Re: Does it make sense for parents to drop Genworth LTC policy?
Is not a LTCI policy like a life insurance policy in some respects? The policies both give coverage for the event after an agreed upon premium. Upon reaching a time that you no longer wish to insure against the loss, you can stop paying and coverage is cancelled. You get to keep the money that you were previously paying the insurance company for the coverage. Pretty simple decision. It doesn't seem equivalent to me .... life insurance is often cancelled (or term insurance not renewed) because you are no longer worried about premature death and your family requiring a salary you can no longer provide. I.e. the "need" is clearly gone. You don't know if you will "need" LTC or not until you die. You could be 85 and need fiv...

Bored? Not us. Living here at our CCRC exposes us to hundreds of other retirees with similar life experiences and activities. We are both healthier now than when we moved in 5 years ago.

I have always been able to self-insure for both of these risks. If you can pay for your dental/vision visits easily out of pocket, it seems to me that insurance is unnecessary.

Won the Game Question
We are all familiar with Dr. Bernstein's famous question: "Once you have won the game, why keep playing?"
When did you know that you had won?
I do not recall that far back exactly, but it was when I first read the question and asked myself to check all of my upcoming DB income streams (pensions, SS, etc.) and VG investment account projections and balance it with my projected expenses.
Damn! I already had won the game if my stubby pencil work was accurate. And, my calculations seem to have been pretty good (so far).

Thanks stan1. Very confusing. There are two types of accounts with similar names.
Cash Deposit is an FDIC insured alternative to Federal Money Market as a settlement fund. This is open to everyone now it seems.

This new option looks a lot like a savings account that pays about 150 bps less that the Fed MMF. Seems unnecessary.

Has anyone else received this VG survey again? As you may recall from a previous email, Vanguard is conducting a study to understand how investors are thinking about the future of the stock market, the economy and interest rates. We are inviting you again to provide us with your thoughts by completing a short survey. This survey should take less than ten minutes to complete. This survey is not a test of your knowledge. Rather, it asks only about your beliefs and expectations. Importantly, it does not ask for any personal financial information. If you responded to this survey previously, thank you! We'd really appreciate your continued participation so we can see if your beliefs are changing. If you didn't have the opportunity to respond pre...

I currently use VG Cash Reserves Federal MMF for my cash (currently has about 5.06% yield). If FED continues to up the yield, the yield on this MMF will also increase. When the FED starts to lower rates the MMF will also reduce. Looks like FED will continue to increase rates next month.

When you are young save/invest until it hurts. Invest heavily in equities for the long run. Never dip into retirement investments. Never !Do you all have savings $ amount goals, or do you set % goal? What % savings rate do you aim for
When you are finally retired, sit back with a cold one and ruminate on what a savvy investor you have been for the last X number of years. Then, open up another cold one.

6% COLA ...Medicare [Cost-of-Living Adjustment]
The federal government givith...the federal government taketh away. The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the largest cost of living adjustment in four decades — 6% — soon, because of the rise in inflation. But a report by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College found that a jump in inflation could also mean the COLA may not keep up with the rise in Medicare premiums and more taxation under the personal income tax. https://www.financial-planning.com/news/social-security-cola-may-not-keep-pace-with-costs?position=editorial_3&campaignname=FP%20Retirement%20Planning-09012021&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=V2_FP_Retirement_2021%2B%27-%27%2B09012021&bt_ee=OnptaIegk%2FncLc...
