I agree.
Delta, Delta, Delta!

MSP is an easy airport for its size. Book a hotel the night before (Bloomington area) with free shuttle to the airport and a place to park your car. Consider getting a Delta credit card (American Express) in advance to get bonus miles and then purchase the flights on that same card to achieve greater medallion status if that matters to you. MSP to CDG is an easy flight, nonstop. Basic/Economy is fine if you are all sitting together. Aircraft are generally newer with good in-flight entertainment and service.

You can combine this with Machu Picchu, which can involve a fair bit of hiking at altitude, and some guides include the Amazon as well. I don’t know what these tours look like since the pandemic.
I trekked the Classic Inca trail to Machu Picchu in Fall 2021 and also saw many other sights during my two weeks in Peru (Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley), then went to Ecuador and the Galapagos in Spring 2022 for two weeks. Both are amazing.

We looked at National Geo for "ideas" but built our own trip pennies on the dollar compared to NatGeo tour pricing. "Found" our guides by contacting the owners of the VRBO/AirBNB spaces we were renting.

Re: April 2023 - Malta? or Azores? tell me more

Hello, just back from the amazing Azores, an 8 day trip early August only to the main island of Sao Miguel. It's gorgeous, amazing, and fairly inexpensive. Very kind locals. We rented an AirBNB house with pool for 7 (4 adults, 3 tweenagers), ate out once per day, and had one adventure per day. At end of day 6, we calculated that our total food/beverage/wine expenses (grocery + dining out) for all 7 of us was 900 Euros, so given the exchange rate, about $150/day for all 7 of us. The hiking and vistas were outstanding. The island is small enough to be able to drive to any coast from the middle/central. Highlights: volcanic craters (Caldeira das Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo), thermal baths (Ponta da Ferraria), sperm whale sighting (in April you...

Re: self-pay surgery?

Hello, Your situation to self-pay, even if you have insurance, seems to fall under the new No Surprises Act (effective 1/1/2022), which means that if you choose not to use your insurance plan for any medical service, you should be provided a Good Faith Estimate of the costs in advance of the surgery. This should help to reduce any surprises. The No Surprises Act flew somewhat under the radar for many health care providers and facilities. Many aren't in compliance yet, but they need to show good faith that they are working toward compliance. If you conduct an internet search on "Good Faith Estimate No Surprises Act" you can find all sorts of information about it. Helpful or not, witty or not. From Centers for Medicare & Medicai...

Re: Having “The Talk” [with an elderly parent about Inheritance]

Hi - You are to be commended for what you are offering your parent. This may be one of the biggest gifts that you can give for the next years/decades to come (I hope it's decades!). Spouse and I each had a parent who suffered a compromising illness in the 2010's and both died in 2019. The surviving spouses of our parents sought our advice years before the parents died, and we were grateful for that as we could help them navigate the change from MFJ to Single filing status for starters. That alone is challenging and a big shock. It has been our experience that once you become involved in the financial picture, you will likely be forever involved. Given the research shows that we reach our peak financial agility in our mid-50s https://www.ama...

Re: How do you document your HSA "stuff?"

Hello all, We are in our 50's, but our approach to HSA records has been the following: 1) scan every bill that we have paid out of pocket, once each year (usually around tax time as that is what reminds me to do it). Have been doing for 7 years now. 2) enter every payment into an excel spreadsheet so I have an understanding of how much we have paid out-of-pocket vs the balance of the HSA account. I use that "out of pocket" total within my Emergency Funds calculation, as I know that if SHTF (sugar* hits the fan) I can access those dollars immediately. As many others have said, we have a balance larger than the bills we have already paid, and that's to ensure that we have some good funds down the line in our 60's or 70's ++, or if s...

Great question! Recently got into making Chia Seed Pudding with vanilla unsweetened almond milk. About 1/2 cup milk and 2 T chia seeds per serving; I place in a shorter wide-mouth mason jar, shake it up and put it in the fridge. Just made 4 servings this morning in separate jars which I take out in the morning, add a few frozen blueberries and walnuts, and let it set on the counter for 30+ minutes before eating. Yum. Lots of variety on grain bowls. Make quinoa or farro or other grain in advance. Then add whatever we want. Sometimes it's more greek-style (grain + cucumbers, tomatoes, chickpeas, kalamata olives, avocado, feta); sometimes Ranch-y (grain + corn, tomatoes, peppers, sunflower kernels, ranch dressing); others more Mediterranean di...

