Re: Unable to mobile-deposit a check at Fidelity
I entered routing and account numbers and was take to a screen to enter bank login info. Seems to be no way to avoid that. Are you saying I should intentionally fail the bank login test and will then be taken to a screen with some alternative approach (micro deposit?)

Unable to mobile-deposit a check at Fidelity
I'm trying to fund a T-IRA at Fidelity. I already have one there and want to add my contribution for 2023 to it. When I try to do a mobile deposit with the Fidelity app, I get an error: "None of your accounts is eligible to receive deposits via a check". (The exact wording may be slightly different but this is the gist.) Their FAQ states that T-IRA accounts can be funded by mobile deposit. I have lockdown mode turned on but my understanding is that it only blocks transfers out, not in. So, I'm guessing that's not it. I'll call them tomorrow but thought I'd tap the collective wisdom here tonight. I could link my bank account to Fidelity and did try that first. But Fidelity wants my bank's username and password, which I refuse to gi...

Re: Delta AMEX Platinum--Now with expanded benefits and ... higher annual fee
OP here. An email earlier this month from AMEX about its co-branded Delta Platinum card had touted "expanded options to redeem [the Delta companion pass] for travel to Hawaii and Alaska..." (plus a few other exotic locales). Turns out that it may not be all that it's cracked up to be. The official Delta rules make no mention of Hawaii or Alaska. Further, Nerdwallet states the following: "Residents of Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico or the United States Virgin Islands must originate from there to the 48 contiguous United States and have an address on their SkyMiles account in Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico or the USVI to use the perk. That's bummer news for those of us who live in the contiguous United States and dream of traveling t...

Re: Another Wells Fargo Story. What to do?
I have a WF account that is mostly dormant. I get their email annually stating that if I don't take action, the assests will revert to the state via escheat (I had to look that word up the first time, lol).
Anyways, when I log-in, there's a "reactivate account" link that I click and I'm good for another year. For good measure, I go to the local WF ATM and do a small withdrawal as well.

Re: Delta AMEX Platinum--Now with expanded benefits and ... higher annual fee
I believe the benefits are effective today for anything issued or booked today or after. So for example, if your renewal is between now and May 1, you will get an expanded companion certificate on your renewal date for the current renewal fee of $250. Q: When will I receive my enhanced Companion Certificate eligible for the new destinations? A: Each year, the Companion Certificate will be made available for redemption on delta.com in your Card Account renewal month. Companion Certificates issued on or after February 1, 2024, will be eligible for redemption to the expanded destinations. Companion Certificates issued prior to February 1, 2024, will not be eligible for redemption to the expanded destinations I found the FAQ section on this we...

The new fee kicks in after May 1 this year. So, if your renewal is before that (as mine is) you get a 1-year reprieve (and I am guessing the new benefits don’t kick in until then).

Just got the email.
New benefits include expanded use of companion ticket (to the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico, and Alaska), $120 Resy dining credit, $120 rideshare credit, $150 Delta Stays credit, plus some other goodies. And, of course, an increase in the annual fee (by $100 to $350). Lotsa fine print that hurt my head to read

Re: Redeeming Paper EE Savings Bonds
I redeemed a bunch of matured EE Bonds recently by mailing them to the Federal Reserve in Minneapolis (USPS first class mail). Started small by mailing a couple in to see how it went. Took about 8-10 weeks for the money to show up in my bank account. After that I just cashed them out all at once. (If the value exceeds 1K, you need to have the redemption form, FSF1522, notarized.)
It's a good idea to note down the bond numbers or take pictures before sending them in, in case they get lost.

Selling HSA investments due to change in administrator. Any tax implications?
Hi all,
The subject line sort of says it all, but here is more detail.
My employer is switching its HSA administrator. The new administrator has better investment options and I am considering moving my HSA investments there. The move won't be in-kind though; I have to sell my current investments, move the proceeds over, then buy at the new place.
Would the sale trigger any taxes? I have read the Boglehead HSA wiki and some related threads and I believe that the answer is "no", but I want to make sure and not mess up. (There are enough cap gains that I'd stay put if there were taxes involved.)
I don't live in CA or NJ, which treat HSAs differently than the other states.
Thank you.

