Video about Derivatives and Efficient Markets

[Merged into previous discussion - moderator oldcomputerguy] Veritasium does a lot of great science videos. This one is about Derivatives and Efficient Markets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5w-dEgIU1M Below is Gemini AI's summary about the video. This video explores the world of derivatives, financial instruments used to hedge against risk or to speculate on future price movements. The video highlights the work of mathematicians and physicists who have used their expertise to develop new models for pricing derivatives, and how these models have transformed the financial industry. One of the key figures discussed in the video is Louis Bachelier, a mathematician who in 1900 developed the first mathematical model for pricing options. Bach...

To echo Taylor's comment, I would strongly recommend not staying on South Beach during the 2 weekends of March 10 and 17th and most of March.
There will be a lot of road closures, heavy police presence and restricted beach access. They are trying to rein the unruliness and lawlessness from the past few years.

There are still a lot of nice places to stay in and around Miami. Brickell, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables.

Re: How to balance [foreign] windfall with an average income?

Investing in NZ by using the 'recommended' low cost index funds is not easy. Last I remember NZ has a HIGH tax for foreign domiciled funds.
Do you plan on staying in US and getting US Citizenship?
If you plan to stay in US, it makes sense to move all your money to US and invest in the simple 3 fund portfolio.

Try to find as much information as possible and plan for what your future tax situation in NZ and the US is going to be.

Don't do anything in a hurry.

Since you apparently didn't contribute to the Fidelity HSA I think you will need to remove the excess from HealthEquity. In any case the NIA is calculated based on the starting and ending balances during the period when the excess is in the account rather than the actual earnings based on what the excess is invested in. Use the same calculation as an IRA in (a): https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/26/1.408-11 You would need to include the $125 and the earnings attributed to it as "other income", but you would not need to file 5329 to pay the 6% excise tax because you are removing it before your tax deadline. Or: 5329 is for excesses that remain in the HSA past your tax deadline (April 15 usually). One option would be to leave th...

If ETFs are more efficient then Mutual Funds... Please tell us in which way do you mean they're more efficient? If you mean tax efficiency , the Vanguard index funds have multiple share classes, including Admiral like VTSAX and ETF like VTI. With such funds the tax efficiency is the same across all share classes. Up til now only Vanguard has received SEC approval of that multiple share class structure with ETFs and mutual funds classes. It seems the SEC is not so keen on the idea any longer. So Vanguard is the only company to enjoy equivalent tax efficiency like that. May be efficiency was not the right term. Structure of Mutual Funds and ETFs

If ETFs are more efficient then Mutual Funds, why don't Vanguard (and other Fund Management companies) just delegate all the trading to ETFs and make the Mutual Fund equivalent buy just the ETFs?

As an example, instead of VTSAX buying individual stocks according to the index, just buy VTI. Let VTI handle all the trading through Authorized Participants.
Wouldn't that make the Mutual Fund just as 'efficient' as an ETF?

Excess HSA Contribution - Withdrawal Process Year 2023

Hi Bogleheads, My company got re-organized into a new (different?) company half way through this year. Looks like the Employer HSA contribution part had a 'mismatch' between old and new company. Turns out we are now getting 'more' Employer contributions than planned for and there will be an over contribution this year. For the last pay check of the year, I reduced my HSA contribution. But the overall contribution for 2023 is going to be $3975. So I will be $125 over the limit. My employer does HSA contributions to HealthEquity, I just keep it in cash and periodically transfer the amount to Fidelity and invest it there. While looking at the options to resolve the excess contributions, I saw HealthEquity charges $20 to withdraw the excess con...

I'm trying to figure out a better option for them. I'm not sure how Wise works at all and the Norwegian krone is not one of the 9 currencies that you can receive at Wise like a local.

I've been using GnuCash for the past 12 years. I track all my expenses and balance it against my account statements. I also have all my investments being tracked on GnuCash. But I have a simple 3 fund portfolio. Generally I do all the data entry once a week.

I don't use reporting much. I wish there was a plugin to do SanKey reports with GnuCash data. Would be awesome.

I found that entering all the transactions manually to GnuCash was time consuming, so this made me close accounts that I did not need and which I could 'consolidate'. Simplifying things. Like Taylor says, Simplicity is the master key to financial success. :happy

And should I stick with Total Bond Market or go with some tax exempt fund?

What do Bogleheads think Spock's Asset Allocation would look like?
The reasons we need to increase Bond allocation as we get closer to retirement (from the Bogleheads wiki)

More wealth to protect
Less time to recoup severe losses
Greater Need for Income

I want to understand what Asset Allocation should be for a perfectly rational emotionless investor.

For simplicity sake, ignore his family.
Let's assume Spock is working a 9-5 job and by age 60 has accumulated assets worth 30x expenses and life expectancy is 100 years.

What would/should Spock's Asset Allocation be when
1. He starts out his employment at age 20.
2. He retires age 60.

