Re: You don't get all the rebates if you take the 0% financing
Penfed is the only one I found that had a "new" refinance rate plus they tell you what it is! The few other banks that posted a rate (I think they were used car rates which were higher. Seems like everyone else wants you to fill out an application before they tell you what your rate will be. I think I finally wrapped my head around the numbers; not good at this. I'd pay $3558 interest on a 5 year 3.49% "new' refinance penfed loan. I found Citizens Access that had pretty good CD rates and created a ladder for 4 years (as the money was needed) and came up with $2316 in interest earned so that doesn't work. If I'd had just taken the 0% loan and forgone the $1500 I'd be $816 ahead vs investing in a 4 year CD ladder. I think it's ...

Re: $450 for 1.5 hour plumbing job normal?
I could see his price being somewhere in that ballpark if he had to cut a hole in the drywall, repair the leak, patch/prime/paint wall. Otherwise, he's already got several leftover pieces of 1/2 or 3/4 copper pipe laying around and several elbows (I do and I ain't no handyman, just a DIY). His reason being that parts are expensive is pure BS; I wouldn't trust him anymore. That's a $100-$150 job on a good day for a handyman who doesn't have a plumbers license and I'm giving him most of that money because 1) he showed up, 2) he made a service call and 3) to cover his overhead.

Re: You don't get all the rebates if you take the 0% financing
Just to let everyone know I signed the papers and the loan was through Ford Motor Co - the rate was 5.9%! I've decided that I don't really need the liquidity and have more than enough in non-pretax savings to just pay the thing off. The dealership asked me to make 3 payments so they got their incentive and I'm ok with that. Assuming I could find a 2.5% refinance loan and could find another 3%ish CD rate (Northwest FCU) I just don't if I'd bother or if it's worth it for this amount of money but I'm still pondering. P.S. They financed everything, I didn't have to pay a cent up front. Seems pretty dangerous for someone that doesn't practice delayed gratification... I wish I'd thought to put the max on a rewards credit card but I forgot about t...

You don't get all the rebates if you take the 0% financing
I just bought a new Ford truck today assuming I'd get all of the rebates and 0% financing but found out I'd loose a $1500 rebate if I took the 0%. I took the rebate. I haven't seen the numbers yet but the salesperson said she thought the rate would be about 5.5% (I'm guessing the duration is 60 months but it could be 72), I haven't talked to the finance mgr yet to get the exact numbers, that's tomorrow. I was thinking I'd take a 0% loan and keep investing the money but now, to get the deal done, I have a "less than 0% loan" which would cost me almost $5700 in interest on a $39000 loan. That's not going to happen. I've always paid cash for cars but was (incorrectly) thinking I might start tapping into my retirement savings (I'm 63 ...

I can’t contact former employer Re how long long term disability will last. Not exactly a friendly departure. My opinion is an all in one fund is fine until you start having taxable investments then the 3 fund shines because you can put stocks in either Total Stock or Total International Stock (bonds in taxable accounts are tax inefficient). As I age and have spent down my taxable investments it will be straight to an all in one for simplicity.

Re: Flooring: Hard wood vs Ceramic Tile that looks like wood
Thanks everyone who responded. I appreciate everyone's experience and shared opinions. For those that have engineered wood, has anyone had damage to it via water left unwipped or scuffing that irritated you and required repair? How hard or bad was the repair? I laid some Bruce engineered out flooring in our hallway (glue down). We have a slab and because of moisture the opposing layers help keep the expansion/contraction in check. I found the thickest surface with real wood ply under it so I think it was good quality. I immediately scratched/dented it with the pine pull down stairs, not a happy camper. After that it held up pretty good with small dogs sliding across it and all the other abuses a floor takes. Now when I shop for engineered ...

Our wood look tile doesn't look like wood, it's kind of it's own look and it's pretty darn nice! Yes, the epoxy grout is the way to go in my book (never needs sealing).ThatGuy wrote: ↑Thu Jul 26, 2018 12:29 pm Ceramic that looks like wood... doesn't really look like wood. You can tell it's printed, and the grout lines are a dead giveaway.
That said, it's not bad looking tile. Do it because tile fits your lifestyle and you like the colors, not because you think it passes for wood. And if you go with tile, use epoxy grout.

