Re: Dedicated Financial Computer Master Thread
I use my home office PC for everything. Email, surfing, Facebook, financial sites, letter writing, etc. The fact that the same PC that I surf the web with also is used to access my all finances does trouble me. I've also got a couple of Chromebooks scattered around that I use primarily for surfing the web; both at home and on vacation. I've been considering adding another basic Chromebook, dedicated for financial use only for all the reasons stated. Since I only access financial sites while in my office, (never on my phone, and never while traveling) adding one more Chromebook would only cost around $150ish and using it only for financial transactions would not inconvenience me in the least. In the meantime, I've just ordered a couple of Yu...

I'll admit to not reading the entire thread but I will give a couple of examples. My inlaws faithfully paid into LTC insurance for many, many years. In there 80's, they both passed away with 12 months of each other. My mother in law used exactly 1 month of LTC before unexpectingly passing away. My father in law only used 7 months before he passed away.

Re: What inferior good do you love?
Cheap mexican restaurants vs expensive white tablecloth ones. I won't call mexican food inferior but maybe just more satisfying. Some days I just crave some chips and salsa followed by a tasty south of the border dish.
Last night was Valentines night so I took my wife of 33 plus years to a famous high end steak house. I had made reservations months in advance and we were really looking forward to the experience. We dropped over $250 (no expensive wine) and the meal was just barely ok. We split a steak and it was good, but nothing I couldn't have made just as good at home. The sides dishes had great presentation but lacked in taste. Definitely not worth the $$$.

For just a few I would ask a friend to use their scanner or just use scancafe.com. If you want a lot of control then buy a scanner. I like Epson but I hear Canon makes them too. If you have a LOT of pictures to scan then I would use a service like legacy box.

Passport renewal time is now much faster
Passport renewal times have gotten much better. The past two years the process of renewing has been extremely slow. Sometimes taking many months, even when expedited. The State Dept. put out a news brief saying that they have streamlined the process and it should be much shorter. I was due to have mine renewed and with upcoming trips scheduled, my wife was stressing about it due to all the bad news about how long it takes. Truthfully…..not that long now. I snail mailed my application on December 29th, paying for expedited service and express mail return. It arrived on January the 11th, making it back in only two weeks.

Re: Cabinets.com for Kitchen Cabinets
I've not dealt with Cabinets.com but I have dealt with another online cabinet supplier and it worked out just fine. Most of these online cabinet suppliers will have you work with one of their designers for free and help you make the correct measurements. I found that the cabinets were better than the ones I could buy from the big box stores and they were consideralbly less expensive too. At my suggestion, the local Habitat for Humanity quit sourcing their cabinets from the local big box and shifted to online RTA suppliers. Better quality and less $$.

Re: When Did You Feel Financially Secure and Comfortable?
I started a response to this then realized it was turning into a missive. So in short I broke the question into two parts, secure and comfortable.
I've never really been uncomfortable. We both came from very modest backgrounds, were naturally frugal, worked hard and retired eight years ago while still in our 50's with a single modest pension and just over 1 million in investments. Either one would be enough to meet our core basic needs, so with them both, I knew we would be OK. Just as long as we didn't experience lifestyle creep. Here we are 8 years later and we are spending almost twice as much, yet the portfolio is still growing.
So when did I reach secure? Honestly, about two weeks ago when our investable assets crossed 2 million.

Here is an article by a winemaker in California that I bookmarked some time ago. Although somewhat dated, it breaks down how low the true cost of producing and bottling a premium (read expensive) bottle wine really is and how much we are all overpaying.

Re: Winning the game and Dry Powder
I'm agnostic about the term "dry powder" so you can call it whatever you want. Like TheTimeLord, my faith in buying BND has been shaken. I'm not selling any BND I currently have, but I'm not buying anymore either. We recently received around $200K as an inheritance. With a well funded retirement account and a decent pension giving us more than we spend, I am more than happy to let this collect 5% interest for a few months before deciding what to do with it. Call it dry powder. Call it a cushion. Call it an underperforming investment, I don't care. It definitely helps me SWAN.

We have been drinking wine for decades. Over the years we have experienced many cheap and many expensive wines. I can almost always tell a very cheap wine (Winking Owl, Yellow Tail, etc) from something better, say in the $20-$75 range. I can sometimes taste the difference between a $20 bottle of wine and a $70 bottle. What I can't do is taste a $50 difference. Happy to say that there are plenty of wines that both fit our palate and our budget in the $15 to $20 range.

