Re: VG Brokerage 1099-DIV Summary Amounts Don't Match Detail Amounts
Thank you for your quick reply. Yes, I understand that I have to enter both sets of figures for the correct totals, it's the brokerage statement that has the conflicted numbers: summary numbers on page 1 don't match the detail numbers on the detail pages 3, 4 and 5.

VG Brokerage 1099-DIV Summary Amounts Don't Match Detail Amounts
Hello and Help, Converted to VG brokerage in September so have the old and trusty 1 page 1099-DIV with one line income for each of our 3 funds (Box 1a, Box 1b, etc. headings for the first 8 months of 2023. Then have the 4 month 8-page brokerage 1099-DIV with mismatching Dividends and Distribution amounts on the summary page vs. the individual fund total pages. Line 1a, 1b, and 2a summary totals (Total Ordinary Dividends, Qualified Dividends Total Capital Gains) do not match the subtotals of all the amounts on the detail pages. There's about a 2-3% discrepancy for each amount. Has anyone seen this? How was it resolved? I don't look forward to calling Vanguard but will put it on my schedule this week if no one here has any suggestions. Lackin...

Yes, we have a smallish VG cash account that we spend from along with Target Retirement always with dividends reinvested that has the bond allocation built in. Our RMDs go into this account as cash to feed checking and they usually last for the next year. Once we needed a large amount to buy our condo so we withdrew from our Roths.

Been retired for 12 years and using McClung's Prime Harvesting Strategy. Allocation 30/70 and following the 4% guideline (withdrawing at 3.5% rate) our retirement total is larger than when we retired. One note: Instead of waiting until stocks reach 120% to sell into bonds we sell when our stocks reach 110% of original balance. You can find the details in Chapter 3 (free for download) of Living Off Your Money : "The Prime Harvesting Strategy – A New Strategy Prime Harvesting is formed out of the top-performing characteristics of the preceding strategies. Forgot to add own house in Indiana(paid off) and want a winter place at the Villages in Fl. Roth has enough to buy outright ( about 430K) and would be taking from childrens inheritance leaving them some left over( 500K or so). We are 73 with no debt. Yes, buying a house especially from a Roth is sort of just a transfer of assets from money to a house. BUT, please watch a number of youtubes on the costs associated with living in The Villages whether you live there full or part time. Property taxes; utilities (water, gas, electric) lawn maintenance and irrigation (villas usually not), monthly amenity fee, home insurance (insurers may now want age of roof and hot water tank) to just name most of the expenses. Need at least one or two golf car...

Re: Oil change place left cap off... many miles driven
When you get home, always check any work that a shop has done if it's visually possible. I've had no air filter inserted but charged for it, just the cover laying on the battery; after a cooling/drain flush they only filled it without having the thermostat open so only partially filled; after tire rotation no valve caps put back on after they checked air pressure; check oil level and for leaks afterward after a change; yes, oil filler cap not reinstalled. We are all human and make mistakes so I'd rather find out in my driveway rather than on the highway. I don't mind since I usually get a "discount" next time I have it serviced.

Re: Reverse drawdown for retirees
Probably more info than you want but here goes. I wanted to keep retirement simple and no timing. "Buying back in" I just can't mentally deal with in case I incur a larger loss than would happen by keeping my conservative allocation. Now 12 years into retirement and was 80/20 pre-retirement. 10 years before retirement every Jan we rebalanced into bonds by 5% regardless of market conditions. Sort of like dollar cost averaging but once a year. So we've been running 30/70 since we retired with a 4% withdrawal rate. Happy we missed the recent market declines in stocks. And we use RMDs to keep our allocation. Our retirement balance now is higher than when we retired. Our withdrawal method every December for RMDs is called Prime Harvest...

Yes, if and when you hire an electrician ensure that he/she is well educated in grounding and grounding sub panels. BTW, is your house well grounded, I mean two copper rods driven several feet into the ground spaced several feet apart? Don't count on "visual grounds" like on a water pipe since you don't know if the incoming water pipe is metal or plastic. Good luck.

