Would look at Weathertech https://www.weathertech.com/for floor mats. I have the FloorLiner version. They are not cheap but IMHO are worth it. The fit is great-custom to your vehicle. Have them in both a Forester and a Legacy. I keep cars for a long time-at 10 years they still work great.

He has written some papers on this subject-see the "Pension Beneficiary Research" section on his web site. They are written as academic research-so they are not light reading. I have found his papers excellent.
