I use 3% for planning but in reality my expenses don't change much. I've been tracking my expenses for over 20 years. My spending in 2023 was nearly the same as 2003.But when I retire inflation may impact me more as I will be traveling much more and eating out a lot.

Everyone is different and has different goals. My spreadsheet forecasts about $650K in investments at that time with very little being drawn out each year. My SS combined with my wife's half of my SS more than covers base expenses living overseas. We have no kids and no desire to die with money. Home equity has no role in this for me, having a paid off home just means less expenses.TipsQuestions wrote: ↑Tue Oct 24, 2023 8:05 pm What assets do you plan to have "at the end of the simulation", and does home equity play a role in lowering your desired financial assets then?

We are definitely moving out of the US upon retirement but I am unsure about this talk about giving up citizenship. That is simply not an option for me. My wife is already a dual citizen (Taiwan and US). Is the worry that Roth IRA's will be taxed by a foreign country? We are planning on moving to Malaysia which does not have a tax treaty with the US but they do not tax foreign income under the MM2H visa. That could change in 2026 and we are watching closely.

It will not let you specify a spending level and save the rest. You can work around it by adjusting the desired legacy level, checking the amount of spending, adjusting the level again, and repeating this until one is close to the planned spending. The creators of Maxifi are so enamored of the idea of spending all you can that they advertise this as a feature. But one can make it deliver useful results.

Cigna Global. I already got a quote and that number is indexed for inflation for 6 years from now. Medical plans are cheap when you are not in the USA and subject to for-profit healthcare by corporations. I can actually get a much cheaper local plan but I have estimated Cigna Global as a high-end number. With all the traveling we intend to do we need a plan that covers us everywhere but the US.Jack FFR1846 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2023 8:37 amHow are you going to pay only $6200 for a medical plan?

I'm 54, married and have approx 1.2m saved ($430k in 401k, $250k in roth IRA's, $70k in HSA, $325k in txble inv account, and $125k in various other investments. Through income/bonus over the next year and not taking into account porfolio performance I will approach $1.5m. My question: What are others spending so much on that i'm missing? My wife and I don't travel much, maybe $2k/yr, so suspect that's some of it but the gap between us and others is very large, sometimes half of what others are suggesting. I turn 54 soon and have half that amount in investments. I plan to retire at 60 and move to Southeast Asia so my projections are going to be different than many here. If you can travel at the last minute, sometimes you can score a deal. But you have to be very flexible. When I retire I might be able to do that sort of travel. But for those of us who have to plan things in advance and reserve some PTO time at work, we plan many months ahead. Google Flights is your friend here. I use the price graph to look ahead at when prices are at the lowest. If possible, I start looking well over a year ahead to see of there's a seasonal pattern to the pricing or a particular time of year when prices usually drop. You can also see the price history to look at what the pricing has been in the recent past. Also use the price tracker feature in Google Flights to get notified of changes.

I would expect Schwab to be able to aggregate my Schwab accounts. But I just created a portfolio anyway and was able to see the performance. Not sure if this is rolled out in stages, etc. :confused It's mid-April and I'm also still waiting for this. I've noticed small changes to the page (they added a tab for Asset Allocation) but it's still only showing data per account, not for the entire portfolio as before. I really have no interest in tracking performance of individual accounts, so I hope this feature gets restored soon! Finally! I can understand this being a stressful situation; I was always concerned when rolling over funds in this manner, but there is generally no practical alternative. It wouldn't surprise me if Fidelity refused to cooperate and going forward may refuse to supply any details to anyone. After all you're not their customer any longer. I don't have any suggestions if Fidelity won't cooperate. When I left a previous job, the 401k was through Fidelity and I rolled it into a IRA with Fidelity and it was done electronically. Once it's in an IRA account, it seems easy to transfer to another broker electronically. Did Fidelity charge an account closure fee? Most brokers charge $75-125 to electronically transfer to another broker. I did not have any fee ...

As I mentioned above, you can opt out but then you would not receive your SS benefits. Think of an American citizen who worked their whole career overseas. They would not be eligible for SS, so would completely opt out of Medicare and SS. You can choose not to enroll in the gap years between you are first eligible until you start SS. After that, as SSA handles both programs' enrollment, it seems they will enroll you automatically. Part A should be no cost if you have sufficient qualifying quarters. Part B and its premiums are the issue. I don't believe opting out of Medicare can cause me to stop receiving SS. I will work my entire career in the US, then move overseas. I am still entitled to SS. I don't plan on ever moving back to the US so...

If you retire with $1 million, 100% in stocks, and the market crashes 50%, so you only have $500,000 now... AND you are pulling $40,000 a year from that $500,000 (4% withdrawals from the original $1 million), after five years you will have pulled $200,000 out, and be down to $300,000. If the market finally bounces back to it's original heights, you're only going to have $600,000 when it gets back to even. The $200,000 you spend over those 5 years is gone, and never bounces back. You technically blew through $400,000 in 5 years because you were selling stocks at 50% down. This is why one should have a good chunk in fixed-income at retirement, so you can spend that in a crash and leave your stocks alone and wait for them to recover. If you w...

Re: Freezer or top freezer fridge in garage?
We have an upright freezer and a fridge in the garage. The fridge upper section can be set to freezer or regular fridge temperature. We set it as extra fridge space and love it. We used to have a chest freezer and often would forget about stuff buried at the bottom. When it died we got the upright and it’s so much easier to organize and find everything.
