2016 3:49 pmMy wife and I are in the 95th percentile for net worth in our age groups on every calculator I've ever played with. Here; I'm not even going to bother posting.zaboomafoozarg wrote: ↑Wed Nov 16, 2016 9:42 pm I thought I was doing alright until I read this thread, LOL.
I have not yet, but maybe in 20 years. I used to dream about early retirement but I'm starting to realize that's meant for people with a lot more ambition than I've got. If I can get out by 60 I'll consider that a win.

Spending will be for my nieces and nephews. They're hopefully going to have way more fun in life than me.Lee_WSP wrote: ↑Mon Dec 26, 2022 11:17 am 90k of QDI requires a lot of money invested. What's the point of having worked and saved so hard to not spend it?
Also, no conversions? How long are you going to milk the zero tax lifestyle? Don't let the tax tail wag the dog. There's more to life than paying no taxes.

Re: Are We in a new Regime? (Blackrock 2023 Global Outlook)
I do feel like the good days are over.
But I guess I would rather be working during the bad days than retiring at the start of them.
Maybe the good days will come again in 10 or 20 or 30 years.

I prefer "a 20% loss won't matter in 50 years because I'll be dead".Hyperchicken wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 12:23 pm People love coming up with concepts and ideas that help them coping with loss.
It won't matter long-term, everything that happens happens for the best, etc., etc.
If you lost 20%, you will have 20% less forever, before counting new contributions.

Re: Bogleheads Mostly Employees?
I'm both full-time W2 as well as a side job that takes up my weekends.
The only way I can keep up with the Bogleheads Joneses is to work two jobs!
Even with that, my income and net worth is probably behind where it should be.