I just recently spilled a large glass of ice water on the keyboard of my zenbook ux305f (13" 2.6 lbs) and needed to replace it. It was a core M processor/8GB/256SSD. I was very happy with it except the sound was not very loud. I always said when I upgrade the only thing I'd change was the sound volume. Well, I started looking at competitors and came to the same conclusion as I did the time before, the 13" zenbook had everything I needed. I toyed with buying an acer with a 7th gen i7 but since I couldn't try one out I decided to go with what I know and got the 8th gen core i5/8gb/256SSD. I paid $749 at amazon. I couldn't find a ultra light notebook with those specs for $650. Things you'll want to be aware of the ux330u: Screen is n...

Take a look at POR-15. If you get any loose stuff off it will definately stick to rust and protect it. It can be painted over but within a certain time period and only with certain paints so not sure your enamal repair kit is compatable. Just an idea to look into. You know what they say, "rust never sleeps" so you may be fighting a rear guard action on this one. Good luck!

Thank you all for your help. Yesterday I found an old-school HVAC repair guy who was magically able to fix my old system, at least temporarily. He agrees that it is on its last legs, but it should get me through this summer season and into the fall. He recommended replacing the unit with another comparable unit -- straight AC with heat strips -- and said the 30 amp breaker I have will be sufficient if I go with a smaller heat strip. He quoted a price of $3200 for an Ameristar system, which he said was manufactured by Trane. I'm unfamiliar with the brand. If anyone has had experiences with it, good or bad, I'd love to hear from you. I do a lot of DIY and decided to learn how to diagnose and fix simple things in my HVAC (not so much a money ...

Besides sitting down and doing the hard work of trying to figure out what is best for you don't forget about unknowns like one of you outliving the other by many years and paying taxes as a single person. My opinion is I don't know what taxes will do in the future but when/if we are both pulling our pensions and SS and RMDs it probably makes sense to do some Roth conversions.

For those who have used Swappa, what condition of phone did you buy? There seems to be lots of good deals there, but most phones are listed in fair condition. I bought two phones from Swappa, one over 3 years ago and the other a few months ago. I believe both were listed as good condition. The first was a iphone 5c and back then sellers had good close up pictures with the correct lighting so you could see the condition of the screen/corners/back of the phone, it literally looked like new when it arrived. The second an iphone 6plus only had the "stock" pictures you see of Swappa so you could tell the screen wasn't broken but maybe not be able to see small scratches. The phone was in almost new condition. I suspect the fair conditi...

If the placebo effect works for a patient, doesn't bankrupt them and doesnt cost a lot, doesnt lead to other things- predatory practices etc, and doesnt cause harm then I'm all for it. Its one thing to be dismissive online and its another thing to see a living breathing human being swear by something that we think is placebo effect when everything else that supposedly has real efficacy fails them and they are still in pain or upset. It helped them rule out some houses so they didn't waste time when they came to look in person. It also helped that they were from this area and knew what neighborhoods they were interested in. I like classic old solid wood pieces because it's a lot lighter than "particle board" stuff, holds up for a lifetime and can be refinished/repaired. We frequented antique stores (not fancy ones) and found everything we needed. You have to learn a bit about how good furniture is made and how to spot poor construction or materials but we enjoyed the adventure.

Everyone always says replace the anode, but if your water heater anode has never been replaced and it's more than 5 years old I'd say the chances of you being able to get the anode rod to break free with a wrench and come out are slim. You can watch some YouTube videos of plumbers with 5 foot long breaker bars and the things don't budge. There is a chance you will damage the straps or piping holding the water heater in place as it will start to spin when trying to get the anode out. I'd say don't touch it. After reading all of the anode replacement info on the internet when I replaced my WH I tried to take the anode out of the old one (I think 10-12 years old). After trying a socket wrench, I upped the ante to a breaker bar with a long pie...

