Has anything changed with the way your employer prices benefits? If not, then I’m not sure why there would be a different decision today than there was a few years ago.

If a cross country move isn’t improving your financial situation then doing it doesn’t make much sense unless you’re itching to move for personal reasons. The Pacific Northwest is very different from the east coast so definitely be prepared for some acclimation.

1, You totally lost me at the kitchen at the front of the house next to the front door.
2. If you ultimately want to sell, 2 bedrooms upstairs is a very niche buyer
3. I am on team no cupola
4. I wonder about the scale of the little tiny window in the biggest triangle of your roof.
5. Your architectural aesthetic is all over the place. I think you’re going for a modern farmhouse vibe but it’s reading more farmhouse less modern. Maybe that’s the intent. The cupola reads different from the country-ish front doors and columns which remind me of a country market which is different than the roofline.
6. One wider front door as the focal point of the house should reveal a big wow of the view to the back once you step into the house.

Counterintuitively, as an average height woman (5’3”)I have found that a low enough desk is just as important as a good chair. Most desks are made for average male height. Even with a footrest, a too tall desk is still uncomfortable and leads one to do things like sit cross legged or one leg across the other. Anyway, chairs to check out include Branch, Haworth, Steelcase Think and Amira.

If you want to protect yourself against divorce, keep dating and get to know one another better. 2.5 years between the ages of 23 and 26 is a short blip of one’s life. Talk about finances, spending on family gifts, and how you would handle inheritances. If she is using family money to enhance her everyday standard of living, then figure out how you navigate that as a couple now. You talk about uncertainty around paying for a wedding. It should be discussed on a general level way before proposing.

IMHO, Kids are a 2 yes, 1 no decision. Spend some money on couples counseling. Pushing the child raising phase into your early 60s is a big decision and a challenge you both should be excited to take on. Parental burnout is a real thing. The only people I know who have 3 little kids and high powered careers have at least one stay at home parent (or in one case kids raised by nannys)
Personally, I think you should stop using your inherited IRA to fund your current lifestyle. It’s your money. Save it for a rainy day.

The reality is that most professions are going to have significantly more challenges for Gen Z than there were for Boomers and elder GenXers. In my opinion listening to the complaints of workers old enough to leave the workforce is unwise because what they experienced won’t be relevant to the labor market Gen Z will encounter in their careers. Gen Z needs to think about their professions in the context of what they will face from his point forward. AI is going to reduce the demand for many types of white collar labor and it’s going to be the driving force in the labor market going forward. I think being a doctor is a field that is somewhat insulated from AI due to the induced shortage created by the AMA. At the end of the day, i think it is...

It can be done without, but you won’t see as much. Nice and Lyon can be done with public transport and Uber. I don’t know much about Toulouse or Nantes…they are less touristy.

Re: Took dream job and essentially in Retirement (withdrawing) while working (accumulating)
This is cynical millennial thinking but given the divorce rate in the US, I think it’s only prudent to think of your nest egg as 50% yours and 50% belonging to your spouse. So $1.5 million heading into retirement is only $750k belonging to you. If you’re comfortable with and planning to head into retirement with $750k then great. Divorce aside, running out of money in retirement is actually a much bigger risk to the woman because we tend to live longer and on whatever is left after the end of life medical care expenses for the man. I think that’s my takeaway, don’t have this conversation with us. Have it with your spouse. Lay out the negative deficit and make sure you are both collectively on board and comfortable with the current situation...

I would be careful about whose opinions you listen to on this topic. I consistently see people on this forum and other general financial forums advising people to not use the student loan forgiveness programs simply because they don’t like debt or they don’t like that the programs exist or they don’t think the programs will exist in the future even though there is no evidence that will be the case. They are not giving you financial advice, it’s a political opinion veiled as financial advice. Do what makes sense for you financially. The PSLF program exists for public servants like your wife. If it saves you $26k then to me that’s a no brainer. You can file married filing separately and reduce her monthly payments further. As an aside, there ...

I say try for the NIH program. $20k forgiveness is a decent chunk of money even if it is administratively sorta annoying to deal with. If you don’t win the award then re-evaluate. I wouldn’t worry about the forgiveness being taxable income. You’re likely in a low enough tax bracket that the taxes will only be a few hundred dollars. Don’t let the tax tail wag the dog.

Your D is young, my advice is to pull way back on the pressure even if D initiates. Practice a few phrases: ‘you’re young, you don’t need to worry about that yet’ ‘make sure you’re making friends and having fun’ ‘what are your vacation plans’ ‘renting is ok when you’re young, it gives you flexibility’, ‘you’re doing great, just keep it up’ If she has this level of financial anxiety about homes and daycare at 23 and is doing well, then she needs a voice that reduces the pressure on her rather than amplify it with advice or problem solving. Adulting is a marathon, not a sprint.

1-2 months for a bathroom remodel seems like a lot. I would do whatever I could to speed up the project and minimize the time the shower and toilet are,out of order. Even if it means two stage demolition or other compromises. Most people move out of houses when they’re at the stage of no plumbing for long stretches. In my book, an Airbnbor or other monthly rental would be preferable to sponge baths and porta potties.

I lived car free for awhile and have quite a bit of experience at several busy neighborhood car rental locations. I’ve witnessed a lot of swaps and what car rental locations will do for customers. If there are no vehicles at the location, they can get them from other locations or will send customers to other locations. However, in busy periods sometimes all the vehicles are out and everyone is SOL, but I think that’s more rare and tended to happen during very peak tourist season. Since you’re very smartly picking up the day prior, my suggestion is to call ahead before you come to pick up and ask about whether the van is there and will be ready for young pick up at 5pm. If you sense some hesitation, then get there a little early and expect i...

If the interest accrued during school has not yet been capitalized yet then paying off the interest will be a small savings as you avoid paying interest on interest. If the interest has already capitalized, then it’s just a $6600 loan and there’s no reason to worry about principal vs interest. My advice, do the lump sum and then work with your child to find a reasonably aggressive repayment schedule for the balance of the loan. Knowing the interest rate is important because that will help your child decide how aggressive they want to be with repayment. Things to consider: There is a small tax deduction for student loan interest for those who make <$80k/yr and bank accounts are earning at least 4% these days so saving vs repayment is sort o...

This is partially true. Whenever I’m in a big city, I like to stay near the city’s main park if I can because i enjoy walking through the park and its usually guaranteed to be a nice neighborhood. I stayed near the Bayswater/Queensway tube station on the north side of Hyde Park and it was a good location. Perfect location for an evening bike ride/walks around Hyde park after the crowds thinned and in the surrounding neighborhoods like Kensington and Notting Hill. Anyway, in my opinion if you have small children and want a no waste food budget then pitch in with the meal planning, shopping, and cooking. Create some meals from the back of the cabinet.