Thank you all for your replies, stories of similar examples, and questions. As long as you think of this as a teachable moment and not expecting ROI, this is totally cool to do. Exactly - this is much more about education on the entire process than anything. Kickstarter might be a good option to crowdsource funds from family and friends. A Facebook post gets shared and then shared again and next thing you know strangers are contributing. The key to that is to post updates periodically. Perhaps a website or Facebook for the game as well to build up interest and enthusiasm in the game. Supporting Entrepreneurial Education Experiment with a Child

Background : Our pre-teen child developed a fun and educational non-video game over the past year, but it took particular traction this summer. We have conducted a few focus groups and pilot tests of the game in the past few months, and it seems to have good interest and traction. The concept is fairly simple, similar to Apples-to-Apples in that everyone playing submits an answer to a "judge" who then selects the best answer, and then the "judge" position rotates around the table for even play among players. Game would include an original set of cards, some dry-erase boards and pens for player answers, and likely a timer. We have considered the possibility of expansion packs for separate sale; the expansion packs could ...

Overall, their CFA/CFP is doing a decent job with their assets. It's not perfect, it's not what I would do as a Boglehead, but it's decent. Re: Need Super Epoxy / Glue / Adhesive for external stone to metal connection

Hi DTSC,
Thank you for your response. You raise a very interesting solution, in which the toggle/screw itself is secured to the stone, with an aluminum channel to allow for expansion and contraction. While at first blush we'd be hesitant to drill into the stone overhang (for fear that it might crack given that it is close to the edge), I wonder if gluing/epoxying the bolt to the stone overhang would hold and then still use a channel in the aluminum to allow for movement.

I'll pose to the Chief of DIY!

Thank you!

Need Super Epoxy / Glue / Adhesive for external stone to metal connection

Hi -
We are DIYers with home repairs. We have a thin metal (aluminum) channel that runs beneath the slight shadow overhang on exterior stone walls. The channel holds lighting which is both aesthetically pleasing but also for security. For the past 5-7 years, we have tried many adhesives (caulk, epoxy, glues) to secure the aluminum to stone, but all fail over time, usually after 2 season changes. Note that the weather where we live can fluctuate 100 degrees (F) within a calendar year.

If anyone has a product that you have found might work for this purpose, we'd be grateful for the recommendation and your knowledge on its application.

Many thanks,

I'd like to get a rowing boat myself but can't really justify the cost of $3-5k. There's a bunch of other things I enjoy on the water -- SUP, wind surfing, kayaking, wake boarding, wake surfing, water skiing, jet skiing, boating, swimming so don't think I'd use the rowing boat enough. But for the rowers, how much do you like it and how does it compare to other water sports that you enjoy? Late chime in on a terrific post! We row indoors (WaterRower) and out (kayak/scull on a lake); also own SUP. Nothing motorized. So costs are a lot less on the wallet and more on the body, with pleasure! :D From the standpoint of enjoyment + workout + lower cost, rowing/kayaking/SUP'ing are golden. Rowing has the greatest full-body workout with core.

Excellent advice from many including sdcarrington. A few additions to sdcarrington's post below: I was in the exact same situation late last year, so I understand the struggle to make a sound decision. Here are my thoughts: 3. Max out your Traditional IRA contribution at the beginning of the tax year or as soon as you can in a Money Market Fund which will not grow much if at all ; sometime between the next day and less than ~6 months later perform a backdoor Roth IRA conversion . By following this approach your taxes will be minimized to the gains received the day of contribution, so if you originally invest in a money market fund it should approximate 0. Now that Roth IRA can grow tax free. If you kept your current traditional IRA and trie...

not so much "differently" but "better":
We already maximize tax-advantaged accounts (401k, self-employed 401k, backdoor Roth IRAs, 529s, HSAs, etc) but hope to improve upon topics like:
• take greater advantage of the Mega Back-Door Roth (After-Tax contributions); we have done now for 2 years but poor timing on our behalf led to less than maximum allowable.
• more quality time together as a family
• probably plan 1 good family vacation (this year was all to visit other family; that is valuable, but we also recognize time together as our FOP)
• Review AA; look at benefits of taking any "early retirement" if offered; consider then conversions to Roth IRAs
• donation of appreciated stocks for charitable giving

Providing of course that you have enough after tax money to do so - does everyone who does the megabackdoor Roth front load it when the new year starts? Seems like it would be less hassle to just divert all income (outside of the match) into after-tax right away. Less transfers, won't lose out if job changes. People have reported many ways, but I'd say more said they pre-load the traditional portion, not the after-tax portion. And different plans have different rules about employer match - some people might lose match if they pre-load so they don't do that. Every plan is different so I doubt you will find much of a common pattern. Our strategy certainly doesn't speak for all on this forum, but we front-load our pre-tax 401k dollars to the ...

Re: Life lessons: Making loans to friends. Insights? Revelations?

We very very very rarely loan out money, and in all but one case if we do it's because we've made the decision that we probably will never see it again, and those are very small values, once in a blue moon, for what appears to be a decent reason, and then not again.