I think at age 20 Spock should have 75/25 and at age 60 when he retires it should be 50/50.

Hi Bogleheads, My apartment lease is up for renewal. I've been at this place for 3.5 years and intend to stay here (Miami Beach). This will be my 3rd lease renewal. When renewing the lease, the building management gives tenants the choice of lease renewals and the lease value differs based on how long the next lease is signed for. We usually get an option from 7 months through 15 months. With 12 and 15 months lease rate being the lowest increase % wise. So I chose 15 months always. The previous 2 leases renewals were a 5% and a 2% increase. A new lease for my apartment is 50% over my current lease value. This time, I was given a choice of 12 months - 8% increase 14 months - 8.8% increase 15 months - 9.85% increase There were other choices, ...

When you say a business is not allowed to have 2 401Ks, do you mean even if one of them has zero assets in it? I'm not @cowdogman, but the balance in the plans are not relevant. For all practical purposes, having two one-participant 401k plans is a serious 401k compliance error When you change one-participant 401k plan providers, the correct process is to: Use the amendment section of the new provider's adoption agreement to amend the 401k plan. The fact is that it is still the same 401k plan. Open 401k account(s) at the new provider. Do a trustee -> trustee transfer. Notify the old provider to close the old account (s). I'm looking back in the TD documents and looks like they checked the box as new plan - but with an effective date of 12/...

Re: How can I rollover Vanguard Trad. Solo 401(k) to Trad. IRA?

Thank you all for the informative posts. It helped me avoid a major screw up.

I followed the process below to do a restatement of the Solo 401(k) plan at Schwab and do a Trustee to Trustee Transfer.

Re: How can I rollover Vanguard Trad. Solo 401(k) to Trad. IRA?

Looks like Recharacterizations from RothIRA to TraditionalIRA are not allowed for conversions.
I have to now decide on how much taxes I'm willing to pay vs the bonus of transferring to schwab.

SuzBanyan, terran, Thanks very much for replying. After reading your replies, I searched further and found another thread related to this. https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=293418 Can't thank you (and Bogleheads) enough. I would have been mightily screwed. My next plan of action is 1. Close the just opened Solo 401(k) at Schwab. Just opened it today, has no funds. 2. Close/terminate the existing Vanguard Solo 401(k) and rollover the funds to a Vanguard Traditional IRA. 3. Recharacterize the RothIRA contributions made this year at Vanguard to a different 2nd Vanguard Traditional IRA account. 4. Transfer assets to Schwab. Get some nice Bonus :moneybag :P 5. Wait One year and open a new Solo 401 (k) at Schwab and rollover...

Re: How can I rollover Vanguard Trad. Solo 401(k) to Trad. IRA?

Thanks very much @tadamsmar
This is exactly what I was looking to do. I searched Vanguard forms for this and received the following link, but once I click it, it takes me to an empty page.

I will call them Monday to request this document.

Code: Select all

Individual 401(k) Distribution to an Existing Vanguard Account
Use this form to move assets in-kind from your Vanguard individual 401(k) participant account to
an existing Vanguard retirement or nonretirement account. When assets are distributed in-kind, they are not liquidated.

How can I rollover Vanguard Trad. Solo 401(k) to Trad. IRA?

Hello Bogleheads, I created a Vanguard Solo 401(k) last year to do backdoor roth conversion. I did roth backdoor conversions last year and this year. Now I am planning to move to Schwab and Schwab let me know that if I can convert it to traditional IRA within Vanguard first before I move to Schwab, then I have enough assets for a good transfer bonus (their bonus offering does not apply to 401k assets, hence this request). I plan to move those back to a Solo 401k within Schwab once the transfer is complete. I also got a Vanguard fund transaction waiver. :D I have VTIAX and VBTLX funds invested in the Solo 401(k) Can I rollover/move/transfer (not sure what the right terminology is) those 2 funds to a traditional IRA? Can I do it online? Or do...

Re: 33/33/33 is the new 60/40 ?

Reading the title of the thread I thought it was a very good three fund portfolio similar to the 3 fund one recommended by Taylor and Bill Bernstein.
Then I read the article

Re: Receiving International Wire Transfers

Wise is a better option for amounts up to a certain limit, depending on the country.
Beyond that SWIFT might be the only option.

If you have a choice, I would recommend Wise.

Taylor loved Mike Perre more than Jack did. But only 20% more

Re: Receiving International Wire Transfers

I have received International Wire Transfers to my Fidelity account. You are right that it gets routed through Chase. Schwab also gets routed through another bank. The sending banks don't always have the proper forms and fields to make the right entries. I had a very frustrating experience when the sending bank sent the SWIFT transfer to fidelity, but did not enter the right values in the proper fields and the money was in limbo for a week. It was finally cancelled and sent back to the sending bank. Fidelity doesn't charge you any fees for receiving the wire. But Chase does charge receiving wire fees, if they do any follow up on the wire. I had Chase charge me $50 for the above situation once. But other instances, where the SWIFT codes were...
