80 percent VTI or VOO or a mix for tax loss harvesting ( very small amount in VXUS but don’t contribute anymore)
20 percent bond which is BND in 401k and VWIUX in taxable

Re: Upper Peninsula in October?
Consider flying into Green Bay or Appleton and renting a car there, maybe less expensive, you could drive into the the U.P. from the South and could start in Iron Mtn. and from there head right up through to Houghton/Hancock/Copper Harbor/Isle Royale and then come back over to Marquette and back down through Escanaba to Green Bay/Appleton. October weather can be cold especially if you're on the Lake Superior shoreline. Great mountain biking in Houghton/Hancock/Copper Harbor/Marquette as well. I backpacked across Isle Royale a couple times and its a 3-4 night hike--get dropped off on one side and hike to the other side. You can take a float plane out of Houghton to get there and it's a lot faster than the boat, easily saves you a day each way.

Re: Tax strategies for high W2 income earners
This is what I do...
Max 401k
Max HSA
Max backdoor Roth
Fill 401k with total bond fund
Fill HSA with total stock fund
Fill Roth with total stock fund
Fill taxable account with total stock fund, and the extra bond space I need I use muni fund in taxable
I put 50k into each kids 529 about 6 years back, but stopped contributing after that...
I paid off my mortgage, just don't want to pay the interest
Not much else to do but make less money...which I think I'm going to do if taxes go up even more next year (will take more time off)

Re: Have we hit bottom? Time to buy?
I'm guessing that we have not hit the bottom. VTI up because of the stimulus today. But the crisis will last several more weeks if not months. It will wear on people. Unemployment will be worse than what came out today. Wisconsin is ordered to shelter at home until April 24, Minnesota issued shelter at home until April 10....Minnesota's will likely get extended when they realize Covid 19 will worsen between now and then....other states who haven't ordered shelter at home will order them....New York, and California will be a mess, possibly Houston and other major Metros.... For every positive test there are 2-3 others they passed it on to....I think the bottom will be somewhere around the Covid -19 peak and we won't peak for a 2-3 more weeks...

I learned that it's good to have tax loss partners set up. Today I went from FTSE All World Ex US to Total International to capture a chunk of long term capital losses.
I learned that I should have an EF of 6-12 months of expense at all times.
I learned that a lot of people on this forum are uncomfortable with their AAs when stuff hits the fan.

Consider joining a pool. We joined a country club 2 miles away as "social" members, which means we just can't golf but pay way less money too. We use the pool 3-5x per week June-August for the last 4 years. They clean the pool, provide the towels, have a cabana for food/drinks, etc. The kids, wife, and I have met friends there. They took inexpensive swim lessons there. The pool is large an has 2 diving boards. We can play tennis or pickle ball at no extra cost, they can take junior golf, play in a large lawn next to the pool, etc. Cost total is about $5,000 per year. Seemed way better deal than putting in a pool to us.

Is it is short enough to snow blow? or get a plow yourself. They charge like $800 per year for driveway plowing here, unlimited. One year I would have only used it like 5 times...although this year could use it 3-4x already. I just got a snow blower and do it myself. Takes me about 30 minutes to snow blow or if its less than 2-3 inches I just shovel it. I do contemplate buying a little tractor with a plow...and sometimes a pick up I could throw a plow on in winter. Heck....if I bought a truck and charged 800 bucks per driveway per year.....could be nice side hustle...

From the Wiki
However, ETFs and the Tax-Exempt Bond Index Fund (which is the mutual fund class of an ETF) are subject to the six-month rule, because they declare dividends monthly, not daily. To see whether a fund is exempt from the six-month rule, check its prospectus for the statement, "dividends are declared daily and paid monthly"; if it says "dividends are declared monthly" (or quarterly), the six-month rule applies.

The 3 fund portfolio still kicks out a lot of dividends. I'd like to have enough from interest and dividends, using the 3 fund portfolio, to live off someday. Why? I guess it is psychological. I think I can do it or come close and still retire at age 50 if I want, as I'm lucky to be a high income earner and decent saver.

I guess I'd divide the price of the house by the square footage, this will give you price per square foot and then thats a more apples to apples comparison.
Some builders just charge more, maybe overhead, more demand, etc. helps to get references or better yet walk through a house they built and see if looks like a quality job.

I stopped contributing in 2015 since I don't know how much money to put in there. Tax loss harvesting in taxable may be the better route to fund the rest of their education down the road? who knows.

It is not necessarily part of doctor's "responsibility" to take call. Everything is negotiable. I personally take call for free but if I take more than my fair share I get paid for it. It's Father's Day and I'm on call all weekend and have 4 cases already today. I can envision a scenario where I do outpatient work only and take no call....and send any emergencies to the next schmuk over. Right now I am that schmuk!