I need some advice with yet another consumer issue. I bought a brand new HVAC system almost exactly 1 year ago from an HVAC company in my area. They installed the system and removed the old system. It worked great through last Summer and Winter, and so far this Spring. I replace the filter every month or so. Then, yesterday, the AC seemed to be fine through the day (it was 92 degrees) until the evening. I noticed the house was getting warm and the system sounded loud outside my window. I checked the outside unit to see if it was just rattling or something. The HVAC fan was running inside. Long story short, the HVAC guy tells me it's my fault because I ran the system too hard and it froze. I don't believe this, as my thermostat is set for 7...

Making financial literacy courses part of compulsory education would be a benefit to society. But changing that curriculum is a pretty high hurdle - there is a large amount of inertia and many competing topics. Another path is through self education. This is easier but still a pretty high hurdle. Financially illiterate or uninterested people tend to follow the herd or stick their head in the sand. I don't know how to convince them that financial literacy is important.

My son's bedroom is above our garage. His room has always been temperamental when it comes to heating/cooling. At first, I thought it was garage below....because the garage door is not insulated, so it get's fairly cold in the winter and warm in the summer. We live in the south. We had a plumbing leak last summer and I cut a huge 2' x 2' hole in the garage ceiling to check where the leak was. Fixed it, but left the hole. Our garage ceiling was insulated with batt insulation. The bedroom is more like a "bonus room," in today's terms, but in 1996...it's a bedroom. That being said.... I think the main reason for the hvac issues is because his room has vaulted ceilings and no true attic space above his room. So you're looking at the ...

Re: Employer-subsidized retiree health insurance questions
My fortune 500 had retiree health care but froze the amount they paid into it back in 1989. I retired in 2013 at age 58 and as part of a voluntary buyout offer we were given 25k for healthcare expenses (including paying premiums). I calculated it would cover me until almost medicare age but with the rising cost of healthcare, and more people retiring from the company the 25k was gone in about 2-1/2 years. The premiums went from about 450/mo to well over 850 by the time the till was empty. I hear it is over $1100/mo now. No matter, my wife is still working at the company and we will pay about $300/mo until I reach medicare age. I would say you have a very nice but unique benefit from a private corporation. As mentioned above the value is the...

Re: June in Paris: What to (or not to) wear, see and do?
My experience in Paris was everyone who could speak English did from the get-go - somehow they just know. I don't think it was the clothes that gave me away but I do sometimes notice a style difference between US and European clothing. If that what tips them off I'd guess the only way you might fool them is by buying some clothes in Paris. They also started with English with my wife and she is Greek!

Re: New roof - does this ridge vent look right?
I've installed several roofs myself (rent houses) with ridge vents. While unsightly, I do not see any reason for the vent not to function properly. It appears the fasteners were overdriven. I would think it an easy fix for the roofer. I am not sure why they would not address it. On second look of the pictures it might be the vents (thin plastic) were deformed when installed. In that case the heat from the sum might flatten them some. It still looks like sloppy work. I just installed one last week. Mine was a GAF Cobra Rigid Vent 3, looks like the one pictured in SandTrap's pic with the vent sticks out about 1/2" beyond the ridge shingle. It looks like over nailing which they warn you against in the installation instructions. The rigid...

Re: Advice for assisting 18 year old son after high school
Thanks to all for the first round of suggestions. We will certainly be the backstop for any major expenses (i.e. car repairs, etc...) for a while and will provide have health insurance until he gets his own. Yes, I think we might have the aunt and uncle perhaps control some of the money for clothes and the like after we get him a few initial outfits that are appropriate. And no, no Marines/military for him. That is not his personality. Not off the table if he so chooses, but I doubt it And we all go into this knowing he might only last a few weeks. And that's fine. We still love him, obviously, and will welcome him home if it doesn't work out. And college is still on the table. We have given him many outs to change is mind but I think he w...

