I just got the 23+.
I purchased the Poetic revolution case from Amazon. Never used the brand before. Reminds me a lot of the Unicorn beetle pro case.
Happy with it so far and it feels sturdy.

Re: Lawsuit filed for Honda oil dilution issue
I drive a 2017 Honda CRV EXL. Bought brand new and now it has about 36k miles on it.
I haven't had any engine issues thus far. The right rear radar sensor went kaput right after the 3 year mark. Warranty wouldn't cover it. I didn't bother fixing it, as the repair would be well over $1k.
But yeah, I get more frequent oil changes to hopefully prevent premature wear and tear. So far so good, but I won't be purchasing a Honda again.

Definitely won't be working until 65. Probably work full time until youngest graduates from high school.
Than I'll be a full time drummer!
Unfortunately, until then, I'm just a part-time drummer.

Re: Need advice on protecting a windfall
Thanks for the responses. To be honest, delamer's initial response was all I needed to hear. I think a checking account requiring a cosignature would be great for maintaining liquidity but also making sure there isn't frivolous spending by one party. I've also thought about a CD...though that really just adds one mildy-annoying step before you can spend all the money. To reiterate: YES, the in-laws literally called my wife and I to help them with this. I'm a Boglehead, and they know I'm responsible with money. They do have a mortgage left on their house, but this isn't enough to pay it off. Applying this money to the mortgage is still on the table though. Until they know what they want to do for sure, we just want to make sure this money ca...

Need advice on protecting a windfall
My in-laws recently inherited a modest sum of money. They are not great with money. Both are in their 70s. The mother in law has a tendency to impulse purchase and, as a result, spent the vast majority of their retirement savings over the past few years. The father in law has zero experience with managing money and would not be able to tell you the difference between a checking account and savings account. While they do have a trust, it's a revocable trust and they are both trustees of the assets. I don't think opening a new account in the trust would help. My question is this: What is the best way to protect this windfall? Are there any sort of special accounts where you need a cosignature or other form of consent before money can be withd...

Re: Tesla Solar - Experience and Worth It?
I went through this process recently and I interviewed 10 to 12 companies.
Tesla was by far the cheapest, but I was never going to use them because of the terrible customer service.
Sunrun/Costco was one of the more expensive solutions.
I interviewed various local companies, including combo solar/roofing companies. I got all sorts of rates, but most seemed reasonable and were less than $3 a watt.
I also had some quotes from energysage. They had good rates, but I did not trust the companies.
Ultimately, I chose a local combo solar / roofer. Hopefully, it goes well once it's all installed!

Frustrations with choosing a solar provider
Hi Bogleheads, Just wanted to vent a little bit :happy . Been shopping for a solar panel installation for the last week. Probably have gotten 8 quotes so far and probably will get 2 more. It's definitely been a time consuming process since each consultation takes anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. I've looked into big companies, medium sized companies, and small local companies. It's really difficult choosing the contractor. There is no clear winner. Some are good on price and materials, while others are good on customer relations and warranties. Can't seem to find that middle ground where the price is fair and the contractor is trustworthy with good warranty. When only dealing with salespeople, how are you ever supposed to know what the truth...

I'm for using the cleaning service. My service is also about $200 a month and I think it's worth it.
We have two young kids and it takes a good amount of energy to thoroughly clean the house while balancing work and family responsibilities. Personally, I would rather use that free time for recreation.
Quite frankly, just the fact that they clean the kitchen and bathrooms is good enough for me.

Low fees, essentially 900 bucks and then the costs from the title company.
No other strings that I can see. You obviously have to have a checking/savings account with them, but you only need to have like 25 bucks in there

What sort of rates are you guys seeing? I've applied to a bunch of places, and right now, Ally is my lowest rate at 3.375% including ~$1750 in lender credit. What other banks or credit unions should I look at?
Also, do any of you worry about closing on time due to mortgage delays? My closing date is 39 days from now.
Thanks!

