Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2014!

Another 2014 retiree here, chiming in late. DH and I pulled the plug on Feb 21, 2014. The next day, we flew to New Zealand for two weeks. I'm enjoying retirement so far, but it's amazing how there's still not enough time in the day. My main goal of retirement is to try and live up to my user name. T...

Re: Retiree Poll: Do you do any volunteer work?

I fostered kittens for the Humane Society this summer for the first time. My husband and I also do occasional picking days with Village Harvest, an organization that harvests extra fruit from fruit trees in people's backyards and donates it to food banks. This is just my first year retired, however;...

Re: Bonds - Throw it all on the table!!!

1. Vanguard Total Bond Market, Vanguard GNMA, and Vanguard Limited-Term Tax Exempt 2. The first two are in IRAs, and the munis are in taxable 3. 50%, 20%, 30% 4. 33% in bonds, which is age - 20. Yikes. 5. Due to a stellar 2013, we're getting pretty close to our number, and I think it's time to move ...

Re: Thinning the Herd - what do you do with unwanted DVDs?

Amazon offers trade in on some DVDs, although not all. Just look up your DVD on Amazon by ISBN number, then check to see if there's a "Trade in" button on that page. You don't get cash- just credit on your Amazon account. But it's fast and easy. Any other DVDs I don't want tend to get dona...

Re: Cat resistant funiture

We've had both leather couches and fabric couches, and our cats will use either as scratching posts. BUT, there's a big difference in the results: the fabric couch ended up shredded, with stuffing literally hanging out of the arms, and the leather couches have rows of little claw holes that are not ...

Re: Cruise ...Uncertain

I'm a poor sailor myself, but my husband and I did a one-week Carribean cruise, and there was only one night where my stomach started to lurch: when the cruise ship was parked (anchored?) a few miles off-island because there was no room for another ship to berth. The ship gently rocked, the cruise s...

Re: Turning off Amazon One Click for digital content

I feel your pain, Saving$. I've had a Kindle Touch for a few months now, and that's my biggest- heck, my only- complaint about it. And unfortunately, the new parental controls only seem to be available for the Kindle Fire. My solution was to deregister my Kindle so that it's no longer connected to m...

Re: Buying eyeglasses online?

I used eyebuydirect last year and justeyewear last month. Both were fast and inexpensive, and I would use them again. The real difficulty is trying to pick a pair of frames that will suit you, using just pictures and measurements from a web site. Mostly I've used them to buy backup pairs.

Re: Visiting the Big Island of Hawaii

We stayed at Volcano Village Lodge in October; it was fantastic, and I recommend it highly. Can't remember whether or not it had air conditioning, though. Volcano gets chilly at night, so we ended up turning on the heater. It's worth staying near the Park in Volcano rather than Hilo if you plan to g...

70/30 equities to bonds, but we're thinking that's too high, since we may retire in a few years.
