Re: RMD & Social Security

Not an issue re taxes; already will be at 85%. And, not an issue with WEP; our 457 is integrated with SS.

RMD & Social Security

Query: What is the effect, if any, of RMDs from a 457 deferred comp account on SS benefit calculation? Withdrawals are taxed as earned income but do the withdrawals figure into earnings for purposes of potentially increasing SS benefits by substituting for earlier, lower, earning years? I searched (...

Re: Yes, ANOTHER Social Security Question

Yeah, those thoughts were pretty much what went through my mind when I heard about this. I believe that she is receiving a teacher's retirement pension and is FRA but I will inquire. And I also believe the deceased husband's SS benefit was greater than her pension. I will check on all those points. ...

Yes, ANOTHER Social Security Question

But, at least it doesn't concern file and suspend, DRCs, early applications, etc., etc. In a nutshell, here's the situation about which I was just informed (I can provide/get additional info as necessary for analysis): Husband receiving benefits on his own record. Married for more than 10 years to t...

Now, for the update. Sigh. Well, after I went through the DRC filing at my local SS office, I went on an extended vacation. Silly me. Whilst on said vacation, Mrs. Curious Reader checked our bank accounts to determine whether Medicare had instituted our request for automatic payments for the Parts A...

So, I toddled in to my local SS office this morning and dropped off a completed and signed SSA-795, with a cover memo essentially restating what I stated in the 795. The worker bee was pleasant but had no idea what I was doing and no idea what DRC was all about. Kept responding that there were no ea...

sshonore,
Will do. Er, um, just as soon as I figure out how to do that. I didn't see any instructions on the site on how to do that. I'm a newbie, afterall.

pshonore: yep, that's the page! sscritic: right after my immediately preceding post, I did a search and came up with the Fed Regs language you referred to and also the SSA Emergency Message dated March 2, 2011, referred to as EM-10088 REV 2, which provides instructions to SSA workers regarding, amon...

pshonore, I am on that question presently. I gather from other threads here on this issue that others have experienced difficulty with this issue. It appears that suspension of benefits is particularly tricky when an individual has begun receiving benefits before FRA (as in my case) and then goes ba...

Bingo! Followed your guidance re AnyPIA, SSCritic, and it worked perfectly. And, you are correct that I burdened the SSA telephone tech with, uh, the facts, and evidently confused the tech. When I visited the local SSA office, with an appointment, and went over my situation, they (there was a primar...

Doh! Now, of course, you may discern that I am a total doofus. Yes, I'm FRA this July. I had in my (less than focused) brain my intention to delay benefits until 70. Thus the reference to 2015. Sigh. Have patience. I will now read the responses. Thanks folks.

Another SS Question for SS Critic

OK, I have lurked, and gone to the various SS question strings, gone to the SSA site, visited local SSA office, called SSA, and..... well, you guessed it. I can't figure out my PIA. Why? (and, yes, I have downloaded and tried to use AnyPIA). Well, because I started taking benefits at 62 and 1 month,...