We had power fluctuation issues sporadically for months, large change in temperature related but not always. Power company finally agreed to hook up a monitor for 30 days. After them agreeing there was a problem, bottom line, it was a loose/poor/old connection between ground and neutral causing the voltage to float at times. When voltage floating it would cause some of our lights and appliances to flicker or not work correctly. Where was this problem? On the street on their end or at your property? That was part of the problem, power company saying it was our issue. We lived in the end unit of 6 townhouses and our outside wall had the huge panel for the 6 meters facing south so hot sun would bake the panel along with driving rains in summe...

I never had a claim in 50 years of driving. Ran over a small suitcase at night in the rain with plastic and bumper damage at $2800 with $500 deductible. Filed claim with Travelers. Next policy renewal rate went up 45% so I'll pay for the claim in 3 years! Just saying. I wouldn't have filed if I knew the premium would increase that much. Maybe part was due to general annual increase in premium.

In FL an elderly neighbor passed away in an over 55 development which has lot rent of $700-$900 per month. In talking with her son several weeks later I asked if/when he would put the house on the market. He said he could not until her estate went through probate. He was unable to put the house on the market while making the monthly lot rent payments and it took him about 7 or 8 months before we saw a for sale sign on the house. Don't recall how long it took to sell. Just one example. FYI only. On average it takes a couple of weeks in Florida from the time we file the forms. Thank you for this info. I did wonder what was going on as it seemed extreme but I didn't pry and only saw him at a distance a couple of times during that time.

I too am long term Vanguard, 40 years, only mutual funds rarely traded/exchanged except for RMDs, and retired. I've read 40+ pages on a couple of threads and give up finding my answers so if someone could be kind enough to answer a few questions, I'd really appreciate it. 1. Exactly what happens visually when I hit the "transition this account button" for each of my wife and my 8 accounts total? Before I act I will print out all applicable pages. Will that "old account" disappear from the displayed page immediately? Will I see a new set of accounts hopefully with the same financial informati...

Re: someone with my name keeps using my email address
With my email, dots matter. I've had my email address for so long (30+ years) I can't remember but I was able to get: first initial last name @ After many years a lady probably wanted to use the same address with her name but could not so she inserted a dot after her first initial, same as mine, and her last name. In many typefaces the dot is nearly invisible as it blends in with her first initial and her last name so people manually inputting her address don't always see the dot. She lives/lived in NJ and has a huge following of well established members in different clubs and organizations that have large distribution lists. She must have changed email providers and suddenly I was getting many of these misdirected emails over the span of a...

Re: Flying to Hawaii with an overnight or two on the West Coast
DW and I took our Hawaii trip about a decade ago. We decided on touring Hawaii via Norwegian's Pride of America based in HNL. We arrived 2 days early for an entire somber day at Pearl Harbor and then another day on the North Shore and Bonzai Pipeline to watch the surfers and the huge waves roll in. Usually a couple of ambulances stationed there for potential surfing injuries. The ship is your hotel and takes you to 3 islands, 2 of which you stay overnight so people rent a vehicle for nearly 2 days each at the 2 ports so you can self explore. There are over 100 excursions to choose from. We didn't rent a vehicle but booked 2 excursions every day (except an all day "Road to Hana" tour on Maui) so ate breakfast in cabin at 5 AM to be...

You can buy a Sun Pass Mini for $5 which you stick on the windshield (and cannot be peeled off unless due care is used and is meant for only one vehicle use). They are sold in many stores (food stores, drugstores)
https://www.sunpass.com/en/about/sunpas ... ders.shtml
This will work if you are going to keep the rental for your trip duration.
You have to open a Sun Pass account with a credit card and deposit funds.
I don't know how far north you can use it since the Illinois area has several toll roads using EZ-Pass. There has been progress getting the various transponders to be compatible.
You could even get an EZ-Pass transponder in FL but you have to go to an EZ-Pass location.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Gillette's Sensor razor/blades. Being 75, I've tried many types of "wet" shaving including the mug and brush, and the only one that I found to work best was the original Gillette Sensor, a two blade combo. When Gillette brought it to 3 blades, Sensor 3, I was in shave heaven. But I was dissatisfied with only 1-2 weeks out of a blade. Then, on this forum, there was a thread started about stropping your blades. I started and with a little practice, I now routinely get 2-3 months out of 1 blade. Then Gillette stopped selling (or the stores did) the 4 or 8 pack of expensive Sensor 3 blades and instead were selling the disposable Sensor 3, and they were about 50% cheaper than a single blade so now I b...