Re: Fast Money: Verizon $10/mo discount per line retention credit
So, I got my Verizon bill a few days ago and noticed that the loyalty credit of $10/line was applied to only one of my two lines. I called Verizon and the customer service rep insisted repeatedly that the credit was for only the primary line. This despite the fact that Verizon sent me a letter a while back confirming that the discount would be applied to each active phone line for 12 months.
Curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Status of Death Valley NP
I will be in SoCal in January and am considering a side trip to Death Valley National Park. Their website shows the park as closed for repairs from flooding earlier in the year. A map there shows that a few roads are actually open but there may be long back-ups.
Here’s a link to the map. One can click on the roads to get more info. Link
Calls to a couple of hotels there indicate they are open.
Has anyone visited the park recently (or does anyone live in the vicinity)? If so, is it worth the 5-hour drive under the current circumstances?
Thanks.

Re: Questions Re New Gmail, GV#(+Yubikey?) for fin.account protection
Unfortunately, there is another way that one could lose access long-term (potentially permanently) to one’s gmail that none of the methods discussed (Yubikey, etc.) can protect against.
Namely, Google locking the account due to an inadvertent oversight on the part of the user.
See this article from the NYT yesterday.
What’s the backup plan then?

Password reset issue on verizonwireless.com
I'm having no luck resetting my password at verizonwireless.com (once logged-in with my current password). The password requirements of the site are:
1. Should not be any of the five most recent passwords
2. 8 to 20 characters
3. At least one letter
4. At least one number
5. Hard to guess
I am able to meet requirements #1 through #4 but try as I might I am unable to meet #5---the site keeps saying the password is not valid. This happens even if I type in a completely random string of numbers, mixed case letters, and special chars (I basically closed my eyes and typed away to test this).
Has anyone else here had this issue?

Help! Drowning in spam phone calls
Suddenly over the past month I've started getting 20-30 spam calls a day on my iPhone--all from different numbers from within my own area code. I turned on call silencing about three weeks ago, so these calls have been going to voicemail. Each voicemail is exactly 21 seconds long and consists of merely a low- to medium-pitch humming sound; no voice. Every few hours I go through my list of recent calls and block the spams. However, the volume of spam calls hasn't gone down; in fact it has increased. Could it be that the transfer to voicemail identifies my number as a live one and encourages follow-up robo-calls? The unfortunate downside of call silencing is that I've missed answering some legitimate calls (e.g., several from the doctor's off...

Re: Manual Aprilaire humidistat setting for HVAC humidifier?
Aprilaire 600 here. Installed on return duct and plumbed to hot water. Originally, it was installed with an outdoor sensor but when we changed the HVAC system, the HVAC guy bypassed the exterior sensor and connected it to our Lennox programmable thermostat. I don't find this as accurate as the original set-up (more variation in indoor humidity and more window condensation). Like others I have an indoor humidstat that I consult and then adjust the humidity setting periodically based on this chart from Aprilaire. Just changed the water panel this weekend (the panel frame and water distribution tray were caked solid from last year).

Does this work if one has their phone on Verizon’s monthly payment plan? In other words, does Verizon assume that such people are unlikely to leave them? It’s been 48 hours since I tried this trick but no discount message yet.

Re: Typed in Gmail password into wrong website--any risk?
Just change your password. It is good to roll them periodically anyways. actually, the current advice by many security orgs is contrary, absent a specific need Quite happy to read that! I agree it isn't necessary to roll passwords for no reason. However, if I accidentally send my email account & password somewhere (in this case, to some other website), I would *absolutely* change the gmail password. I might not be as worried about a password for something less important like ... a bank account :) :) :) But have you considered: - If you lose access to your gmail account it is nearly impossible to get access back (Google doesn't know you from John) - Half the websites you go to would reset your password for you using only access to your ...

