Re: In-ground pool: renovate or remove?
We were in similar situation. Vinyl liner needed replacement, needed new cover and filter was getting clogged frequently.
After son moved to college, we did not use pool much . We called for three estimates from Homeadviser.com , and hired a company who took of everything , including town inspections. Cost was around 12 k , six years ago. it saved us $700 in annual property taxes, plus ongoing cost of opening/closing and maintenance. Very happy with the decision.

457(b) Plan Follow up
After meeting with the plan administrator I found out following details: (1) I can put in max 18 k per year (no catch up) (2) Two options in the plan a) Fixed account credits with a current annual rate declared by Pacific Life and annuity is 4.55% (guaranteed minimum 2%) (b) Indexed accounts interest based in part on the performance of their underlying index either 1 year US S & P 500 or 1 year international In addition, this is tied to the whole life insurance so there is Life insurance Death Benefit Whole life insurance costs are paid by the employer. (3) Can not be rolled over to IRA plan, I like the idea of saving up to 18 k per year, earning current yield of 4.55% (Fixed income) I have read about 457 b plan's risk Am I missing some...

457(b) Plan question
My employer is offering this plan starting next year. We (Mostly Physicians) will be meeting with the person who manages the plan for our employer.
I am 52 year old and currently contribute maximum in my 401 k plan.
Tax savings is the main reason, for considering this plan.
I have read 457 b plan description on Wiki which was very useful.
In addition to the usual questions (Choices of funds, expense rations etc) what other question should I raise at this meeting? especially related to 527 b plan?
Is there extra layer of fees added for the plan administration?

Nutribullet or Ninja extractor?
We had Nutribullet 900 which died after less than one year use. We liked the the product as we enjoyed the fruits/Veggies combination juices.
Now wondering what should be next purchase? another Nutribullet or Ninja juicer?
Cost Of Nutribullet is $100 and Ninja is $200.
Thanks

Re: SAT preparation
My son is strong student in Math, but not so strong in English. So we hired a tutor for English. Maybe he would have done well without a tutor, but we did not want to take a chance as SAT exam is a tricky one. He took SAT in early October of junior year as per his tutor's recommendation and did well (2330). He was able to focus on AP courses and research, and extra curricular activities for the rest of junior year
His friends were stressed with SAT and AP tests in Spring of Junior year.
So we were happy with his tutor's recommendation that he was ready in early October.

Pay off the mortgage. Start investing monthly mortgage amount in three fund portfolio. That's what we did. We use Intermediate tax exempt fund (VWIUX) in out taxable accounts. So far very happy with the outcome!

We were confused between the choice of RDX and BMW X3 and we finally bought X3. We bought on Dec.29th 2013 and we paid 6k more than RDX. However BMW offers four years of free maintenance and ride was superior than RDX. Repair costs of BMW will be higher than RDX after four years, hopefully we wont be stuck with BIG bills!

At his age 66 with portfolio size of half million dollars, and CDs earling 10% per year ( 7% after tax) why would your want to start investing in the market? Life style expenses are much lower in India and he has"Enough" assets to cover his retirement age. When you've won the game, why keep playing it? or start playing?

U Penn Engineering choice
My son was happy to hear early decision acceptance from The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. He has been a strong student of Physics, Chemistry and Math which led him to decide on U Penn Engineering program. In addition, Penn students have good interaction with other Penn schools like Wharton, Arts and Sciences and Nursing. My question is - as many of you are engineers - which field of engineering would you encourage him to pursue? How many of you have acquired dual degrees like finance or medicine after completing engineering at same or other institutes?
