There is nothing wrong with your plan. It keeps things simple plus you are not totally wiping out your Roth.
Sure, you could get a mortgage and rent a place and put everything in storage. I always say moving a whole household of stuff in and out of storage, setting up utilities temporarily, etc. is more fun than a barrel of monkeys. While you're at it you could start a new business while living in your temporary place.
Or, just use the Roth.

Forgot to add own house in Indiana(paid off) and want a winter place at the Villages in Fl. Roth has enough to buy outright ( about 430K) and would be taking from childrens inheritance leaving them some left over( 500K or so). We are 73 with no debt Go for it! I can't think of a better way to spend your money. And you can do it without triggering tax, IRMAA, or whatever else might be lurking. Another alternative....if you have steady income that you are not spending all of, put some down on the house and make payments on the 2nd house. A mortgage in retirement is no big deal if you have steady income. Not true, that you "can never put it back". You can easily and wisely put it back over the years by doing prudent Roth conversions.DurangoWino wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2024 2:17 pm Just me but I would find a few good dividend stocks and let the dividends pay for your mortgage. I am having trouble believing this thread. Are those seriously concerned new to Vanguard or something? No, not new at all. 30 years. Are you okay with statements being wrong? With the wrong prices? Not exactly. I know to wait at least until the next business day based on a repeatedly demonstrated pattern. So I guess I'd just say I'm not surprised, but also not concerned. So you are not surprised that Vanguard issues statements that are wrong, pulls them, and later issues new statements? Do you know anyone else that does this? This is not about waiting till the next business day, Vanguard issued the statements today! The problem is this is a loss of confidence. How do I check that Vanguard has not made a mistake? Doesn’t surprise or bother ...

2) When it figues NIIT it omits long term capital losses (perhaps gains as well??) in the calculation.

With your net worth and income you can self insure. Furthermore I state that you should self insure.
LTC is mostly take (from the insured) with very little give (to the insured). Financially they are quite bad uses of capital except for persons who are prone to purchasing insurance in general. I recommend to not be one of those persons.

Thus, Lyft is my preferred choice unless Uber is considerably less (which doesn't happen often).

Re: Was moving from a no income tax state to an income tax state really that bad?
This is misleading. If a state has no income tax then of course the PERCENT of total revenue will be higher for the other forms of taxes. Extreme example: Let's say a state has no income tax, no sales tax, no gas tax. That state would probably show 75%+ of their overall revenue comes from property tax!billaster wrote: ↑Fri Dec 16, 2022 2:05 pm Sorry, Mel, but anecdotes are no substitute for data:

Florida collects about 35% from sales taxes, 38% from property taxes and 24% from other taxes. Property taxes are the single largest source of tax revenue in Florida.

But, as I suspected, our combined pensions have always been well over that 49,553 mark, as well as dividends, interest and tax free interest (line 4 of the worksheet adds in tax free interest). So even if we did zero tIRA conversions, our base income would still be over 66k which still results in paying tax on 85% of the total SS. I ran that through the worksheet and calculator which also matched up. Maybe I'll sleep better tonight with closure, knowing I have been filing OK (correctly putting down 85% of my SS on line 1040SR line 6b). I am so appreciative of your time and attention so that I can see and understand the moving parts!!! But am most surprised that many bogleheads would find themselves in a position where they had an income lo...

It is my understanding from "Stan the Annuity Man" and others in the annuity business that publish articles and videos, that one does NOT have the option to be 100% in annuities. That insurance companies, not the salespeople, have a maximum of something like 50-60%. It is not related to the amount each state guaranty covers. Maybe there is a case-by-case option? Re: Is the Wash Sale Rule really that big of a deal?
Correct me if I am wrong, but a wash sale only affects the amount of the wash, not the entire TLH transaction. For example, if you sell $50,000 for a loss, then a $500 purchase within a +/-30-day period only affects $500 of that $50,000 sale, right? It's based on the number of shares that you purchase within +/- 30 day windows. Perhaps I should have said 500 $1 shares, or 50 $10 shares. Does it make a difference? Maybe not. Let's say you sold 500 shares for $100 loss. And you rebuy 100 shares of the same fund within 30 day, only 20% (100 / 500 shares) of losses are disallowed. The $20 of disallowed loss (or wash sale) will be added to the basis of your 100 new shares on pro-rata basis. To me, the "added to basis" process means yo...

..... I am asking how folks maximized their conversions while considering their IRMAA. The penalty for being just $1 over is so grievious, I wound never use a "predicted" step-point. I would only use the numbers in effect when I make the conversion. I would do the conversion in multiple parts, with the last being in late Dec when all current year income and dividends, and steps for the next year, are known. I agree that it is wise to wait until late December to do the final conversion so you have as much monthly IRMAA data as possible. However, the steps for the next year will NOT be known in December. In fact, the steps will not be KNOWN until September of the next year. Any numbers bandied about before that time are just guesses.
