I've made some posts about this. I am a 30+ year customer and it's clear Vanguard is a shell of its former self.
Be assured I was never a "problem" client. I rarely called, etc. Quite the opposite in fact. I had one Flagship Adviser who bothered the heck out of me and I told her to stop calling. Now I have no Flagship rep at all for the few times I really need help. Instead I am lumped in with every other investor and deal with clueless CS reps when I call.
Such a shame Vanguard let their company decline.

Re: Vanguard cash reserve check writing
Too bad about the confusion you ran into. sport had a good suggestion: exchange your MMF into the Vanguard Federal Money Market Fund, and then establish check writing on it. You used the term "accounts." But what kind of taxable "account" do you have with Vanguard: brokerage, or the "old-style" mutual-only only account? I ask because it's possible there's confusion related to what kind of account(s) you have and thus what steps you would need to take going forward. If you have a brokerage account, you really only have one account and it can hold multiple funds (including MMFs, ETFs, stocks). Also, by default it uses the Federal Money Market Fund as the default settlement fund . If you have the old-style mutual...

Just found out about this. All my checkwriting accts are useless. Vanguard tells me I have to open new accts to get checkwriting back. Vanguard is horrible at this point. Moving my money to Fidelity. If you have a Vanguard account, all you need to do for check writing is to put money into the Federal MM fund and establish check writing on that fund. It is not that big of a deal. If so how come Vanguard doesn't even know this? They said I can't convert the Admiral shares back to regular. They said new accts needed to be established if I wanted checkwriting. And therein lies the issue, Vanguard no longer has good CS. Every rep I have spoken to has been clueless and basically just looks up the info on the website and then gives me the wrong i...

Done with Vanguard
Vanguard is a shell of its former self. Having millions invested with them means nothing, you are the same to them as someone who has $5 invested since they got rid of Flagship. I made another post about the lack of CS now and it really hit home today.
My MM funds got converted to Admiral funds so apparently I lost the checkwriting capabilities? Call Vanguard and since there is no Flagship anymore I speak to clueless dolts who talk to me about "fund 66" and other useless info. They ARE CLUELESS.
Done with Vanguard. Taking my assets to Fidelity.

Relationship manager just seems a new term for representative. Flagship Select gets you an individual assigned rep. Vanguard and Schwab are at the top of JD Powers rankings: https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2020-us-self-directed-investor-satisfaction-study I continue to wonder why so many people here prefer Fidelity when they do worse in the survey. Perhaps posters here are not a representative sample. OTOH, if I consistently couldn't get a rep on the phone in a reasonable amount of time and were assured I'd get better service elsewhere (without paying much more for it), I'd move. What is Flagship Select? Frankly I don't need an assigned rep. I had one once who was a complete pain, kept calling me even after I told her to st...

Flagship client for 10+ years and I can't even reach anyone for two days. Even my secure message through their site has gone unanswered. My previous rep of course moved on to another position in the company, not that it really matters since he was never available either.
Got a call back from a non Flagship rep who was clueless. Fidelity answers my calls. Vanguard has clearly gotten too big to take care of their clients properly. I guess Vanguard wants me to close my account.

I own a 2002 CR-V and previously had an '89 Accord. I keep my vehicles a long time. I'm also a HMC shareholder. When it was time to purchase a sedan several years ago I bought a Hyundai. It (somewhat) pains me to say it but Hyundai and Kia are now where Honda and Toyota were in the 70's and 80's. I would recommend a Hyundai Tuscon or Santa Fe or a Kia Sportage or Sorrento. The Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro should also be considered if you can get away with smaller.

