Re: Wallet stolen at work. How to keep handbags/totes secure at work?
I work in a similar environment. I keep my car key, driver’s license, and 1 credit card on my person at all times. I wear scrub pants every day with zippered pockets to store these. In my office, I have a cheap “purse” with toiletries and items that won’t be missed too much if stolen. My real purse stays at home. Can the employer put in lockers?

What happens to capital gains when TIPS matures?
So I think I understand the basics of how a TIPS ladder works and I’ve set one up to cover basic expenditures between retirement bridging to social security age. I understand that face value of the bond varies depending on interest rate and if held to maturity, will pay the original face value + inflation adjustments. If interest rates fall in the future, redemption value of the bond increases prior to the maturity date (or the reverse as we saw this past year). My question: If I have a bond that has unrealized capital gains (ie interest rates have fallen), does the gain “disappear” when the bond matures and pays out original face value? E.g If interest rates have fallen and my $1,000 TIPS is worth $1,500 one month before maturity, do I nee...

Re: What is your #1 hobby? (I need to develop new skill/hobby.)
My #1 hobby since Covid started has been learning Spanish. I started with a basic high school level (A2 CEFR) and now have an advanced level and use it in my work and a variety of social settings (B2-C1 level). I initially started out just wanting to brush up and be able to have basic conversations. I found an excellent online tutor who lives in Venezuela and this was a game changer for me. I also joined an online language school and I plan to do a weeklong immersion program in Colombia with them this year. I've found a few language exchange partners from various Spanish-speaking countries for weekly video chats. One in particular has become a good friend and I visited with her in Spain earlier this year. This hobby has intersected with som...

Re: Forced into this awful car market
Update: Thanks for all the advice, it helped us to decide on purchasing a new 2022 Pilot yesterday. We ended up with one of the top trim levels, AWD, leather seats, all bells/whistles for 47,500 out the door (~3500 below MSRP + taxes). Although I know we could get a better deal in a couple of months, there doesn't seem to be a cost-effective way to do a short-term rental/lease. And unfortunately we had to have a car immediately. As pointed out above, it was easier to negotiate a discount on the upper trim level even though dealers were firm with prices on the base model. Also, we financed it at 1.9% for 48months as even online savings accounts are higher than that now. I have never paid more than 40k for a new car, it was really hard...

Forced into this awful car market
Unfortunately, someone recently hit and totaled our 2016 Honda Pilot, which only had 70k miles and was in excellent condition. Now we are looking to replace it with another Pilot (this car did its job btw, in a very serious accident). Our usual strategy is buy a car new, minimal bells and whistles, and drive it until the wheels come off (or someone totals it). This is a tough market for cars right now and I'm looking for advice to make the best, long-term financial decision. Option 1) Used 2017 Pilot (top trim level), 49k miles, certified pre-owned: $35,500 out the door price (there isn't a huge differential between new and used prices right now) Option 2) New 2022 base model Pilot: $43,500 OTD; dealers within 50 miles have plenty of inv...

Thanks all for the ideas! I'm definitely not used to living in higher latitudes and I think the darkness would be more bothersome than the cold. Now I'm wondering if it'd be best to spend a week in Germany, touring museums and indoor sights, and then a week in a warmer, sunnier location. Maybe the south of Spain? Germany recommendations in January?
I always enjoy reading travel recommendation threads and now I have one of my own to post. I'll be visiting a friend who was recently stationed near Frankfurt, Germany. We'll have 2 weeks of vacation and a car and bikes available. We are interested in both urban activities (museums, historical sites, restaurants/bars, etc) and outdoor activities (hiking, biking, kayaking, etc). We could also drive to other areas of Europe but don't want to spend too much time on the road. The only time that this trip is possible is in the beginning of January. What would your ideal itinerary be?

Re: Optimizing PPP Forgiveness
I am needing some clarification on what the advantages are of the 24 week vs 8 week covered period for Sole Proprietors.
Is it correct that the 2019 line 31 net/12 x 2.5 months calculation can be used for the 24 week, but not 8 week period?
Also, can the loan forgiveness application be filed before the 24 week period is done?

Re: Do I need to amend my federal tax return?
So if all the business income is combined on line 1 of schedule C there isn't really a point in amending the return, right? I just find it strange that when I print out the return, I don't see the business income broken down by 1099-MISC, 1099-K, etc. I tried amending the return on TT and added the 1099-MISC (and subtracted that amount from general non-1099 income) but the return looks identical to the original one when printed.

Do I need to amend my federal tax return?
I filed my taxes in early February and already received a refund. I recently received a late 1099-MISC with income that I already reported as General Business Income. Do I need to amend my return to show this income on a 1099-MISC rather than lumped with other income? When I print out my Schedule C, I just see gross income and I don't see it broken down as 1099-MISC, 1099-K, General Income, etc. Thanks for your help

Health insurance premiums 100% deductible for self-employed?
Both my spouse and I are self-employed and get health insurance from the ACA as we don't have access to insurance from an employer. My understanding is that our health insurance premiums are 100% deductible as an above the line deduction reducing AGI. I am not a tax expert so I want to verify this is accurate: Assuming we will be making a profit and owing federal income tax, it would be better to choose high premiums/lower deductible plans. Would premiums then reduce our taxes owed dollar for dollar? And then we can take a further tax deduction by choosing an HSA eligible plan. I'm not sure why I am seeing posts from self-employed people complaining about health insurance premiums if they are 100% deductible. Am I missing something? https:/...