The Kia Niro EV gets surprisingly little press. It's only available in 12 states or so, but it's a great vehicle. Base model price is $38,500 MSRP and $44,000 for the premium trim. I test drove it and thought it was a great vehicle. Still qualifies for a full tax rebate. It's not a sporty drive, but it is totally practical for a typical family. Great warranty.
That being said, I have a LR AWD Model Y on reservation. The technology and charging infrastructure of Tesla is hard to beat.

Thanks! That's very helpful.
One more question: Based on the income of $10,000, I calculated my employer FICA tax component as $765. I had $513 in other business expenses.
How much can I contribute to my profit sharing? I had contributed $1745 but my software is saying I can contribute $3465. What is the deal? I thought you could contribute 25% of net earnings at most.

HR Block, Keogh account related tax question
This is a rather specific question, so hopefully there's someone here who really loves taxes and HR Block software :D . Quick summary: I had an independent contractor side gig where I made $10,000. This is reported on a 1099. I have a Keogh account and want to make a profit-sharing contribution to this account. I can't make a regular contribution since I already maxed out a 401k at my main job. Anyways, my understanding is I can contribute 20% of my net profit (after subtracting FICA and business expenses) as a profit sharing contribution. Long story short, I contributed $1745 to my account. How do I property report this contribution on HR Block? Under the schedule C business expenses section, there's a box for "Pension and Profit shar...

I also have a 401k, 403b, and 457b.
My understanding is that you can only contribute $18500 total between the 401k and 403b.
You can add another $18500 to the 457b, that is a separate entity.
In my case, my employer also contributes 36k to the 401k, thus maxing that to 55k.
Here's a question for you all: if I have a solo 401k from 1099 income, can I make employer contributions to that?

No symptoms. Just an incidental finding along with the diluted oil.
The rear main seal keeps oil sealed inside the rear of the engine, where the crankshaft connects with the transmission.

Yes, it was an independent mechanic. They specialize in Honda and Toyota. They said some other customers were also asking them about the issue.
But today, they were just shocked at how my oil looked. I requested they document what they found. Of note, they said that almost every newer CRV they serviced also had an oil leak coming from the rear main seal area. Not sure what the significance of that is. I opened a case with Honda corporate today. The representative was pleasant enough but didn't give me any confidence that there is a fix soon to come.
The mechanic said that he's had good experiences with Honda in the past when problems arose, and he believes that they will step up and fix this problem. Not sure I share his enthusiasm...

If you are interested, below is a link to a recent Consumer Reports podcast where they talk about the CRV for about the first 7 minutes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqzZm5j1Bl8&t=550s
I just had my oil change done today, at 8800 miles. The mechanic literally wrote out the following on my report:
Oil had the consistency of water and smelled of gas. Oil registered as overfilled. There is also a leak of the rear main seal area. Recommend inspection by Honda for known oil dilution issue.
Most important takeaway: check your oil. If you have a problem, open a case with Honda corporate, and post a complaint on the various sites (carcomplaints, NHTSA, etc.).

Help with 1099 (Schedule C) taxes
Hi all, I'm a physician who has always had W2 income. This year, I'm going to have a little bit of side income as a self proprietor. I know I'm supposed to pay quarterly estimated taxes on this income, but I'm a little bit confused on how to do so and I have a couple questions. A little about me: Total taxable W2 income: >$600,000 . As such, I believe I'll be in the highest tax bracket. Income as self proprietor (so far): $27,500 1) Based on the numbers above, does anyone know if I'm allowed to take the 20% pass through deduction on the $27,500? 2) Since I maxed out social security taxes at my main job, I only have to pay Medicare taxes on the $27,500, right? And given my tax bracket, this would be 2.3%? 3) Related to above, I can deduct ha...

The theory makes sense. But if lubrication is that poor, why aren't more CRVs failing? Are Honda engines so well designed that they withstand even the harshest of conditions?
Perhaps there is some confounding factor. As monkey business said, the theoretical severity of the problem does not match the data. That's the most unsettling thing for me.
As an aside, I only noticed this problem after my first oil change. Had no problems with the first batch of oil. Did you notice anything like this? Did my mechanic just screw it up?

