Re: Bank of America declares 'the end of the 60-40' standard portfolio

Per Buffet:

"He has said that in his will, he offers these instructions for the money left for his wife: "Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. (I suggest Vanguard's.)"

Only Wellington and Wellesley in retirement portfolio. Is that a good idea?

I have been thinking about having only two funds in my retirement portfolio, Wellington and Wellesley.

1. Keeping things simple.
2. They are both actively managed so no re-balancing will be needed on my part.
3. They have a long history of performing well (I know..no indication of future returns.)

If so, what would be the proper asset mix relative to age(50/50)? Thank you bogleheads.

My understanding there there was a difference between a lock and a so called freeze. But in Transunion's case, they seem to be marketing the lock as something that you can control.

For those that are not getting through online and are getting error messages to just keep trying. Eventually I got through online.

Re: Costco vs. other wholesale clubs

Companies like Walmart can pay a higher wage but they would have to raise prices and decrease employee headcount which means the customer pays higher prices and have to wait in line because of fewer cashiers. Costco makes their money on membership fees and they probably get a merchant discount for using Citibank exclusively. So the model can work if it is sustainable.

Re: 401k question

You didn't tell your age but the real question in my mind to anyone asking this question is why wouldn't you contribute to a plan always? The match is reason enough to say nothing of the tax advantage for years. Looking for something to out perform the S&P is not relevant nor is the fact that you may not have an ideal mix of funds with ideal expense ratios. If you're young you're going to have other plans with other companies during your career. Your company could change to a better plan. Who knows? Fund it. The plan my company offers isn't ideal and it pisses me off and I've hoped for the past 10 years they would change it but I've funded it to the max for the past 15 years and have no regrets. OP here. If I were to choose an active f...

Re: Costco with a "gentle" bump for memebership

I think for family shopping needs, nothing will beat prices at a wholesale club vs. retail. (ie. buying in bulk will always be cost effective). I think the calculation should be based on when does the membership fee become more expensive than the savings. if you are spending $100/150 per month, it should be worth having the membership.

Re: 401k question

The best advice I received from a co-worker when I started my job with a 401k employer match was to contribute at least up to the match as it is "free money". Since at that time I was a novice investor, I allocated 100% of my contribution to the target date retirement fund. After I learned more and realized I can lower ER by allocating set percentages to index funds in my 401k, I switched out of the target date to S&P 500 index getting largest percentage and the balance was filled with index funds consisting of mid cap blend, small cap blend, international, and bonds. Gradually with pay raises and bonuses, I contributed more than the match and I rebalance once per year. For me, a lot of my knowledge about er, indexing, passiv...

Costco vs. other wholesale clubs

[Thread merged into here, see below (next page). --admin LadyGeek] I have a Costco membership as well as a BJs membership. Why does Costco have such a loyal following? Is there even a name for the Costco shopper like a Costcler? I have researched online and read that shopping at Costco is like a treasure hunt but I just don't get it. When you walk into Costco, it feels like any other wholesale club (ie. big warehouse, bright lights, huge industrial racks etc.). I like that Costco has no coupons, this tells me that their prices are close to what they pay. Membership costs are about equal. I have bought Kirkland brands and compared it to Wellsley Farms (BJs house brand) and nothing stands out. I have tried the $1.50 hot dog and I do admit it...

I am considering their 401k plan. The company will match 6%.
The er ranges from 0.72% (high) to 0.04% (low).
The 0.72% is Fidelity Contrafund. 0.04% is US equity index fund. There is a mix of large caps, small caps, international funds, bond and blended funds.
I haven't seen anything that outperform the S&P 500. Should I contribute?

hi, OP here. I wanted to post the components that I bought for my Win7 build. I'm sorry for the delay because I had to spend a couple nights putting it together and one final night for Win7 install and testing. Glad to report no major hiccups. I use my PC daily for web applications, MS Office and YouTube/Hulu viewing and Ebay. For the components, I chose AMD and Asus because I have experience with these brands in the past and was very satisfied. Most were purchased on Amazon with Prime shipping. I also comparison shop on Newegg and TigerDirect as well. The CPU I chose was the AMD FX 4-Core Black Edition FX-4300 . +1. I think the states really level the playing field against amazon. This is my first time on Prime, before that I would bundle my purchases and even though it took a while, it wasn't anything that I really needed in two days. I also thought that Prime would offer cool movies for free but most of them I have already seen using Redbox and I still prefer watching Hulu. I did notice prices at other on-line stores have become more competitive. For example, black friday and christmas are my two big purchasing days and last year none were with amazon.

