Lower costs at another provider can more than make up for the surrender fee if held for a long enough period of time. It's irrelevant if the surrender fee eats into the original investment or not. You already have affordable insurance, so why would you even consider buying a more expensive insurance product that really doesn't get you any higher payout at death than what you already have? Unless you qualify for one of the exceptions, you have to pay taxes on I bond interest. So they are not a great inflation hedge unless you have one of the older ones with a significant fixed rate. But then again, you have to pay taxes every year on CD interest and they're not even guaranteed to kee...

As was mentioned, the Life Strategy Income Fund is 20/80 while the TR Income fund is now 30/70. So conservative investors do have a choice of a nicely-diversified portfolio in a single fund that rebalances automatically and that matches their desired allocation.

You can hold a single Vanguard fund that would give you a nicely-diversified, low-cost portfolio that automatically rebalances for you. I've used Magic Jack for years and am very happy with it. Was able to port my home phone # and use all of my existing phones. Low cost annual fee and you can get it even lower by paying for 5 years. Set it and forget it.
