Re: What do you do to keep your mind sharp?
This is a great topic. I'm 62 and beginning to notice occasional 'senior moments' when I can't remember a name, etc. My mother has Alzheimer's, so it's a real concern for me. I'm about to retire from my job, and I hope that playing music will help me stay sharp. Will definitely follow some of the suggestions here. Thanks!

Most musicians I know have a dream of being an employed musician
Let us know your release date and good luck in your new ventures
And by 'unemployed musician' I meant that I plan to live on my Boglehead savings and play music (guitar and ukulele) as a hobby.

Re: Keep two cars for one person to drive
I recently bought a 2016 Honda CR-V, and kept my 2000 Civic that I've been driving for the past 17 years. Why? The Civic costs very little to own and operate, so I'm still driving it to work and keeping the miles off the new CR-V. I'm planning to retire by year-end, so I'll sell the Civic when I no longer have a harrowing daily commute.

At market close on Thursday, 6-March-2014, my retirement accounts reached the 1-million mark. I just wanted to commemorate the occasion.
I'll keep working and saving, but am planning to retire three years from now at age 62, when my house is paid off.

I don't know anything about DFA funds, but if passive investing via mutual funds, is all you want to do, then skip the advisor, open a Vanguard mutual fund account, and start buying and holding Vanguard funds. You'll save on investing costs, and begin keeping more of your money. You may also want to read some of the investing books listed in the Bogleheads wiki, such as Bogle's books on mutual funds, and The Bogleheads Guide to Investing, to get the gist of our investing approach around here. Also, when opening a Vanguard account on-line, and transferring other accounts to Vanguard, I recommend being on the phone with a Vanguard customer service rep. during the process, and let them walk you through it step by step. That's what I did, and h...

Re: How loud is impact noise?
I suffer from tinnitus and hearing loss, caused by Ménière's disease and past noise exposure. I can relate to the OP's concerns because hearing loss is permanent and tinnitus can be maddening, so I try hard to save the hearing I still have. I avoid loud noises whenever possible and always have disposable foam earplugs handy, just in case.
I read somewhere that listening to music can relieve the effects of tinnitus, so I usually go to sleep at night while listening to classical music on the radio with the volume turned down low to mask the ringing in my ears, and it seems to help.

Those Geo/Chevy Prizms that folks have mentioned are GREAT little cars. I believe GM & Toyota went in together and built the Prizms and Corollas at the same factory in California. The Prizms are surely some of the best built GM cars ever. They just keep on going, and it's amazing how many of them are still on the roads once you start to notice them.

First, toddlers don't know Android from Apple, nor do they care. Second, with four grand-kids, you're going to need four tablets, or there will be more fighting over them than sharing them. Having said that, the best "tablet" for toddlers is the LeapPad2 Explorer Learning Tablet from Leap Frog. Last Christmas, we bought two of them for the grand-daughters (ages 3 & 4), and they LOVED them. The girls hardly put them down for months, and now a year later, they still play with them. Plus, they've learned quite a lot from playing with them, without even realizing it. The LeapPad has a simple kid-friendly interface with games, videos, ebooks, art, camera, etc, and it's all about learning. It accepts downloadable apps and/or cartrid...

I recently upgraded to two "HD" TVs. First, was a 32-inch Sony Bravia. Second one is a 60-inch Sharp Aquos. Both are pulling in my local stations crystal clear with old-fashioned rabbit ears antennae. This Boglehead can't afford cable or satellite TV, so 720p on the Sony and 1080i on the Sharp looks perfectly good to me, especially for free!
