Re: New job or accept counter offer at old?
I would take the new job and not look back. From the description of the monetary problems of the current company and the fact they know you looked elsewhere I would not figure them to be loyal to you when things get tough. The commute won't be that big of deal and you will make new friends at the new job in no time. GO FOR IT!!!

Besides the customers they have that don't pay off the balance every month I think they count on some missing a payment and being able to charge the large fee for that. I guess it all adds up or they wouldn't be in business.

The tax break you receive for opening it. Up to the 5000/6000 dollars you put in it all comes off of your income on your tax return,., Depending of course on your circumstances. If you don't get that then I don't see a huge advantage for you.

Re: Vanguard funds prices at end of day
There are a lot of calculations that need to be done. If a stock or bond didn't trade at all today, or if trading was halted mid-day and not resumed, then its price has to be estimated. If a fund holds stocks which trade on the Japanese market, the fund has to decide how much of a fair-value adjustment to make for the difference between the closing price hours ago in Japan and the current value in the US. Thanks David, I guess with all the computing capabilities we have in this world I expected almost instant computation. I guess I never realized all the manual computations that might go into a funds NAV. This also explains why it takes a little longer for the other services to get the updates I guess too. Vanguard seems to get this info e...

Recently I have been going with Douglas tires from Walmart and they are lasting MUCH better than any of the other brands tried in the past. I think the road noise is a bit more from them but the longevity has far outweighed that. On one car I used to have to change at least a pair of tires every time inspections came around but it has been two years now and the Douglas tires are still good. I still buy the expensive tires for my toy but only because Douglas doesn't make tires for the vette.

Re: VFIRX or VFSUX
Which of the two VFIRX or VFSUX would you choose to put 50K into instead of a 5 to 7 year CD and why? Doesn't it depend on the need and timeframe for this money? If you needed your $50K around 12/8/2008, you wouldn't be very thrilled with VFSUX (the name actually made sense then :) ). In 5 months it went from $10.57 on 7/8/2008 to $9.57 ( —9% ). Yes it would depend on what the needs are for the money. I really would not need to touch it in the near term but my plans are to have that portion (50K) in a semi liquid mode. Instead of dumping it into a short term CD at low interest I have been looking at other alternatives but of course don't want to get carried away with risk on it either. Thanks for the input. Yes I guess VBIRX would be an in between position to take on it. In the current environment I wonder which of the three would take less of a hit if the interest rates were to take off. Or would you think they are about the same with respect to that. I am still interested in the original post question as well.

I would bring it up in your next 1:1 meeting (or schedule a mtg for it) to say that you feel like you are doing next level work and would like your boss' advice on what you need to do in order to earn and receive the promotion for next year. Then he can say you need to do X,Y,Z and you can go out and do X,Y and Z. I have seen that game played many times and people ending up with the middle of a doughnut. Sometimes it is just the company or the office politics that lead to promotions or not. I think if you are happy with the work then just make up your mind to keep at it and don't set too high of expectations of things to come. If you aren't happy and you want more then maybe it is time to start looking elsewhere. I just wouldn't play the g...

Interesting question indeed. I just talked to one of my banks and they told me they are not sending a 1099 int on one of my closed accounts because it did not earn 10 dollars in interest. He didn't tell me how much it DID earn and said it won't be reported anyhow. So if I didn't report this I guess it would not be noticed??? I have an IRA in Vanguard that is mostly invested in a four fund portfolio. I have some money that I was considering buying CD's with but now am looking at a bond offered by Goldman Sachs that matures on 02/15/2016 that has a 3.14% yield. This seems interesting to me but I am not bond savvy so I really want to know what the downside/risks are of getting into something like this. I know they aren't FDIC insured but just wonder what the worst case scenario might be and all of the risks involved. comments please.

I was thinking that the VXUS might have the advantage in that you can buy and see what the price is when you buy. This isn't that big of a deal I guess if it is just one purchase and the intent is to hold. I wonder if one can use the ETF to guestimate the price of the mutual fund at day's end? In other words if you look at the VXUS price and see it falling is that enough indication that VTIAX will be lower at the end of the day?
