Re: Quickest Path to Financial Independence

As others have noted. It is not a " quick path" I guess it could be if you can save 70%+ of your income but that is definitely not the average person.

A good book on the topic is Jim Colin's simple path to wealth. It is all about simplifying your investment life and saving for FI.

I'm late 20s on the path as well and understand wanting it to be a quick journey but math is math and your two options are earn more or spend less.

Good luck !

Re: Which Small SUV for 15 Year Reliability?

Long time Subaru owner here, my advice would be pick the one you enjoy driving most and take good care of it. Most cars today are engineered to last a long time. Yes there are some quirks for different brands but if you are aware of it you can adequately plan for the maintenance. I currently have a 2015 outback and thoroughly enjoy it. No issues with oil burning. The local shop cited it was more common in manual transmissions than automatics. But who knows. I also have an 08 Impreza wagon that will get a head gasket replacement at 100k when the timing belt and water pump is repaired regardless if it is burning coolant or not. I would rather do the work and not have needed it than have the alternate scenario. Especially given the fact it doe...

Agreed with the poster above. Hybrid may be a good I option. Also Craigslist is where I look for road bikes. Depending on your area there may be a bunch of good options for 600 -1,000. And if your not a fan you can relist the bike and hopefully not lose anything on the flip. Good luck! Cycling is a blast. Get some good shorts and shoes. It definitely helps.

Do you have any options to invest in a 401k plan? If so, is it maxed out in addition to the IRA? I would probably start there. If the 401k + IRA is maxed out a taxable account, emergency fund or debt elimination would he next on the list. There is a lot you could do with $500 a month for sure.

I have a brand new outback and have similar low mpg numbers. Though my commute is 2 mIles each way in 30 degree weather, so I don't expect stellar numbers.

I think normal driving distance greatly impacts overall mpg. I would recommend getting it out on some highway trips as you complete the engine break in phase - read the manual if you haven't done so already.

Good luck with the new car ! They are great vehicles.

Re: What is the appropriate tip at Starbucks on Christmas morning?

I will start with saying I worked for Starbucks for nearly 7 years. While Christmas day is advertised as volunteer and optional this is not exactly true in a lot of stores. Some manager see fit to assign people Christmas day regardless if the employee was available, had a family gathering and so forth.

That being said I think a couple bucks is appropriate 3-5$. The tips are split for the employees who actually worked that day so it is very equitable compared to normal tip distribution practices.

Merry Christmas everyone !

I just purcahsed a 2015 Outback, as my third Subaru and I can say I am extremely happy with my decision. It has been very comfortable for long trips and gets really good gas mileage ( 31 mpg freeway ). I think the crosstrek would be a really good option for what you need; I would drive the Outback and the Forester as well to get a feel for the differences between the 3 cars.
If you can afford it the eyesight upgrade is extremely handy as well. I was sold on it from day 1, while it does have some quirks ( lots of beeping ) it is extremely convenient for maintaining safe driving distance.

I am an oregon native. If you are looking to move there are a ton of great cities or pockets of portland to move to. My biggest advice is to work close to home or look at using the MAX lines as an option for commuting. Driving is not near as bad as other cities but certainly can be frustrating due to the amount of bridges we have.

If you have any questions on parts of the city you are considering either PM me or reply on the thread.

Re: [new position, facing an] hour commute (each way)

Commuting definitely impacts overall quality of life. I took a job a couple years ago which was a significant opportunity and pay increase, but the commute wears me down for sure. Most days I ride public transit ( train ) it is 50 minutes total ride time with a 10 minute drive to and from the station. Unfortunately with legalization of Marijuana this will not be a viable option for much longer.
The morning drive in is about 30 minutes which isn't awful for 15 mile commute. The commute back home is generally 1.25 hours, all city traffic with a manual transmission.
Parking downtown is 1 mile away from the office for the more affordable option. I could pay 60$ more per month to be closer. The trade off seems tough to make

Wife currently drives 2008 subaru impreza with 70k. Car runs great but it will need timing belt, clutch and head gaskets done soon. Most of the miles are city driven very little freeway. The plan is to sell the older one in the next couple years to upgrade to an Outack or Acura RDX for the wife and I will inherit the 2008 impreza until turns 10 or hits 170k. I would advise against shooting video with a dslr it is painful and expensive. auto focus is not quick, manual generally works much better. But requires a lot of fine tuning if you want proper DOF. I would get a Sony handicam or Canon Vixia with an internal drive for filming kids. If they play sports later you will be very glad to have that vs trying to use a dslr.

Hello OP! Congrats on starting to get your financial house in order. 40 is definitely not too late; in just a few short years from now you will be amazed at how much progress you've made. To answer your questions: I don't think you should cash out your old 401k nor delay investing until you have your credit card debt paid off, and I don't think you should sell your house either. Here's a step-by-step recommendation for you. Steps 1-4 can be done in an afternoon. Step 1 : Rollover your old 401k into your current 401k. The funds you've picked in your current 401k are very good; you'll want to rebalance to a 80% stocks / 20% bonds allocation, but other than that you're making good choices here already. Step 2 : Start contributing the maximum ...

Unless you are going to continue to be an HCE and your wife resumes a normal job after the self employment. I do agree with paying down debt 6% is tough to beat guarantee in the market

I am in a very similar situation except my wife and I have been married a few years. As others said, come up with a plan to repay debt and stick to it. And try not to obsess over not investing a large amount of money every year. I had to take a break from this forum for a while because I got stuck in the mentality of I should be making more / saving more. But it didn't line up with my debt strategy so I had to refocus. That line of thought can be extremely discouraging especially when it seems like there is no end to the pit.

Re: Honda CRV or Subaru Outback?

I question what the other posters did to 'self destruct' their Subaru's at 40k and 60k. That is very unusual for otherwise bullet proof and reliable vehicles. Some of the older models did have issues with spun bearings, timing belts, and burning oil. There are also severe 'high performance' engines that are frequently abused by their owners. My family has owned Imprezas and a Forester and have had nothing but reliable vehicles. In regards to the 2 blown motors I would venture a guess it was head gasket related and the owners didnt track oil consumption or coolant. Generally 2 indicators. Also subaru of america will sometimes kick in money for major repairs if abnormal issues occur. I currently own 2 imprezas and have enjoyed them thoroughl...

Mystic. One thing would consider doing is increasing 401k contributions and using part of the emergency fund to cover living expenses for a 6 month period. That way you can reduce on hand cash while taking full advantage of the employer match. Once you are down to a desired EF amount you could drop contribution back to a sustainable level.

there is no such thing as a no-cost refi - you will pay for it in a worse interest rate. Just shop around, I like zillow.com for mortgage quotes, you can refi for 30 years fixed for around 3.5% these days, if that's 1% or more better than your current rate, it's probably worth refinancing. use this to calculate the break-even period: http://www.mtgprofessor.com/calculators/Calculator3a.html but if you'll only be in the house 5 years, you may consider a 5/5 ARM also? Wouldn't a 5/5 ARM be risky for the OP if they were unable to sell the house within the allotted time frame they could get slammed on interest payments. It would be a nice savings on the front end though, and they could always refi out of the 5/5 when it was close to the end I ...

I am wondering if anyone on here takes advantage of this deal and how much you save annually? I am hopefully calling my agent today to ask about applying this to my wifes car as she only drives to work and home ( easily below the limit ).