Re: Typed in Gmail password into wrong website--any risk?
As I had mentioned above, I entered at the other site both my gmail id (as username) and my gmail password. My concern was if that site was breached, then the combination of gmail id and password would be available to a hacker. If the password was in cleartext then my gmail account would potentially be at risk.
My guess is that the security protocols at the other (reputable) site are strong enough that the password wouldn’t be stored in the clear. Plus I have 2FA on my gmail account. In any case, to be safe, I changed my gmail password.
Thanks for all the responses.

Typed in Gmail password into wrong website--any risk?
I accidentally typed in my Gmail password into another website (a reputable one). My username on the latter is my Gmail address.
I understand that passwords are presented to the login system as encrypted hashes etc., not in cleartext. Still wondering if I did something risky and should change my Gmail password. The password is (by design) very long but I can type it in my sleep , so somewhat reluctant to re-learn a new long password for an account I use frequently. I do have 2FA (via authenticator app) enabled on the account.

<Related question so piggybacking here instead of starting a new thread.>
I have the opportunity to do an in-plan Roth conversion of a 401k. These would be for contributions and earnings in 2023 and earlier.
If I did the conversion starting in January 2024, would the converted Roth be exempt from RMD? Or would it count towards RMD since the converted assets would be pre-2024? If the latter, then I'd consider starting the process now to spread out the tax hit a bit.
Thanks.

I was recently reviewing my death binder for current accuracy. I maintained a cover sheet that was readily accessible with instructions on how to access the full binder digitally to include all supporting account statements and other required documentation. In the course of this exercise I decided to give these arrangements a rehearsal. I asked my wife to follow the instructions as if I passed. I quickly realized my digital security posture (password manager and 2FA hardware keys), while extremely robust, was prohibitive and not something that my wife would be able to navigate in the clearest of minds let alone with more advanced age or while grieving. This led me to the revelation that I just need to make my financial life much more simpl...

About record-keeping when gifting money
DW and I plan to gift $30K to our child. In order for each of us to stay under the current annual exclusion limit of 17K per recipient, we plan to each gift 15K.
Questions:
(1) If we each write a check for 15K from our joint account, will the info on the check (date, child's name, amount, and signature of mom or dad) be sufficient to establish that the annual limit was not breached? (We would retain photocopies of the two checks in our files.)
(2) Would doing two separate ACH transactions from our joint account to the child's account be an option as far as record-keeping is concerned?
(3) Also, is there anything else to be aware of, in general, when gifting?
Thanks in advance.

Setting up an order trigger at Schwab
I need to have an order executed at Schwab during a time when I will be away continuously from internet and phone access for several days. (Basically, I want to invest the proceeds of a T-Bill maturing during that time in a money market fund, instead of having it sit in the settlement fund earning next to nothing.)
I am looking at the instructions at this page, which indicate that something like this can be done.
But I am stuck at step 3 of "Create an Advanced Order" as I don't see the indicated "+" sign to click on anywhere in the All-In-One Trade Ticket.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: State Farm auto vs. everybody else
I'm shopping auto insurance for the first time in 40 years. Farmers has been going up, up, up..... State Farm is quoting much better rates. It had me scratching my head until I learned that, unlike most other carriers (including Farmers), State Farm does NOT offer accident forgiveness. Is this why their rates are so much more attractive? I have never had an accident claim (or any other non-glass claim) in over 40 years of driving, so I'm not really concerned about needing "forgiveness" anytime soon. Yeah, I know, famous last words..... We're both retired and drive combined less than 5000 miles a year, mostly around our safe town. Thanks for any inputs. Satisfied State Farm auto insurance policy holder for ~40 years (2-3 cars). Ha...

Re: AMEX now offering virtual card numbers
It looks like it has to be done in Chrome because that is needed to use Google Pay and the virtual card numbers are generated in Google Pay. It appears that it is only a single virtual card number though so it could easily end up being used by multiple vendors for recurring charges. Given that, I don't see much of a benefit vs just having a 2nd credit card that is only used for online purchases. If/when the underlying physical card expires, you need to get a new virtual card number so there isn't even any convenience in terms of maintaining continuity. I suppose there is some convenience in that all of the charges will appear on the same bill, but that isn't remotely enough to make me want to use it. According to the FAQ: "Each time y...