However, we did do a loan one time to a friend who was close to closing on a house and just needed to clear the balance sheet. We were lucky; the loan was paid back in full plus interest on the date in which it was agreed that it would be due. But, I will admit it stressed me wondering whether the loan would be repaid on time and in full. Not something I'd do again, frankly, without a whole lot of consideration.

Re: Retirement Calculators: Data input choices

First, a question for you (and others who respond): How old are you (at least approximately)? This affects the reasonability of assumptions about Social Security, and how seriously you should take projections from e.g. Firecalc. It's one thing to try to project 30 years into the future if you're nearing retirement, already have a significant part of your savings at hand, and have a good idea of the pension and/or Social Security benefits you will receive. It's another thing to try to project 30 years of living, working, raising kids and saving, and then 30 years of retirement. Sixty years is an awful long time! Good question, and I agree that present age and hopeful retirement age matter. Currently 45/47; aiming for partial/full retirement...

Not knocking the dealer (much) but you'll save money with an Independent shop and get a discount on the service. For general info and DIY help, check out http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/forum.php which is a forum site for BMWs. Scroll down to the X section and then: 1999+ X5, X6 )E53, E70, E71). Russ +1 on independent mechanic specializing in BMWs. Own a 2001 325ci with < 95,000 miles; drooled on by mechanics who want the car. ...

Re: Tax bill > anticipated; best strategies to fund?

Update:
Paying slightly more than amount that we anticipate owing to Fed+State 2014 final and 2015 estimates tomorrow, by check, by mail to buy a little bit of time. Filing an extension due to late incoming information needed to know exact values; thus i-401k can be fully funded over next 6 months.

THANK YOU for all of the advice. Great forum, sound advice, good to weigh pros/cons of multiple decisions.

Re: Tax bill > anticipated; best strategies to fund?

Is the checking account the emergency fund or did you not list the emergency fund? If not listed and could be used, I would use that first assuming you can replete it expeditiously. If not, I think I lean toward the HELOC assuming you can pay it off quickly. Also, I assume you absolutely must fund the i401k because if you don't, the tax bill will be even higher. I'm not 100% sure, but if you file an extension on your taxes, is it then possible to fund the i401k up until the date your taxes are filed? I know the tax bill is still due on April 15 even if you file an extension, but was thinking the money for the i401k might be able to be funded at a later date. Not sure what proportion of that 100% is i401k contribution vs. tax bill. Thank yo...

Re: Tax bill > anticipated; best strategies to fund?
If you need money for a very short time (for example, waiting for transactions to settle), you can draw on the HELOC; the interest cost will be trivial if you pay back the amount drawn next month. Do you have bonds in your 401(k) or Roth IRA? If you do, then you could sell the bonds in your taxable account, and move money from bonds to stock in the 401(k) and Roth IRA to keep the same overall allocation; this might save you in taxes.
Yes, I agree that the HELOC is a good option for a short-term "loan" until the dust settles on transactions. We don't have any bonds in our Traditional accounts; all bonds are in Roth accounts for tax efficiency, so there aren't any bonds to sell in taxable. Good th...

Good point. All of what is in taxable is in index funds, but there are gains. We will see if we can elegantly straddle the liquidation delays between company stock sale and taxes due if that's the way we end up proceeding.

Thank you for all of the great replies thus far.

Tax bill > anticipated; best strategies to fund?

Hi everyone, We are interested in opinions and the discussion on how best to fund a substantially large financial outflow in the next 3 days while preserving long-term goals. Background: Between fully funding a self-employed Individual-401k for 2014, paying the balance due for 2014 Fed and State Taxes, and paying estimates for 2015 Fed and State Taxes, we have a large outflow of money happening in the next 3 days. No tax penalties, just had a much better year (or worse year, depending on how you look at it!) than we anticipated. I'll present in %'s, with 100% = the full amount to fully fund the 2014 i-401k and pay 2014 taxes due and 2015 tax estimates for Q1, all due the same day. a. 80% could come from a taxable brokerage account th...

Re: SEP-IRA vs Solo 401(k)

I have my Solo 401(k) at VG and deliberated about where to host it for many of the same reasons that have been mentioned above. Although it still irks me a little that I can't access Admiral shares within the Solo-k, at the end of the day the generally low costs, option for Backdoor Roth, and one other factor not yet mentioned swayed me toward VG. The other factor not mentioned pertains to Asset Level. The Assets held in my Solo 401(k) "count" toward our overall asset value held at VG, thus making us eligible for some of their enhanced services that we may not otherwise be eligible for with our IRAs and taxable accounts along at VG. Maybe this isn't a huge value to some, but it's been nice to have this access. https://investor.van...