Re: Brick pavers on the edge of my porch are already falling off
I don't know about the horizontal pavers, but is it possible to adhere unsupported vertical pavers by any method? Doesn't masonry depend on physical support of stone under stone rather than adhesion to support the weight of a stone? Applying the right glue and following the manufacturer's recommendation can create a bond stronger than even concrete or pavers. But you would need to place some type of temporary support (2×4s) under the stones while the glue is curing. Don't put any load on it while it's curing. TravelforFun I agree. They put tiles in ceilings of steam rooms and such and once the thinset drys it's permanent. Modern adhesives usually have a bond that's stronger than the material they are attached too. Also agree the pavers sho...

Re: Air Conditioner Questions: Stop Leak & Qualified Technician
I started watching HVAC repair guys on youtube because I wanted to be able to diagnose and fix a few simple problems (like replacing the capacitor). It's been a while and I forget quick but it's pretty common for customers to want to just add gas. I don't recall any of them adding a stop leak, in fact I think one or two didn't recommend it and I think it was because it can cause the compressor to fail. I seem to remember them adding a 1-1.5 pounds and making comments that 1.5 was kind of a lot. I think it depends on how quick your loosing gas and how much the gas you need costs per pound (the old stuff is getting expensive). Of course this isn't doing the ozone layer any favors but there aren't any regulations on small residential units lik...

Re: Why Edward Jones?
EJ advisors can’t be generalized just like other firms. Each advisor is their own person. I don’t fit into any category mentioned above - and I don’t have sales as a background. I left one career for another and just came here to read about the DIY to see if they were anything like me before I decided to make a career of it. There are EJ advisors I’d never do business with, but others I would. It’s really about the relationship and I understand DIYers have no need, but dang some of the comments overgeneralize. I hope I’m professional and not “professional.” I guess I asked for it to read this one ;) I would like to know what the added value needs to be? Isn’t value subjective? When you add the fees and lost opportunity due to not investing...

Re: Anyone Using Food Sealing Vacuums (eg FoodSaver)?
One Christmas I got one for my wife (she actually considers kitchen items as gifts). We had discussed the vacuum sealer and she wasn't interested. Now she says it's the second most used small appliance in the kitchen after the coffee maker. She uses it to make single servings after cooking large portions, to store leftovers, transparent so you can see what's in there, no spills, can fill the freezer compactly and its great for sealing bags of chips and such. We buy rolls so we can make custom length bags (cheaper) and we usually reuse bags so it really cuts down on the waste.

Re: Home Depot's Life Proof Rigid Core Vinyl Flooring
I've never used HD installers but from the tile experts forum I've frequented for years the good ones say they have more work than they can take on so why give HD a cut of their profit. On the other hand the company I use for garage door installations, very good, said they do all of the HD installs in the area. Maybe it depends on the trade?

Re: Home Loan from Parents
Can a home loan from financially secure parents to financially secure son/daughter be mutually beneficial? It worked for us. At the time banks were charging 11% and CD's were paying 7% or something like that, and the IRS minimum split the difference at 8% or so, so doing that was a win-win. We put about 50% down, and filed formal mortgage paperwork so everyone was protected (my parents if we defaulted, or my siblings if my parents died young, etc). I can't say it's right for every, or even many, families, but it worked out fine for us. Keeping the extra interest in the family made a lot of sense to all of us. Worked for us too. Our landlord died and his beneficiaries offered us a great deal on the house. Not even considering buying but it ...

Re: Attic HVAC: fan doesn't work in AUTO mode and AC on
I wouldn't bother removing that panel, I think all that's in there is the evaporator coil. I'd basically "follow the wires". Try to follow each wire to see where it goes. Depending on age there may not be a complete "board" per say, maybe just some relay's and other electronics. If you look at any thermostat install manual you can identify what each wire does and then use a jumper wire to mimic what the thermostat would do. One of the terminals is power, you just jump the power to the correct terminal. It's only 24V so it won't shock you (unless you are standing barefoot outside at the compressor and grab the thermostat wire, ask me how I know). I'd start with the thermostat for all the reasons given above but I'm not ho...

Re: Stopping unwanted "junk" newspaper
Same thing happened here, they just stopped but I do see some from time to time in other neighbors driveways so I'm not sure what's going on. Funny thing is I switched from a propane grill to a charcoal grill and I could really use some newsprint to light the chimney.
