Must admit...the almost daily drops are starting to make me cringe just a tad. 5 down weeks in a row and counting. The velocity of the drop isn't nearly March 2020 levels, but this has been unpleasant to watch playout. For some reason, I am having a more difficult time this drawdown than I did in 2020. And I squealed during the GFC and sold for a nice loss. Have not repeated that since nor will I. The close today was somewhat positive. The downward channel has to break first if you want any type of relief rally. The upper channel sits around, surprise surprise, 4300, which i stated long ago was the fight between the bears and bulls....that's the magic number. Fast downward sell offs are preferred if you're a bull because recovery is...

Re: "You don't lose money until you sell"
I don't agree with the statement. You lose money when your portfolio drops. Of course you do --- it is worth LESS money. The IRS doesn’t recognize your “loss” until you sell. I can't resist wondering.... The market crashes 50%, as does my total market index fund. I sell my total market fund, thereby taking a loss per IRS, and buy a S&P 500 mutual fund (same $$ amount as I had in the total market index fund, after the crash). The amount of money I have is the same as if I had not exchanged the total market fund for the S&P 500 fund* (or think other exchanges where the fund composition and expected return is quite similar between the funds I exchange from and to). By the "it's not a loss until I sell" mindset I have really ...

INDU and Nasdaq already crossed and the 200dma is rolling over. So it was inevitable it was going to cross on SPX. The name deathcross makes good media drama, but besides that, there are other conditions that warrant downturns... credit spreads are widening, HYG/JNK is rolling over, bank stocks making new 52 week lows, DXY is up 10% which is a major headwinds for S&P alone, etc etc. SPX, Nasdaq has well defined downward channels, couple that will lower highs and lower lows along with a large H&S pattern on SPX from last Sept and of course broken trendlines. I use 30 and150 week MA's.
All this point to that....it doesn't look good.

The fed put is over. Inflation is one thing, but expectations are also increasing. That's a totally different story.
You buy them at key ranges, such as when the right shoulder was forming, which was around 4500. The longer spx stays under the 200dma the more relevant and stronger the bear takes hold. Bear market rallys, shorts cover quick to lock on gains, that's why the rips are insane.

Re: U.S. stocks in free fall
No, the reason for the downturn on the equity market started last September. The Nasdaq peaked. The Nasdaq lead during the melt-up, therefore it was going to lead on the way down. This all started because the early money knew the fed was beginning their tightening campaign.Jim180 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 10:46 pm I view this as a typical mid-term election year correction. They always seem to happen. If the excuse were not inflation or Ukraine the market would have some other reason for a correction. Usually when markets fall quickly they come back quickly as in 2020. It's the long, slow 1-2 year declines that take a while to recover.

Re: U.S. stocks in free fall
There's a lot to see here, 4300 was the turf between the bulls and bears, i mentioned that a while ago. Since September, spx crossed 4300 thirteen times, seventeen of you include 20 points plus minus.
This seems to conclude the huge head and shoulders for spx, a reversal pattern, that started to develop last September.
In my opinion, the odds are a lot higher now for declining prices for SPY.

One way to do that is to look at the bull/bear 52 week moving average. According to investors intelligence, it's not even close to 1, where it was in 2009, actually it was about 0.9.Yesterdaysnews wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 5:01 pm There is a lot of negative sentiment right now, I expect every rally to get sold off. When we hit peak negativity maybe it’ll finally bottom.

Re: U.S. stocks in free fall
the buy the dip mentality was in full force because that's what everyone did in the 90's, under the Greenspan fed. Many of them wanted to juice up their returns even more so they bought into the nasdaq's ascent, only to get wiped out and swear off stocks.stocknoob4111 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 4:29 pm in 2000, we had 36 months of declines so we may just be getting started here. I wonder what the sentiment was in early 2001... buy the dip??
