Not sure how your Galaxy works. I get updates automatically. To see updates/OS version installed, you should have something like Settings/System/About Phone where you can see details. Maybe check on the Cricket website too. Sorry, I am no expert either! :?

My Nexus phone gets updates straight from Google, so it is running the latest version of the OS --Marshmallow (Android 6.X). From what I understand, updates that must come from your carrier may not stay current.

Wall Street Banks’ Mutual Funds Can Lag on Returns

From the New York Times. Larry Swedroe is quoted in the article--of course, no surprises here for Bogleheads: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/13/business/dealbook/wall-street-banks-mutual-funds-can-lag-on-returns.html?em_pos=large&emc=edit_nn_20150413&nl=nytnow&nlid=55598469&_r=0 An investor, for example, who put $10,000 into Goldman’s mutual fund for medium-size companies, with the ticker GCMAX — one of the most popular Goldman funds among ordinary investors — would pay around $1,143 in fees over five years, including a $500 upfront fee. That is about 10 times what it would have cost if the money had been in a comparable fund at Vanguard, even though the Goldman fund would have led to returns that were 6 percent lower than t...

Re: I-Bonds vs EE Bonds vs TIPS vs Treasuries - 20 years

I have a small portion of my bond portfolio in I-Bonds. Not at all pleased with the return, I plan on selling at the 1 yr. mark and moving the money over to VWALX ( Vangaurd High Yield Tax -Exempt) I have been very pleased with all of my other bond funds. The returns on I-Bonds remind me of having money tied up in "high yield savings". I am starting to feel as if owning bonds is conservative enough ( I have a 60/40 portfolio) without owning super conservative bonds. Just my opinion, everybody has one! :D I agree, and recently did much the same--liquidating my I-bonds (only about $35k) and re-investing the proceeds into my 2 VG bond funds. My AA is 40/60 stocks/bonds. This also simplified my portfolio--one less account to deal wit...

Insurance Discount for Taking Smart Driver Course

I took the AARP Smart Driver "refresher" course for seniors and got a $30 annual discount off my auto insurance for 3 years. I didn't ask, but possibly could retake the course after 3 years and get a new discount. I took the course online--cost was about $12 (on sale price), regular price about $15-20 depending if you are AARP member or not. The same class is also offered in real life at various physical locations. AAA has a similar course which also may net a discount. It is an 8-hour class and I found some parts pretty boring, repetitive and not all that helpful-- but YMMV (your mileage may vary). A lot of it focused on when and how an elderly driver should give up the keys. There was also a fair bit about new auto technology an...

A poster up thread mentioned going through an independent agent and that is what I did. You just give them your info and tell them what coverage you want, then they will shop their selection of companies all at once for you. Of course no agent deals with every insurance company out there, but I found it satisfactory enough.

When I switched from Liberty Mutual a few years ago AARP was by far my best offer. Liberty Mutual was overpriced and the rate seemed to increase by an unreasonable amount yearly.

Prescriptions. I am not a Costco member (and don't want to be, although I did belong for awhile in the distant past) but one can fill prescriptions there as a nonmember--at least in my state you can. I was pricing a generic med and came up with quotes of $300, 256, 239 and a low of 152 (Walmart). But at Costco the exact same med, same quantity and dose, is $20. Even better, I signed up for the online pharmacy service with mail delivery, so can avoid the whole warehouse experience, which I do not particularly enjoy.

I may reconsider membership when I am ready to buy some eyeglasses--not sure, but I believe one can get the eye exam at Costco as a nonmember, but must belong if you want to purchase eyeglasses, etc---?

Not a fan of facial hair, but if you must, keep it very tidy. I have long naturally curly hair that I brush daily with Mason-Pearson natural boar bristle hair brushes. These are pricey but so worth it, and are the keystone of my hair care. Minimal shampooing needed, but I use an assortment of Phyto brand. Handle hair gently at all times, try not to tangle when washing, and keep product to a minimum.

I also stopped coloring my hair and at 65 yo it is in the best and longest condition of my life and looks great if I do say so. Scissors never touch it---split ends are a thing of the past. Good luck Stretch---beautiful hair is worth a little effort!

Could you not upgrade the tires? There's being frugal, and there's being cheap. Cheap is where you damage the use or enjoyment of something by going for the lowest cost. In the case of snow there is *safety*. The are only 4 small bits of rubber between you and death or severe injury. Of conversely between you and the death of an innocent pedestrian or child. There is a person who (not due to tires) carries the death of one of my loved ones on her conscience, forever. Therefore I want 4 bits of rubber that are of good quality, and not overly worn. I am not suggesting Pirellis, but you can buy good quality set of winter tires for what $400? The importance of a quality set of tires cannot be overstated. I upgraded my lightly used stock tires ...

Here is a blog which purports to offer "local real estate news, statistics, and commentary without the sales spin". Haven't spent a lot of time on it but seems ok: http://seattlebubble.com/blog/

From my limited observations I do think the current pace will keep up and more often than not (I do not pay a lot of attention to the RE market) it seems to me that multiple offers and quick sales are much more the rule than otherwise in Seattle. And has been that way for quite some time, other than for the relatively short-lived "crash" a few years back. Most notably, very often the winning bid will be for *over* asking price. I am far from knowledgeable however, just a layperson's view.

I buy my vegetables at a local stand straight from the farm and by these methods have been able to minimize my use of a conventional grocery store, at least during the growing season, and even living in an urban environment. Eating "off the grid", as it were. :happy

Re: [Sad news - Pat Larimore]

Dear Taylor Larimore,

Thank you for sharing such personal and sorrowful news with us. The video is a loving tribute to a cherished lady whose inner beauty matches the outer. How you all must miss her.

You have influenced my life greatly through your work with the Bogleheads. I will never forget Taylor and Pat Larimore, and "The Majesty of Simplicity".

Sincerest condolences and regrets,
Sheila