As of today I (we) are a hair's breath away from (to us) reaching a major financial milestone. It will only take a very small move in the market to cross over but it has taken us many decades to get the ball inches from the finish line. I know it's all in mental gymnastics but that is our goal. Once over it will feel like we have reached a milestone and we can take a relaxing breathe and spend a lot more freely without worry. I know we are so close it really doesn't matter but we want to cross that finish line and pop a bottle of champagne to celebrate.

There was an article in the most recent AARP magazine that pointed out the disadvantages of the Advantage plan. Having your doctor to be "in network" was a big one, plus the "free" dental and vision have serious restrictions. If you want to see a specialist, you have a good chance that they are out of network so you could have to play the entire amount out of pocket.

We recently went through the same thing. My wife's father passed away and left his IRA to both her and her brother, 50% each. What she and her brother did was set up individual inherited IRAs at Schwab. We then instructed her deceased fathers financial advisor to liquidate every investment to cash and transfer 50% to each of there new inherited IRA accounts. It took a week or two but it went smoothly. Be aware that inherited IRAs are subject to required yearly distributions and must be depleted within 10 years. There are special exceptions but they are rare.

It really depends on where you are at and what the risks are. Mosquitos LOVE me. I caught Dengue fever while vacationing on Roatan the one time I was outside without repellent on. Single bite too. I don't like to put chemicals on my skin, so back here is the states I generally will just spray my clothing with some version of DEET or preferably Picaridin. On my face and arms I'll use a all natural citrus/pepperming spray that works well.

I just rewatched "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" staring Steve Martin and Carl Reiner and a host of others. It's a spoof on the film noir Sam Spade detective movies. Shot entirely in black & white it seams into the script old movie clips starring many famous actors. Humphrey Bogart, Veronica Lake, Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, Lauren Bacall and many more. Like I said, it's a spoof but done well. I enjoyed it.

I'll throw another data point in. I keep 9-12 months of cash on hand in a money market, plus another two years in I-bonds. I have set up monthly auto withdrawals from the money market account and replenish it every 6 months or so. The I-bonds are held in reserve to give me two more years of SWAN during an extended market downturn. With other investments, all together our asset allocation floats around 60:40.

Anything is better than that horrible hotel room coffee & maker. Now if we are away for a few days and traveling by car we bring out own coffee maker. If we are flying and there is a Walmart near our destination we'll buy ground coffee, creamer and a cheap $10-$15 coffee maker and just leave it at the end of the trip.

First of all, thank you all for your spirited and thoughtful replies. I want to make it clear that I am not trying to change anyone’s mind about their personal position on index bond funds. Get getting some clarity. As many of these discussions go, it sometimes wandered off the track and incorrect assumptions can be made. But still, a lot of great feedback in total. It was interesting to see that many expressed “stay the course” but admitted that some to most of their fixed investments were in also in CD’s, stable value funds, MYGA’s or TIPS. Another thing of interest to me is the idea of holding BND a few years until it cycles through the lower paying bonds to avoid losses. For individual bonds, (not funds) I agree. But if you hold shares ...

Why am I still in the bond index?
I’m retired, in my 60’s and have close to the classic 60:40 portfolio in my IRA, with the majority of my bond holdings in Vanguards total market bond index fund. I understood that stocks were for risk and bonds were for safety, so I, like many here, was taken by surprise how far it fell during the last major downturn. I’ve been through a few of these, so I didn’t panic and just waited it out. Now the stock market has rebounded nicely, but total bond funds are still a victim of rising interest rates with the prospect of a slow recovery. Lately I'm been pondering over “Stay the Course” vs “Sunk Cost”. For decades I’ve been a proponent of ignore the noise and stay the course. But I’m also familiar with the idea of sunk cost. What’s gone is gon...

Not  though. Quite frankly "bonds are for safety" in 2022 was flat out wrong. Instead of not timing the bond market, one should absolutely have timed the bond market instead of taking a 0.5% yield. To infuriate the matter further, some posters are now saying the ship has sailed, even though they were the ones telling people not to make a move back then. I'm no financial genius, just someone who is trying to make wise financial decisions. Like many here I drink the conventional Kool-Aid that Bonds were your anchor against the a market plummeting.