I'm not 100% sure my 2 lines are active on Ting. I set up voicemail and made a test call. They still show on my RingPlus dashboard. My "Current usage" screen on Ting shows "You don't have any active devices on your account". Both my devices are listed in the Device Settings tab. Both lines were "dumb phones" that I simply restarted. They did an automatic PRL update. I'm tempted to just kill both once my $35 is exhausted. One line is our 20+ year old "home phone" number. Very few call it. The whole RingPlus debacle has turned in to a scenario where I just watch it to see what happens... I see the same and my lines are active. Call 611 to be sure. I find myself in this exact situation and have decided to sell. The property is currently listed with a Realtor for $109K. It's a 2 bedroom 2 bath vacation home in Linville Land Harbor (LLH), in the mountains of North Carolina with a golf course view and many nearby amenities. LLH is near Banner Elk and Newland. The house is in excellent condition and requires nothing (it's even furnished).

Re: Dividends, and the curse of popularity
Many years ago I acquired individual stocks, mostly through direct purchase plans. Though I didn't purchase them specifically for it they all pay dividends. For most I have automatic reinvestment of dividends. Based on my cost basis some of the yields are quite high. There is a downside. My latest Schedule B had 19 entries for individual stocks. At this point it would be a lot of trouble to sell them so I hope to pass them on to my heirs.

Re: Anyone have A/C fail on an older Honda CRV?
Based on all of the problems described above and documented on the internet, what do you would if you currently have a 9 year old, 90,000 mile CR-V with no problems including the A/C? Is the probability of A/C failure in the next 5 years < 20%, 20-80%, > 80%? Assuming the A/C repair is between $700-3000 and the current residual value of the car is $7000-8000, would you keep driving or buy a different car? I could imagine 3 scenarios: - continue driving, A/C breaks = big loser - continue driving, A/C works = big winner - buy a different car = moderate loser (hedging one's bets) If anyone here could predict the future I don't think they'd be focusing on the CR-V's A/C. Windows 10 is fine. Its not earthshakingly different than any of their previous OSs. It's still Windows. You can tweak it to make it look and act like any of the previous versions. It's easy enough to shut off the so-called spying aspects if that's a concern. To keep using an old OS when a new one is available for free seems very un Bogleheadish.

I've had vacant properties next to and behind my house a few times over the years and it never bothered me. Made it nice and quiet until someone bought the house, which I'm sure will happen in your case. All houses eventually sell. If the new owner doesn't live up to your expectations get your city involved to make them fix things. For now you can mow the front lawn and things like that. As for "choosing" your new neighbors, someone already mentioned discrimination laws so why even go down that route? Re: Experience with Honda airbag recall?
Got both airbags replaced today. It's an older Honda so they had the parts. Though after reading another posters experience perhaps they just put in new but still potentially defective airbags thinking my vehicle will be out of commission before they self destruct or whatever they do. That's probably what they thought when they replaced the passenger airbag for the first time maybe 10 years ago.
On the phone they said two hours. At the dealer the advisor said 45 minutes for each. In actuality they probably worked on it for a little over an hour. Considering the expansion of the recall to include more Honda/Acuras and many other manufacturers as well I am sure this story will go on for quite a while.

On two Win 7 and one Win 8.1 computers I paid attention to offered updates (have WU set to let me choose) and did not install those related to Win 10. If I wasn't sure, a few forums (http://www.sevenforums, http://www.eightforums) and Googling helped me figure out which ones to not install. Never been nagged to update on any of them. Having said that the computer I bought with Win 10 has been just fine, its easy enough to turn of the so called spying settings and anything else controversial, and I will most likely upgrade the 8.1 (using the MCR tool as opposed to WU) to Win 10. Still not sure if I will update the two Win 7 machines.

Re: Experience with Honda airbag recall?
Your dealer and my dealer differ on the explanations as to why the parts were available. My dealer told me that in older vehicles Honda decided to replace the airbag with the exact same defective model, because the vehicle would be past it's useful life before the condensation built up in the airbag and would cause a problem. That's why they have the parts available. They are only putting the new airbags in the newer vehicles. Interesting. I wouldn't doubt you were given a truer explanation than me. But if that is the case it brings up several questions. Why would they replace one defective airbag with another? Do these things only throw shrapnel after a certain amount of time? And if they do what if someone keeps their vehicle another 10 ...

