There are some brokerages such as stockpile, which allow one to buy fractional shares of public companies, for as little as $5 + .99cents commission so 500x$6 = $3000. Not very efficient due to the $500 commission though.

In the future I'd recommend always using the "chat" function to communicate with comcast/cell phone companies/etc . This enables you to have a copy of what was discussed.

Some space heaters have thermostats. Check out your local electric pricing first though. Heating with electricity can cost many times more than heating with natural gas (if available). Electricity costs about 10 times more per btu than nat gas in California.

Problem 1: Who cares about the Dow? It's not a good proxy of US stocks as a whole. I think the water makes a huge difference. Hard water crusts up the valve and flapper, sediment from old pipes can clog things, etc.
The few moving parts are easy to replace so a toilet should last a lifetime if desired.