It's an excellent, in my opinion and own it, 40/60 conservative managed fund with a long history. Go to morningstar.com and enter the ticker and look at the Chart and Performance tabs and you'll get a picture of its short to long term performance. Short term (1-day, 1-week, 1-month, 3-month and YTD are in the bottom 2 quartiles of performance which is a good thing, you would be buying in low. Long term performance is consistently in the top 2 quartiles. Its 15 year performance ranks it number 3 out of 190 similar funds.

Can you determine the manufacturer and check with them? About 20 years ago I had a double pane window get cloudy and I called the company locally in NH and they told me they guarantee their windows for life! I was shocked so it was replaced at no charge. If you enter VWIAX on the Morningstar website and click the performance tab under Total Return % you will see that the performance for the last 11 years shows that the fund has been in the top 2 quartiles 10 out of the 11 years, and, further down at Trailing Returns, you will see that it has been in the top quartile of performance 1 month, 3 month, YTD, 1 year, 3 year, 5 year, 10 year and 15 year! You cannot ask for better performance from a domestic low-cost balanced fund. You should hold this for the rest of your investing life and not worry about it.
Also, everyone hates to see their investments "shrink" but this has been and still is a perfect buying opportunity.

Re: What to do with my Roth IRA
Why would think of selling it? I know history is no indication of future returns but if you check Morningstar, it has been in the TOP QUARTILE every year except 1 in the last 10 years???

Re: What are you guys doing during this Downturn?
If you think about it and being in a three fund, you should DOUBLE your monthly investment and then you don't have to worry about when and how much to buy back in when the market returns. You could miss some of the largest daily market increases that take place after downturns and you will have purchased shares at a cheap price. All done automatically.

Yes, invest all immediately. But be careful, you only have 60 days to roll it over or else pay the tax penalty if you are younger than 59 1/2.

Thanks again. A copied and pasted Word document worked just fine. Yeah, I figured maybe this info was back in the thread but didn't want to search 9 pages looking for something that might exist.

OK, great! Hadn't thought about that avenue because I'm so focused on trying to get what exists to work. Maybe I can escape without having to reformat anything as long as all the info is there.

Re: Vanguard website succumbs to "Fisher-Price" UI design
Hello Everyone: Need help please using VG's new near-sighted Mr. McGoo website! I'm trying to print historical information on my Target Retirement Fund for capital gains and dividends purposes and the time span is from Jan 2010-present which is about 985 line items. I have no trouble getting and seeing the information I need but when trying to print the pages, the dates of the transactions in the first column disappear and are not printed on the printout so the information is incomplete and not useful. I tried reducing the web page image size but as expected that didn't do anything. Also tried landscape to maximize print area but no help there either. Usually if the image size is larger than the paper size the right-hand information gets tr...

Re: 80 yr.old and Las Vegas Blowout
My wife and I have a Bank of America account and use it to withdraw money while in Las Vegas (and CT and FL) if/when we need cash. B of A are in many if not all US States. There is a daily limit cash amounts and the first 6 or so transactions in a month are free, something like that. When we need larger amount we go to the branch.

Re: Vanguard closing fund prices link is useless
Yes, it's unbelievable that VG could take something so simple and concise on one page and blow it up to over 200 pages, and, over 25 screen shots for each fund! And further frustrating that there is no real feedback loop that I can find other than a private message.
To continue my feelings about new and improved websites and web pages, the trend seems to be style and attractiveness rather than usability like in previous years.
Thanks 50/50 for that "shortcut".
I guess I will abandon all VG web pages until I need to transact something and then sign in. I can use Morningstar for what I need in the interim.