Old 401(k) and inherited IRA were with Fidelity so I just left them there (rolled over the 401(k)). I started to move some of it to Vanguard but got lazy. I also have a few stocks at Fidelity in a brokerage account. They've never tried to sell me anything. I think having assets in a couple of places is generally accepted as good practice.

Consider a Kia or Hyundai. Sportage/Sorrento, Tuscon/Santa Fe. They are what Honda was 30 years ago. Resale won't nearly be as good but if 1) you keep the vehicle forever (10 year warranty makes it that much easier) it really won't matter, 2) If you buy used you can get a good deal.

If you are considering a used car, consider a Hyundai. I have rented several times while on trips and been impressed. they have a long warranty period and on the used car market they are less expensive than Honda because the buying public has not caught up to the fact that they are good cars. When it was time for my last car purchase I bought a Hyundai Elantra. It was my first non Honda purchase in 24 years. The Civic they had out at that time was horrible, even Consumer Reports didn't recommend it. Frankly even after one refresh and one redesign (in four years!) I still don't think it is better than the Elantra. Hyundai reminds me of what Honda was like 30 years ago. My other vehicle is a Honda (albeit 14 years old) and for the most part ...

At least you care enough to figure out a way to not have them going off and on all night. So many people are either too stupid or too inconsiderate to care. I doubt they are referring to Honda. I know of quite a few who have taken rentals and don't know of anyone who has requested one and been turned down. All you have to do is ask. I'm having trouble with a link but here's an excerpt:
"The Takata Corp. air bag recall has become so massive that vehicle owners might wait months for repairs, which leaves many struggling to figure out how to get around in the meantime.
Dealerships are paying for rental cars, but some need to be pushed into offering them, customers complain. And drivers under age 25 or with weak insurance coverage or credit say they are encountering snags when they get to the rental counter."

Re: Experience with Honda airbag recall?
Honestly, I'm debating whether to even get my Honda fixed. I'm with you but not for the exact same reasons. I already had recall work related to the driver's side airbag done years ago on my Honda. They've been sending me letters for a while for more recalls. Pretty sure its for both driver's and passenger side. So the repair work they did apparently didn't take. I even got a phone call about the current recalls. Thought it was a scam after first. Never saw anything in the letters I got about them providing a rental. The first few letters implied I could get it fixed right away. I guess as the recall expanded that is no longer possible. Dealing with a long term rental car seems like a hassle. I suppose I should call and see when they can g...

Re: Free Windows 10 Upgrade, Yes or No?
I just got a new computer with Windows 10. The way I use my computers its really not that different from Win 7 or Win 8.1 It is still a Windows OS after all. I have three older computers (2xWin7, 1xWin8.1), now that I've had some time with Win 10 I think I will for sure upgrade the 8.1. The other two I am not so sure.

Re: FatWallet Cash Back Check Bounced
How much cashback are you getting from them? I gave up on that site since they copy everything from SlickDeals. If the cashback is that important there are other cashback sites you can use in place of FW.
As for your returned check perhaps your bank will waive the fee. Give them a call.

Re: Does my child need to file a tax return?
Thank you and everyone else who responded. I am very glad I asked the Boglehead community since my initial thought based on what I had read was that even though I knew my son's SS benefits would not be taxable I would still need to file a return. Now I can put this issue to rest.dodecahedron wrote: You are interpreting this completely correctly, based on the facts stated. We see many families with young children in circumstances similar to your son's at our VITA site and we tell them that their children do not have a filing requirement. The IRS really does not want to process a lot of pointless returns from children whose income is (almost) entirely Social Security.

Re: Does my child need to file a tax return?
Based on my interpretation of the applicable parts of p4012 I am going to say I do not need to file a return for my son. I am basing it on "Chart B - For Children and Other Dependents" on page A-2, which states: If your parent (or someone else) can claim you as a dependent, use this chart to see if you must file a return. In this chart, unearned income includes taxable interest, ordinary dividends, and capital gain distributions. It also includes unemployment compensation, taxable social security benefits, pensions, annuities, and distributions of unearned income from a trust. Earned income includes salaries, wages, tips, professional fees, and taxable scholarship and fellowship grants. Gross income is the total of your unearned an...

