You're probably not comparing apples to apples. When doing so, over time, high-cost active funds lose to low-cost index funds the overwhelming majority of time. You can take that to the bank.

My Vanguard brokerage statements are "Year to Date". Not sure why others seem to be having problems getting their statements that way. Call Vanguard and tell them your preference. Mel - Your "year to date statement" at year end (i.e. December statement) will show the transactions for all 12 months?...

You could put the money in a 529 Plan and any earnings would be tax-free if used for qualifying educational expenses. However with a short time horizon, the interest earned on a safe investment will probably be very small, so it may not be worth the effort.
