Re: Where to put RMDs in budget?

I reached the exalted "rmd age" this year. I am a retired teacher in Texas and, though my wife and I can live off my trs pension ,we get no cost of living adjustment as does social security. I, therefore, use my RMD'S to offset any inflation. I would like to move the money into Roth's but being among the poorer Bogleheads, I need all the money I can get. :happy

Re: Do you work part time in retirement?

If you are working part time, share what you do, the advantages and disadvantages of working, the tax treatment of your paycheck, and when you started working. I'm a teacher and a few years to retirement and I'd like to substitute teach. I'm hoping to set it up as a small business and looking to gain ideas around possible tax benefits of mileage, home office expenses and education classes I might need to stay current. Julieta, I too am a retired teacher. I have been substitute teaching for the past three years and I find the job much less stressful than regular teaching; there are no papers to grade, no faculty metings, no parent conferences, and no ards, so at the end of the day I just wave "adios" pick up my book and head home....

Lincoln's Boys by Joshua Zeitz. The book is not about Lincoln's three biological sons, but John Nicolay and John Hay who served as Lincoln's private secretaries during his presidency and to whom President Lincoln often referred to as " my boys". The book covers not only the years with Lincoln but the life of Hay and Nicolay after Lincoln's assassination ,including their collaboration on a biography of Lincoln that still must be taken into consideration by anyone considering writing about Lincoln. Ironically Hay became William McKinley's secretary of state and was present at President McKinley's assassination. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War or just likes good...

I recently used Truecar service to buy a Honda CR-v. They sent me a list of salesman at differnt dealers who worked with Truecar and I negotiated with them for the best price. As far as I can tell from my research online ,the final deal I got was very good. So I would certainly say Truecar worked for me. Of course the salesman may still be laughing at the naive guy who bought the CR-v . Thanks for reading.

Mr. Churchill's profession by Peter Clarke. The author says that Churchill's great success as a statesman have often disguised the fact that his profession was writing. Mr Clarke details that most of the money Churchill made to support himself and his family came from his writing. He particularly concentrates on Churchill's masterpiece: The History of the English Speaking People.. Mr. Clarke slyly points out also that Sir Winston spent about 6 per cent of his income on liquor. Happy reading to all.

Greetings to all you Bogeheads and thanks for all the great information through the years. This is my situation. In 2009 we adopted my wife's nephew in the Philippines and after living with him the last three years in the Philippines, he now has a U.S visa and we are back in the U.S. I called TRS today, thinking we could add him to our health insurance, and they told me we could not add him because he could only have been added within 30 days of our official adoption, which, as noted above ,was four years ago. Though he is only 17 and healthy, we do not want him to be without health insurance. I went online to EHEALTH and the...

After 3 years with the 24TH Infantry in Germany I returned to Waco Tx. and attended college and graduate school. After that I moved to Houston where I spent the next 40 years. I always found real benefit in staying in one job(school in my case as i was a teacher, guidance counselor). The advantages of staying a long time in one school(job) were I had learned my job well and felt confident I was performing a real service, a good relationship ,confidence and trust had developed with my colleagues, and liking your boss(principal) was a huge factor. However as I learned, the boss could always retire, move on, or be replaced and that could sometimes change the entire culture. Good luck with your decision.

In one of the hail storms here in the Houston area, I noticed some damage to my tin roof on my small patio. This leads me to wonder if there might not have also been damage to my larger roof. IO can't see any but then again I'm not a professional. My question is should I ask my insurance company to send out an appraiser to look at the roof or would I be wiser to ask a roofing company to come out first. My thought is that it would be in the best interest of my insurance company to tell me that my roof is fine and the roofing company to tell me it needs a new roof. Hopefully I'll just get the truth. Thanks in advance for you wisdom and knowledge.

I just finished the third volume of [u]The Last Lion[u] . This is the final volume of William Manchester's wonderful life of Winston Churchill. Mr. Manchester died before he had the chance to finish the last book, but before his death, he asked the historian Paul Reid to finish the final volume. This book is not up to the standards of the first two volumes in my opinion but still an exceptional read. I highly recommend all three volumes. How could one go wrong in reading a biography of perhaps the greatest statesman in the history of the English Speaking People by one of America's greatest historians. Thanks for reading this.

happili virus

Help I'm being kidnapped. :happy Actually my Google and Yahoo search are being kidnapped. Whenever I try to search from Yahoo or Google my search is kidnapped and taken to a site called happili. I know this is not an investment question but I visit this site enough to know many of you are immensely informed on computers and are kind enough to share your knowledge. So here are my questions . Have any of you had this virus and what can I do to remove it? Thanks in advance.