Re: My 2017 CRV is a victim of the dreaded oil gas-dilution issue
That's my concern, is that Honda can easily just blame someone else for overfilling, unless you get your oil changed at Honda. I hate going to the dealership, but it might be the only way to prevent them from using that argument.
Are you going to get another lab analysis of your current oil?
Also, help me understand this: if this problem is as serious as thought, how come there aren't more reports of new CRVs breaking down prematurely? I know Bogleheads forums isn't the place to check, but I'm not seeing much elsewhere either. Just a lot of paranoid individuals (including me) checking their oil every week.

This is where I got the dipstick number from. I couldn't verify firsthand, but it was still helpful to know and that matched the number the mechanic gave me.
Not trying to say that you shouldn't be concerned. I'm not happy about this either. Is Honda changing your oil free whenever you go in?

My dipstick is also reading at the junction of the orange plastic and metal. This equates to about 1/2 quart of oil overfill. Had my oil checked by a mechanic yesterday to confirm this. Interestingly, it seems that many others have a similar reading. My oil doesn't have a strong gasoline smell, but it has a mild scent. At any rate, I've read that 1/2 quart too much oil shouldn't hurt an engine. Granted, this is maybe gasoline rather than oil. I'm not planning to send my oil to lab. If this is covered by a 5yr/60k warranty, that's plenty of time to see if this is going to be a serious issue for most of us. I understand that 1500 mile trips is unnerving when you think you could have a breakdown. For me, I would be worried no matter what car I...

I'm assuming most of us with an affected CRV have 1 to 2 years left on warranty. I have 2 years left and not close to 36k miles.
Why rush to make a decision? I am annoyed as much as anyone else, but if you are assuming the problems will only manifest after the warranty is over, then drive the vehicle until you are near the end of warranty. Just a suggestion of course.
Selling the car doesn't need to be a "moral decision". Unless your car has already broken down, or you've already had to make costly repairs, I don't see why you would have to disclose anything.

So do you think using premium fuel is a big help? I'm starting to do that.
Are you planning on using 0w20 oil in the future?

My 2017 EX-L also seems okay right now.
Still curious if anyone has successfully used premium gasoline to solve the problem.

Yes, no significant problems here either. Driving in northern California with about 4700 miles over 7 months. Also will keep following thread.

Have you tried using premium gas? If so, did it improve the situation?

Re: My 2017 CRV is a victim of the dreaded oil gas-dilution issue
I had my oil checked by dealer yesterday. I had him check the dipstick front of me.
Said the oil was "perfect". I couldn't argue, looked like the oil was at the full line. When I said it smelled of gas, he offered a generic BS explanation. Told me that I just need to get used to the smell.
I suppose I'll keep watching this and see if it creeps upward again.

Going to have my oil checked tomorrow.
I've already made complaints on the various websites just to get the ball rolling.

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THAT LINK!
I was on carcomplaints earlier today and couldn't find anything about a class action. Glad to know there is one finally. Hopefully, it brings even more attention to this issue.

Re: My 2017 CRV is a victim of the dreaded oil gas-dilution issue
On repeat check, my oil is above the top line, enough to coat the topmost circle and a little more (also about 1/4 inch). It's not at the top edge of the orange bar.
Either way, I agree this is really irritating. I'm going to call up my dealer tomorrow.

Re: My 2017 CRV is a victim of the dreaded oil gas-dilution issue
I bought a CRV EX-L 2017 during labor day of last year. I live in California and it's the family car, so it's generally used for longer trips rather than shorter trips. I have a little over 4500 miles on the car. As of now, I'm not sure if my vehicle is affected (or affected to the degree of other drivers). I've checked my dipstick a few times, and the oil level appears to be at the top margin of the orange bar. The oil itself appears to have a slight gasoline scent, but I'm not experienced enough to know what it should smell like. Thankfully, no gasoline smell within the cabin. I'm still in the warranty period, but should I take any action at this stage which could help me if I need to use the lemon law? Should I contact my nearest dealer ...