Re: Investment Priority when planning for Early Retirement

One might wish to research how to avoid penalties when withdrawing early from qualified plans. Some hints have already been given. Look up 72(t), SEPP, substantially equal periodic payments. Also look up the rules about withdrawing from a 401(k) after separation from your employer in years you will be at least 55. Employer plans are different, so check yours. You didn't state ages and how long you all expected to continue working. Nor did you say anything about early semi-retirement. Thank you - your responses are always appreciated (whether to our posts or to those of others). Current ages are mid-40's; probably work another 10-15 years with desire for early semi-retirement starting around 10 years from now, if not sooner if the stars ali...

Re: Investment Priority when planning for Early Retirement

This comes up a lot but in general it is very hard to end up with too much in tax deferred. In the worst case paying OI (call it 15%) and penalty (10%) is probably still a win over paying 28%+ in taxes today. Throw in things like ROTH principal withdrawals, ROTH pipelines and 72(t)s to get access to the money without the penalty, and the odds are even more stacked in favor of deferring taxes. And if you get with in a year or two of retirement and you think you need more in taxable, you can start putting savings into taxable then. There isn't a big need to make a choice now. 6 is definitely a low priority than the MegaRoth unless you are getting some huge state tax break. Randomguy, You remind us of a great point that the Roth contributions...

Investment Priority when planning for Early Retirement

Q regarding our Investment Priority when planning for early retirement and thus need funds outside of Defined Contribution Plans. Generally, we have been following this investment priority: 1. His T-401k to get match and then up to annual maximum ($18,000 for 2015) 2. Her (self-employed) T-401k up to max allowed per income (max $53,000 in 2015) 3. Joint Health Savings Account ($6,650 in 2015) 4. His Backdoor Roth IRA ($5,500 in 2015); income does not allow for deductible T-IRA contributions 5. Her Backdoor Roth IRA ($5,500 in 2015); income does not allow for deductible T-IRA contributions 6. Child ESA (Coverdell $2,000 in 2015, variable amount for 529) 7. His Mega Backdoor Roth IRA (~$20,000) 8. Taxable (whatever is left over after above) B...

Re: Most/Least Boglehead 2014 Activity?

Most: Stayed the course; maxed out tax-advantaged accounts for 2014; set up to do the same for 2015; Lived Below Means; DIY home repairs and upkeep; monthly review with spouse on AA and 1pg (double-sided) "snapshot" of overall financial picture.

Least: Upcoming trip with 80+ yo parents, likely their last time out of the USA for many reasons; not a luxurious trip by many standards, but splurges on our behalf to make it comfortable and seamless. Worth every penny.

And as the master card commercial would imply: ROI on the "least 2014 Boglehead activity?": priceless

+1 It's outstanding.

However, with the kids, consider the Dreams in Puerto/Nuevo Vallarta. Several kid and adult-friendly pools, craft and entertainment activities, multiple restaurants, watercraft activities, etc. It's not Marival, but it's a good resort. We rented a non-all-inclusive flat through VRBO.com and then "bought" the all-inclusive meals/drinks on the days we wanted that. We felt that this worked flexibly well for our group (4 adults, 3 kids in a 4BR condo).

Enjoy your vacation...!

Re: maximize investment priority - 401k, ira, hsa, lpfsa

The new prioritization would look like this: 1. Max out Roth 401k fully (per fed limits) + company match 2. Max out Backdoor Roth IRA 3. Max out MEGA Backdoor Roth IRA (assuming plan permits appropriately) 4. Max out HSA (spaced out across the year; you control the allocation) 5. Taxable as monies permit Just so I understand this: 1. Max out Roth 401k fully (per fed limits) + company match ($17,500 + $8,750 match) 2. Max out Backdoor Roth IRA ($5,500 to traditional IRA then convert to roth ira) 3. Max out MEGA Backdoor Roth IRA (assuming plan permits appropriately) ($25,750 - yes, plan allows for this) 4. Max out HSA (spaced out across the year; you control the allocation) ($4,650) 5. Taxable as monies permit (whatever i can) if i am corre...

Re: maximize investment priority - 401k, ira, hsa, lpfsa

it sounds like the priority in my case should be: 1. Max out Roth 401k at $17,500 (+employer match) 2. Max out HSA at $4650 (+employer match) 3. Max out the after-tax 401k (and convert this later to a roth IRA) at $25,750 4. Save to taxable investment accounts whatever I can Am I understanding this correctly? RVD. This seems correct for your situation but I still don't see the (typical) Backdoor Roth IRA (that is different than the MEGA Backdoor Roth IRA). I would set that as priority #2. The HSA, as is true for ours, is spaced out across the 52 weeks of the year; as long as you elect, they will contribute, but there's not much you can do about it other than make the election and then select the right funds for your situation within the HS...