Re: Need for routine HVAC maintenance?
We have an annual contract via the local utility company for furnace maintenance. A few years ago, the technician found that the heat exchanger was cracked and had started leaking small amounts of CO. He shut the unit down (mandatory) and we replaced the unit soon afterwards; it was 20 years old and had seen a lot of use. Had we chosen to "fix things when they break", this problem would not have been discovered until too late (and I may not have been around to type this note ).

Re: TDAmeritrade account didnt migrate to Schwab.
My TDA account migrated this past weekend. I took snapshots of the account the day before and everything at the Schwab end was as it should be after the move. I had an account already at Schwab, so everything is now accessible via that login. I can no longer access the TDA account (it redirects me to Schwab). What I noticed at Schwab: My TDA assets show up as a separate sub-account at Schwab, with its own account number. My previous assets at Schwab also show up as a sub-account, with the original account number. There is a bit of fund duplication as a result: I now have two SWVXX's (Schwab Value Advantage Money Fund)--one that I had at TDA and one that I had at Schwab. I'll try to consolidate things (where possible) once the dust settles. ...

Moving money periodically from Schwab to Vanguard
I need to move (non-retirement) money periodically from Schwab to Vanguard. Is there a way to do this directly between their respective settlement funds? At both sites I only see the option to add bank info.
I could do this by using my Schwab Bank account as an intermediate account, but would like to avoid the extra step if possible (tedious, earns next to nothing for a few days, funds exposed to potential ATM shenanigans).
Thank you.

Follow-up call from SSA--how to verify it is legit?
DW just applied for SS benefits online. At the end of the process she got a message to the effect that someone from the SSA would follow up with a call if there were questions.
For those who have received such a call: What's the process by which one ascertains that this is a legit call? (Too many SS-related scams going around these days.)

Re: Computing SS earnings for self-employed person
Thanks! The numbers match up now.MP123 wrote: ↑Thu May 11, 2023 5:29 pm I think the net profit needs to be reduced by .9235 as on Sch SE line 4a. So the SS earnings would be either Sch SE box 6 or 9, whichever is lower.
I'm pretty sure that just the Sch SE info is sent to SS, so the amount they recorded should be on that form rather than derived from info on other forms.

Computing SS earnings for self-employed person
DW was self-employed in 2022. She just checked her online SSA account to see if the earnings record was updated properly after 2022 taxes had been filed in Feb. This was the first year of self-employment for her. We are seeing a small discrepancy in the listed earnings (SSA lists it as $72 less than what we computed using the formula below). We computed SS earnings as X-Y-Z, where: X = Amount in Box 1 of 1099-NEC (this is the amount of non-employee compensation) Y = Amount on line 28 of Schedule C (this is the deduction taken for business-related travel) Z = Amount on line 12 of Schedule SE (self-employment tax) minus amount on line 13 of Schedule SE (deduction for one-half of self-employment tax). Our logic here is that the line 13 amount ...

Re: Is Treasury auction cutoff time on Vanguard incorrect?
My understanding is that the cutoff time for non-competitive bids on T-Bills is noon Eastern on the auction date. However, Vanguard lists the cutoff as 12:00 a.m. (See example below.) 17 Week Bill — 04/11/2023 04/12/2023 12:00 a.m. , ET — — 04/18/2023 — The timing matters as I have a bill maturing tomorrow (4/11) and would like to put in the buy order on 4/12 morning once the funds hit my settlement account sometime on 4/11 (not sure when that happens but don't want to be waiting late into the night to check this). So, is Vanguard's cutoff really 12 a.m. or is that a typo? I would just go ahead and place the order. Your bill maturing on the 11 will arrive in your account sometime overnight. By the time your new T-Bill settles, you'll have ...