If self-employed without the option of health insurance from an employer, then wouldn’t premiums be an above the line deduction? I am self-employed and choose higher premiums/lower deductibles for the huge tax deduction on premiums.

Re: [Retiring before 65: How do you deal with health insurance?]
Wow, I can't believe I never thought about this when signing up for ACA Marketplace insurance. I probably should have gone with a much higher monthly premium/lower deductible as I can take the self-employed health insurance deduction on premiums. Thank you for pointing this out!Just the premiums. It may make more sense to buy a more expensive plan (higher premiums, but deductible) than a less expensive plan (non deductible copays and deductibles). did I just write non deductible deductibles?
Dental and vision insurance is also deductible.

Different total premium tax credit in Turbo Tax vs Tax Act
Tax return was a bit more complicated this year so I ran the numbers through both Turbo Tax and Tax Act. Tax Act is showing an additional $365 refund compared to Turbo Tax and the difference seems to be that TA is calculating the total health insurance premium tax credit (we have a Marketplace plan) as being $365 higher. Any ideas on why there would be a difference? Thanks in advance.

Re: Family expecting “comps”
Great advice. I guess we have to explicitly tell all family what our policy will be. When this incident occurred, we were training a new, non-family member cashier and we don’t want her to think it’s okay to casually give discounts. We tried to explain this to our angry family member. I don’t mind giving some sort of family discount, but it is easier to give free food or drinks (our business) than it is to ask a new cashier not to charge people.michaeljc70 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2018 12:33 pm It seems not having a real policy has caused confusion. Sometimes you give them extra stuff, sometimes a discount, etc. I would just make it a straight % off that they (you can define they) get every time so there won't be any confusion and every family member gets the same discount.

Family expecting “comps”
We have a small business and serve the general public. Friends and family occasionally come as customers and our policy has been to charge them if they come up to the register, but we usually give a discount or extra freebies as a favor. Well, we had an immediate family member come to the register yesterday, and they were charged regular price (under $30) but we gave them $15 worth extra. We assumed they would want to pay because they also have a business and we always pay if we use their services (at a friend rate). This morning they sent a nasty message saying that they can’t believe we would charge immediate family members. We offered a refund and they then said the money is not the issue but it is the principle. I think that there must ...

My husband and I will be the sole employees more than 90% of the time, but we will need help occasionally. Anyone with experience buying a house at a foreclosure auction in AZ?
We are looking for a primary residence and a house in our desired neighborhood is going to be auctioned next week at the county courthouse. The opening bid will be $200,000 less than the outstanding balance on the mortgage. The house is being sold "as is" and it is listed as owner occupied. Although we can't inspect it inside, we have interior photos from when it was listed a year ago, and it looks very nice and appears to meet all our needed criteria. We have a realtor but she is unfamiliar with the auction process.
Does anyone have any knowledge about how this would work and if it's even worth pursuing?

Best way to get short term health insurance?
Hi all,
Wondering if anyone has suggestions on where to look for high quality, affordable short-term health insurance? My employer insurance will end in June and my husband is starting a new job. His insurance won't start for 90 days after that. I will need maternity care with frequent monitoring, so we will need a plan that is widely accepted with a fairly low deductible.
Looking at the ACA plans, it looks like the the cheapest, $1000 deductible family plan is ~$700 per month. Cobra for me alone is $670 and $1500/month for the family. Any other options that would be more afforadable?

I am 26 and really started getting into investing around March '09 when the DOW was near its bottom. Basically just dumped all the money I had saved up and put nearly all of my paychecks into investments since I viewed the market crash as a good opportunity. Worked out nicely for me. Was surprised to hear people I know that had a lot of cash but were scared to put money into the market. Missed a wonderful opportunity IMO and I nearly tripled my portfolio in the past 3-4 years. I think portfolio value makes a huge difference in this discussion. I have to remind myself of this because sometimes I am tempted to look back at 08/09 and feel like I am very risk-tolerant. Re: Portfolio help needed- increasing tax advantaged space
Let's just check a couple of things. To be in the 15% tax bracket, your taxable income has to be less than $70,700. Does that look about right? Or could you have given us your effective tax rate? "Low 7 figures" means in the neighborhood of $1 million or $2 million. Does that seem about right? Some people mistake $700,001 for "low 7 figures". I'm not trying to be nosy, but these are mistakes that people commonly make. That's correct. - If I use specific ID to sell from taxable, should I sell lots with the greatest LT gains? (Would the capital gains tax be 0 regardless?) - We are in the 15% bracket even without tax-deductible 403b contributions. Do you still recommend adding to a traditional 403b? Is this for tax diversi...

I second the recommendation for a 'wait and see approach' and I recommend looking for things that they will outgrow quickly (swings, bouncers, etc) on craigslist or the like. Beyond the basics (clothes, food, diapers), what you will end up needing will really depend on your particular child. We were lucky and received a lot of barely used hand me downs from friends. Some of the things we really thought we would use were barely touched. Our son had no interest in the bouncer, we realized our house was small enough we didn't need a monitor, we never had much need for the pack n play, etc.
Congratulations!!

The bag of peeled cloves freezes better than the jar for some reason. The texture does change slightly, but I find no noticeable change in the flavor. Re: What to buy/Not buy at Sams/Costco
The large package of fresh garlic is actually one of our favorite Costco buys. It freezes well and we just thaw out a few cloves at a time.texasdiver wrote: Some items at Costco just come in too large of quantities for me to use. Garlic, for example comes in giant packages. I can't get through 1/4 of it before it goes stale. So I buy garlic at the local grocery.
