Remember, if you want to buy a "pension", you can always buy a Single Premium Immediate Annuity (SPIA) later in life with the proceeds of some of your low-cost mutual fund investments.

If you're using the income from bonds for living expenses, then it's OK to have them in your taxable account. Remember, though, that when you hit 70 1/2, you'll be forced to take RMDs, so plan for how that, along with the bond income, will impact your tax bracket and income needs, too.

Losing 50% of "a lot of money" (let's say $10 million) is a lot of money ($5 million). I'd bet it would be way too much pain for most folks to stand before bailing out and locking in the loss.

I once took a bunch of hang gliding lessons and found the whole process quite difficult. One needs to make it your #1 and only passion otherwise you will be dead...