Does my child need to file a tax return?
My 8 yo receives SS benefits. I am unclear of how or even if I need to file a tax return for him. Here are some things on the subject I found while searching. The highlights: "Generally, a child won’t collect enough Social Security benefits to file, but if one-half his benefits, plus any additional income, exceed $25,000, you’ll have to file a separate return for your child." His income including SS benefits is lower than $25K. "your son is allowed to earn up to $5,700* (*this is from 2010 so the amount now would be $6300)-- the standard deduction amount -- before he is required to file a return. If however, he had federal income tax withheld, he may want to file a return to get a refund. Also, don't forget to check your stat...

Re: Anyone own KHC (Kraft Heinz) stock?
You can deduct their merger processing fee from the proceeds. Adjust the line item on your 8949 accordingly. My 1099-B is viewable online, still waiting for paper copy. Making up the numbers for example purposes: 1099-B lists two amounts for Box 1d for the date of sale 7/8/2015, Quantity Sold = 10 shares for $250 and then Quantity Sold = 2 shares for for the amount of "$50.00". I know the first is long term and the second is short term. Then it shows for the same Box 1d "Non-Covered Subtotals $250.00" with nothing in quantity sold and finally Box 1d "Grand Totals $280.00", again with nothing in quantity sold. Then it shows Box 1e "Grand Totals Cost or other basis $120". It says: "Box 5: Non-Cove...

So some brokerages have issued the 1099-B but Wells Fargo who administers for the direct shareholders hasn't. Doesn't make sense to me.

Re: State Farm Water Damage Claim
As the other poster said when I had a pinhole leak State Farm would only cover the damage done and mine was fairly minimal. So it wasn't worth it for me with my deductible. At least that's my memory of it. For me it was the plumbers' bill that was the major expense.

Re: Contacted by three heir locators
Yes it will cost you money. But using the heir locator is going to cost you money also. You have to make a guess what is cheaper. If you expect your share is 1 million bucks (maybe if you and your whole side could use the same lawyer), I would be comfortable saying your own lawyer is going to be cheaper. If it is 5k, I would go with the service. In between it gets interesting. It seems like a straight forward case (i.e. there is no will to dispute or anything. Other than fighting over who gets to be executor and how much to pay them, I am not sure there is going to be a lot of fight over if all the assets are liquid) but as I said I would want someone who has done it a 1000's times giving me an opinion. The amount of my share is in between...

Re: Contacted by three heir locators
Still hoping one of the people who felt this would be fairly easy to handle myself will chime in with what I should do now that I have spoken to a less than helpful probate clerk who wasn't able to provide "simple" instructions as so many thought would happen. She did provide the info. You need to file an objection. You need a lawyer to write one up for you. Seriously spend the 100 bucks and talk to some one that has done this a 1000 times for 15 mins and they will give you a very good idea what is involved. How would you find a lawyer 2000 miles away that is trustworthy? The Yellow Pages or a Google search? And you really think they will do it in 15 minutes? I highly doubt it. Also don't forget the filing fee if that information...

Re: Anyone own KHC (Kraft Heinz) stock?
Thanks for your input. I wonder how Fidelity was able to issue the 1099-B, if that is indeed true? Wells Fargo said supposedly the 1099-B should be mailed in three to five business days but I think they were just trying to placate me since a third party actually does the mailing.rgardne70 wrote:I am in the same situation with my brokerage (not Wells Fargo).
Tis unfortunate that in this day and age, it takes so long for companies to inform shareholders as to the tax consequences and issue the 1099.
The only solution is for Congress and the IRS to absolutely mandate that this task be completed by no later than January 15 so that 1099's can be issued in a timely fashion.
