Hmmm, I started this thread and said VWO seemed cheap at $40
Funny how it doesn't seem cheap at $32 today. I haven't bought any in over a year but looked at it today.

The only things we can really use the word crash on are oil related stocks and mining stocks.
Those have definitely crashed. Still crashing actually.
When your $40 stock is $1, then you really can panic.

Reasonable to see a PA for Derm screening?
This is sort of financial related, since I have a HDHP and will be paying for the visit out of pocket. I have what I think is a small actinic keratosis (yay google!) on my face and wanted to go see a dermatologist. I checked with my first choice, UW medicine and they said the first available appointment was October! I then searched my Premera Blue Cross health plan and found a nearby dermatology clinic. They can schedule me appointment for a general screening this week, but with a PA instead of a MD. Opinions? I have some concern that a PA might not have the trained eye of a MD...but perhaps a PA at a dermatology clinic is better than a MD at a family practice (specialized and all that). Would you be willing to see a PA or would you hunt ar...

Interesting that Goldman missed the call on gold by about 20%.
Today gold is trading for $1257, quite a way from the $1050 prediction.

Alternatively, you can acquire substantial funds by realizing that you aren't going to be happy in any job, choosing something that pays well, and living cheaply. I can be miserable 10 hours a day for 25 years, or for the rest of my life. I'd pick 10 years if it was an option, but this is the best I can do. You just have to hope you don't die young so you can get some freedom on the tail end. This. Everyone always says do what you love and money will follow. Well, I think it happens in a few cases and yes we do get outliers who manage to make millions or more on some personal favorite hobby they turn into a business, but I believe the vast majority end up going back to the grind in order to make enough money to retire before 70. Some people have long commutes, maybe 2 hours total per day in traffic.
Perhaps they want to spend that 2 hours doing something else in retirement.
I would say being financially independent is enjoyable, not retirement itself. Being able to choose when you want to drive or if you want to drive at all. Quite a few people dig into their hobbies, some even manage to make money on their hobby.

If you keep your money in 401(k) accounts, can you still do the Roth conversion, i.e., convert your money from 401(k) accounts to Roth accounts? Some 401(k) plans now offer in-service conversion from traditional 401(k) to Roth 401(k). IRS permits it but plans don't have to offer the option. To the OP, see "asset protection" page in wiki for a little more info. I was talking about directly converting money from 401(k) to Roth IRA, not after rolling over to traditional IRA first. I am not talking about traditional 401(k) to Roth 401(k). If you have to roll over 401(k) to traditional IRA first, you lose the protection. That is my point. You lose the protection past $1.17M or you lose all protection? We will face a similar choice whe...

You might run a 100 yard dash in under 20 seconds at 104, but the odds are far greater you will be limited to sedentary activities like posting on here asking if you can retire on $11,000,000.

Re: ACA exchange or Cobra?
As you've outlined it then (assuming 9 months of coverage starting in the Spring): With the ACA Bronz plan you would pay no premium, due to the subsidy, and a $12,600 deductible before coverage kicks in. Retaining your employer's HDHP under Cobra you would pay 9 x $950 = $8550 plus $5000 deductible which totals $13550 before coverage starts. Does this help? Sorry, wasn't clear. With the MAGI of $40,000 estimated, we only qualify for a $350 subsidy which would bring the $700 ACA policy down to $350. Thus with the ACA policy we would pay $350 x 9 = $3150 and with the Cobra we would pay $8550. $13550 with Cobra before coverage starts and $15750 for the ACA plan before coverage starts. Cobra looks better even with the ACA subsidy if we actuall...

ACA exchange or Cobra?
We will be taking an extended/permanent leave of work in spring of 2015 in our mid 40s. (We may do some odd jobs here and there over the years for earned income). I estimate our W2 income in 2015 will be about $70,000 from various sources/unpaid vacation. After deducting $18,000 for 401K, $11,000 for deductible IRAs, $4600 for unsubsidized portion of HSA, and $3000 of carryover capital loss I estimate our MAGI for ACA will be $36600 plus some amount of dividends and interest added back in (most assets in 401K/IRA/Roth so not a lot here, maybe $4000 total). A reasonable figure might be $40,000 MAGI. Based on that, we can get a bronze plan for around $350 a month with about a $350 subsidy, $12,600 deductible. We could continue on Cobra with o...

To me gold is good for a localized currency crisis. If something happens and your local currency declines by double digit % compared to a basket of world currency it might be nice to hold a bit of gold. The question becomes will your government allow you to redeem it and will they tax you to hell and back on it.
It is a pretty rare event but it has happened to my wife's grandparents and gold (and silver) saved their life in Soviet occupied Latvia.

Yes, we can contribute I think up to 100% of our income to 401K (will double check that, but I know it is at least 90%). Income is enough that a couple of months W2 wages would exceed all the deferrals combined.
Good point about the HSA. We are allowed to lump it in, as that is what we did for 2013, 2014 since we are using it like a Roth IRA and paying medical bills out of pocket. We plan on going with a ACA silver plan for the remaining 8 months of 2015 and I think? that would qualify as a HDHP?

