Re: Ken Burns Country Music DVDs: Historic and Artistic Merit

Trivia: Did you know that Dolly Parton wrote Jolene and I Will Always Love You on the same day? I did know this. Dolly is often unfairly categorized based on her appearance (ala her joke "it takes a lot of money to look this cheap"), but she is a brilliant songwriter and artist, not to mention an i...

Re: Ken Burns Country Music DVDs: Historic and Artistic Merit

I am a huge country music fan, my DH is not, and we both enjoyed the series. I had seen so many of the performers in concert over the years, and it brought back a lot of fun memories. It would be a great gift!

Re: 1950's blonde mahogany furniture

We inherited a Heywood Wakefield bedroom set, which I was going to put in a garage sale, until I googled it. Most of it is now in my guest bedroom. It would not be my first choice, but it is better made than anything I would be willing to purchase. I am noticing more mid century furniture in shops i...

We recently purchased a new dishwasher at Lowe’s. They price matched Best Buy. Their installer was on time and did an excellent job. My daughter used Home Depot a few months ago and she was very happy with their installation.

Most of my IRA is in T. Rowe Price Capital Appreciation. I have been happy with the fund’s performance during both the ups and downs of the market. I agree with a prior post about T. Rowe’s customer service. I have done several IRA transfers and have used the same contact at T. Rowe each time. The l...

Hamburger Joe’s in N. Myrtle: great burgers, fries, and wings. Almost next door is Joe’s Bar and Grill - same owner, but an upscale menu.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?

We saw Green Book over the holidays and enjoyed it immensely. I thought the acting was superb. We also saw Bohemian Rhapsody and thought it was fabulous. My husband said its the best musical movie he's ever seen. The actor playing Freddie Mercury was phenomenal, but we thought everybody in the movie...

Re: First time Segway tour question

I agree with taking the longer tour. We did a Segway tour for the first time in San Francisco. I was the worst in our whole group at learning to ride; we trained in a large room and I ran into the wall every single time I tried to stop! I was honestly worried that I wouldn't be able to ride on the s...

Re: Annuitizing a deferred / variable annuity?

My husband and I are trying to decide what to do in a few months with our own annuity. The guaranteed fixed rate ends in December, and I think we will do well to get 3 - 3.5 percent at that point. The entire amount is going to be taxable when we take it, but we are seriously considering doing lump s...

Re: Learning Swimming @ 40+

I had a frightening experience as a young child, which resulted in a great fear of being in water over my head. In my mid twenties, I took an adult swimming class at the Y. There were people much older than I, and that made me feel more comfortable than I thought I would. In that first class, learni...

I have been looking for an opportunity to replace my 4s, which won't hold a charge and doesn't have enough memory to upgrade. I planned to buy an SE or 6/6s, whichever was cheaper. While in Walmart yesterday, I decided to check their prices, because I recently found out they run unadvertised special...

Bailey's beads are less visually impressive, but very cool if you know you are seeing light filtering through t...

I'll second the recommendation for Johnston Canyon. It's always one of my favorites on a visit to Banff. Plan to do the walk to the lower falls and, if you're up to it, to the upper falls as well. As a kid we stayed at the Johnston Canyon Bungalo Camp (now it's called Johnston Canyon Resort). Certa...

We have a 2007 Odyssey which we bought new. We waffled back and forth between the Odyssey and an Enclave, but finally went with the minivan and we have never regretted it. Well, maybe once or twice when I'm looking for my car in a crowded parking lot which has dozens of vehicles identical to mine. W...

My daughter's debit card was stolen while she was a student, along with her credit card and drivers license. They were lifted right out of her purse which she was wearing at the time. She realized the theft within probably an hour, and called the bank immediately to notify them on both cards. The th...

Have you received your Medicare statement showing what they paid? That statement tells you the maximum you will be liable to pay. You might want to compute your taxes filing "married - separately" as well as "married - jointly". Without knowing exactly how much SS you will draw, or your wife's income, it's hard to know, but this may be one of the situations where separately could be better.
