I am planning to buy treasury bills ( dated to 2020) for 50 K using Schwab brokerage, As this is not a ETF /Fund assume this falls outside of estate purview. can you please comment? Non Resident alien-Treasury bills/Bonds

Thanks to several posts in recent weeks, it is clear to me that in my current situation ( non US national and non -resident) i should reduce/avoid US situs assests over 60K for any future estate tax issues. I have 300k invested in stocks with US brokerage. As my future employment destination is uncl...

Re: Non-US citizen with US Brokers: Estate Tax risk?

Thank you so Much for your Reply S.Boy. Very useful leads indeed. However I made an error in my query . I do not have any real estate but all my assets in US shares ( Non tangible assets) worth 350 K . As these are US situs assets, assume they also may fall under the same category as real estate? If...

Re: UK Expat living in US looking for suitable broker/countr

Following the advice from in this board, i was able to open Interactive Brokers account very easily. I am a UK national living outside of UK . There is a real possibility that I will move to US and making inquiries with my current brokers confirmed that I would need to close my UK brokerage accounts...

US based brokerages and Estate Tax declaration for non-US

Based on some posts over last few weeks, it seems to be clear that non-US situs stocks can be held at IB ( US Portal) very easily with no withholding taxes ( for a non resident, Non US Citizen) It is likely that I will have to move all my UK shares currently being held with a UK brokerage as they do...

Re: Non-USA "persons": Which non-USA broker?

I am a bit confused on your dislike of IBC. Based on some eralier comments here, I thought IBC was one way to get away from draconian US Estate tax issues for non -US Persons?

By the way if any non US persons can advice links on easy way to set up IBC for dummies , pls let me know

Re: Non-USA persons: We need a non-USA broker

I am based in Latin America ( Non- US and non resident) and am in final stages of opening an account in IB. However I am a bit confused. It seemed to automatically open through their US branch and in the FAQ´s it says that all dividend interests will be taxed and will be paid to US tax man . Being a...

Re: Estate Tax- Non resident- Advice Requested

It looks like ADR´s of foreign companies even when issued in US exchanges are also considered as non-situs assests along with trasury bills and off shore Mutual funds.. I think this provides a lifeline for me as I can divert some of my assets above the 60K threshold to diversify into other countries...

Re: Estate Tax- Non resident- Advice Requested

I called up Schwab and they do not provide anything on Irish domiciled ETF´s. As This is the only brokerage I have in US , I guess my only alternative is to keep cash in Bank accounts ( which I hope is absolutely not counted for estate tax beyond any doubt) for a few years till I move back to US and...

Re: Estate Tax- Non resident- Advice Requested

Thanks Indeed. With respect to Irish Domiciled ETF´s being outside the purview of estate tax, I have seen in some blogs that these fall under mixed situs and not purely non-US situs assets. Hopefully this will not cause any future issues with respect to dealing with IRS etc? Any further guidance and...

Re: Estate Tax- Non resident- Advice Requested

Thanks for all the advice. Can I get one further clarification as i am very ´green´on these matters. If I stick to treasuries and Ireland Dominated ETF´s as suggetsed above , does that mean that I can invest amounts without any worries on estate planning and 60K limit etc? My original aim was to inv...

Can we also discuss aspects related to (1) Non-US people living overseas (i.e. Non-Resident Aliens) who are invested in stocks domiciled in the US (e.g. Vanguard ETFs) as the discussion seems to be drifting to merits and de-merits of citizenship. I am a non -us citizen who had lived for several year...