Maximum deferrals for working 3 months?
If a married couple both under age 50 with single earner who decided to quit/retire a few months into a new year, what is the maximum tax deferral they could get?
I come up with $17,500 for 401K, $11,000 for tIRA, and $6650 for HSA (the new limit for 2015).
So $35,150?
Thus they could earn $66,000 in W2 wages and perhaps some interest income and have a MAGI under $31,000 for 2015?

Re: Who is doing In Plan Roth conversions?
Thanks Alan. I did just confirm in the tax documents Fidelity has too:
"If your Plan allows in-plan Roth conversions, and you roll over the payments to a designated Roth account in the plan, the amount of the payment rolled over (reduced by any after-tax amounts directly rolled over) will be subject to income taxes. However the 10% additional tax on early distributions will not apply (unless you take the amount rolled over out of the designated Roth account within the 5-year period that begins on January 1 of the year of the rollover)"
The bold section is the key. Because this is after tax money and because the market has not generated any earnings, this will be a non taxable event. Really is a no brainer.

Re: Who is doing In Plan Roth conversions?
Sorry for bringing this thread back to life but I just did my first in plan conversion today and want to confirm they did it the correct way.
Had $600,000 in the 401K consisting of $586,200 of pre tax contributions and employer match plus $13,800 of after tax contributions from this year. The $13,800 is kept in the same 401K account but is tracked separately, and Fidelity informed me the current value was $13,790 (because of the poor market this year). They said there would be no tax if I did a direct in plan conversion to a Roth IRA of this after tax 401K money and had me set up a Roth account.
Does this sound correct? $13,790 will come from the after tax portion of the 401K and go directly to a Roth IRA, generating no tax bill?

You want to save about 25 to 33 times your expected living expenses, not your income.
If you make $5,000,000 a year but only need $50,000 for living expenses, you don't need to save $125,000,000 or even 50% of that.
If you need $50,000 for living expenses, a safe retirement nest egg would be around $1,650,000. That would most likely last you forever.

Re: Who is doing In Plan Roth conversions?
I have started doing it recently and just do it for after tax contributions. I contribute after tax money for each pay check and then immediately do the in plan conversion only on the after tax contributions and essentially don't pay any tax. So you are doing 12, 24,or 26 (how ever many pay periods you have) conversions per year? Very similar strategy to a backdoor roth contribution although I'd guess the percentage of people who have access to a Roth 401K, Roth 401K conversions, and after tax contributions is very small. I'd also be curious if this transaction is entirely automated or if it is unsustainable from an administrative cost perspective if a lot of people did this. I am doing what gsk is but am limiting it to about 4 times a yea...

Re: $22 million reason for umbrella?
This is a good reason to have a lot of your money in a 401k/IRA which is protected from settlements in many states.
Well, not all is protected in IRA but I think every bit of a 401K is protected from both creditors in bankruptcy and also from legal settlements. IRA is only protected to around 1.1 million (and not in all states?). Hmmm, a reason to leave the 401K intact and not roll into IRA?

Re: Sell in May and Go Away: Fact or Fiction?
Well, it is that time of year again. Did it actually work in 2013 or was it sell in may, buy back in late may and ride the bull the rest of the year 2013?
I am up 25% YTD so I can handle a little fall...stay the course.

In the situation like earlier this year when 5 year CDs were paying 3%, does it make any sense to hold "bonds" over cash?

Re: Do you think the biotech sector will be hurt long term?
There are ways to finance drug development other than the current patent system. Somehow I don't think you are going to raise 4B to 6B on kickstarter to fund your own cure for Hep C. And what would you offer contributors? A T-shirt? Government funding is likely to work better than kickstarter, especially since the government already funds a lot of research. For example, http://p2pfoundation.net/Dean_Baker_on_the_Inefficiencies_of_the_Current_Drug_Patents_Regime Government funding is great as long as you are willing to subsidize every other country in the world. If we did not have a global patent system, how would a small country contribute anything at all to the funding effort? At least now the system provides a method where everyone can s...

So yeah, Gilead just blew the lid off of earnings...I think the high estimate was $1 a share and they earned $1.48 and they almost doubled revenues YoY.
Probably will be ok.

Does anyone have the Blue Cross/Blue Options PPO plan in Florida? We will have to choose a home state for taxes and ACA while traveling around the USA and I was considering Florida and this ACA plan because of the nationwide network.

Re: Expensive med. test not covered by insurance
Hmmm, not sure here. When I go get my auto fixed, they usually provide me with a ballpark estimate of what the repairs will cost. It might not be too much to ask to have a little printout you sign before a battery of tests is sent off that gives a ballpark of what these tests cost. If the facility/insurance company would rather hide that information for some reason I do not believe this is the patient's fault. Nor is it the doctor's fault. He is only the one trying to provide services. I would not say it is the doctor's fault in the same way I would not say it is the mechanic's fault, unless the mechanic is the owner/operator of the shop. It is the fault of the manager of the clinic/hospital. The doctor is just trying to diagnose and treat...