Re: Convince me to get a credit card

Use the credit card for its intended purpose which is to build credit history. If you use it as personal credit to borrow against, that's fine if you don't mind paying the high interest rate. There is a 30 day grace period to pay your bill and you have the security the credit card company provides along with an itemized bill for expense tracking. I taught myself early on to never charge more than i can afford so I view the credit card as a tool for me and I always pay the monthly due in full. I never really understood the appeal of a debit card since it allows merchants to take money out of your back account.

I have searched the bogleheads forum regarding holding onto windows XP but aside from the how to upgrade to win 7/8, it has been fruitless. I am technically sufficient so I can handle the upgrade on my own but I am stubborn to upgrade to WIn 7 because it will also require upgrading my computer hardware as well since the XP is at least 10 years old and I hate to put another PC out to pasture. I'm interested in knowing how many of you are staying with XP or are most of you making the switch on April 8? I hope I can keep XP for a few years longer and then a few years after that.

Retirement Mistakes USA Today article

This is about the USA Today article titled 7 Big Mistakes To Avoid In First Year Of Retirement.

The main mistakes were:

1. Not having a financial or life plan.
2. Overspending
3. Claiming Social Security too early.
4. Being too conservative with investments and not considering inflation.
5. Retiring too early.
6. Underestimating life expectancy.
7. Not having a health care strategy.

One important point that the article pointed out was that a mistake made in retirement is a lot harder to recover. Have any bogleheads out there made any rookie retirement mistakes, if so, what did you do to recover from it?

I think the popular lesson is to open a savings account for the kids and teach them about saving and the power of compounding interest and then teaching them about stocks and bonds at a later age. At 18, that is when you want them to manage a little money and by 25 that is the proper age for them to make their own financial decisions in life.

I just installed ios7 on it and it looks and feels like a new phone. I also prefer the smaller footprint of the 4s since I had upgraded from a flip phone last year (and I can keep my iphone in my pocket). For some unknown reason, Apple is discontinuing the 5 but keeping the 4s in their line up.

The guy needs me back in a big way after his plan to replace me fell through, and after firing me in such a crappy manner - you did read the original post, right?
Sorry OP, my mistake, I wasn't implying your requests were "sticking it to him", just what others here were calling for your to do.

Also, I don't believe you were "replaced" as you were terminated. If I understand your post correctly, the new PA that left was replacing a PA who quit two months ago.
I don't believe the clinic can handle two PA openings at the same time, which is why your boss changed his mind.

Re: Got fired earlier this week, now the boss wants me back

I'm not sure if making a list of demands and sticking it to your boss would be the way to go. Keep in mind, this guy has some clout in your circle and with your career prospects and you did work for him for three years. To answer the OP question, I would go back but on your own terms so that you do not feel resentful, assuming you like working there.

Re: How do you "rent" movies?

I do the RedBox freebie once a month. Hulu to catch up on any cable shows since we cut the cord with cable.
I would say the public library is just as good as blockbuster or any video store.

Here are the requirements for XP home, it looks like it fits with what the OP has:

Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution

Re: Home PC Upgrade Path (from Win98SE). Yes, it's time.

In my opinion your best choice right now is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit edition. It's easy to find used or refurbished machines with it installed, it supports all modern software and it'll be many years before they stop supporting it. You could switch entirely to Linux on a newer machine, but you'd have a much higher switching cost in terms of converting all of your documents and software. (mostly labor rather than dollars but still) I like Linux but I'm not sure it's the best choice for your situation. Thanks. Do these PCs come with install disks? If not and I have to rebuild from the *ground up, how do I do that? *All of my older PCs had the install disks, but my neighbor's new Win7 PC didn't come with any. I have no idea how they will...

If these are old versions of Excel, they can usually be read easily by OpenOffice's Calc or LibreOffice's Calc.
My experience with these office like products including Star Office is that they are not the same as Excel.

Re: Home PC Upgrade Path (from Win98SE). Yes, it's time.

I would not recommend solely installing Linux over Win98SE as others suggested, if you want to continue using your version of Excel and win3 records. Excel does not run on Linux and you risk losing your spreadsheets because they are incompatible with Linux. Option #1 which is what you are asking : I believe you can create a linux boot CD but you will need to create a linux partition on your hard drive to store the data. or you can dual boot configure your PC with Win98SE and Linux by creating two separate boot partitions (one for each operating system). Then you can use the Linux partition to run the current browser to do your taxes and revert back to Win98SE to run Excel. Option #2 is: Upgrade to Windows XP with your existing hardware??? A...
