Re: Continuing Care facilities

As a follow up to my prior posts about living in a CCRC. A couple of weeks ago, my wife developed a severe pain in her left side in the middle of the night. After a while, she finally decided to call the on-duty nurse and she checked her out, and said she had a breathing disorder and sent her to the ER. She was diagnosed with an infection around the lung and required next day surgery. She made it through surgery and a few days later, she was to be released to nursing care, which we have in our complex. On the way out, they said she had covid. So, we went to Nursing section, for evaluation and continued medical care and an overnight stay with strict covid protocol and were released to independent living with several days quarantine. During t...

Re: Continuing Care facilities

We moved into a CCRC several years ago to be sure my wife had care someday for her declining health issues. We were comfortable with this decision since we would be taken care of foe the rest of our lives. We would not have to worry about getting care in our home and managing all that comes with it. We went through this with my In-laws. Now, I have been diagnosed with have a serious progressive disease that will eventually require assisted living, nursing care and hospice. This was out of the blue and a complete shock. I have free transportation into a big city for appointments. My wife and I would not drive there now there and someday will not be able to. So, we are thankful we will never have to worry about all the "what ifs" an...

Re: Ten Years In Cash, Everything Else in the Market

I have 1 year in taxable money market at over4% and 10 years in a bond ladder in Treasuries, CD's. Agencies and some corporates. Coupon rate 4%. Age is 79 and using it for RMDs. 40% equities. Almost all funds are tax deferred. As the bonds mature each year and are used for RMDs my stock allocation will climb to 100% at age 89. So, I guess I will have to move equites to fixed income during this period. If things go right, the 40% equites will at least double, and I will use them for RMD's by selling them and converting to fixed income or a combination of this. Health outlook is fair, so I think we will be ok. All good though, just glad we do not to have to worry about financial issue as well as health issues. Very fortunate to be in a great ...

Re: IRS audit 2020 - How to Respond

The 2020 return was filed by me, apparently incorrectly.
I did my 2021 return and have not heard anything back.
The 2022 was done by a CPA.
At my age, I realized it was time to stop doing this myself.
He is also helping with the 2020 problem.

I came to this decision reluctantly, since I enjoyed doing my taxes.

At least, I realized it and took action. I cannot deal with the IRS.

Everything else is done by me so far.
I enjoy investing my funds and so far, missed the big downturn in 2022 (down 4%) and am up 2% this year with 36% equities.

Re: IRS audit 2020 - How to Respond

Similar situation Received notice in January 2023 that they had added all of the mutual fund sales to my taxable income for 2020, based on what Vanguard sent them. They ignored or did not have the costs of the funds sold. So, it was about $50,000 more income and about $11,000 in taxes, penalties and interest. My accountant sent my copy of the 1099 showing the sales and also the cost of the sales. No tax is due. They gave me about 2 or 3 weeks to respond. I got a response from them a few weeks later and they said they would need 90 days to check it out and get back to me. I am not filing my2022 return which has a few thousand dollar refund due to me. I am afraid this will get all messed up and my refund may be lost in the mill for a long tim...

Agree,
Multiple grab bars, shower seat with handheld shower head. And we use a Rubbermaid shower mat. Many suction cups and will not move. We take it up each night rinse it and let it drain. We have had mold grow on the bottom, and putting it in the washer helps, but sometimes leaves a mold stain on bottom of mat. I don't care, but DW does noy like it.
They are in different sizes and can be easily cut to shorten if needed.

It appears that the first page that comes up for this fund is the 10/31 rate of 2.74%.
But if you click on the performance tab it shows the 7-day rate at 3.31% as 11/11.
I think it is confusing that the first tab does not show the current rate.
Not good for them.

After 25 years, I am in the process of moving my funds from Vanguard to Fidelity. I did an account online today by myself, but will need a person to walk me through transferring other accounts, joint, wife's IRA,the bonus code to get the transfer bonus.

One great feature Fidelity has is the ability to lock down my accounts. That way no one can transfer out my funds. It does not affect RMD's and check writing. Easy to turn on and off.

TURBOTAX says efile rejected my 2021 return

I tried to efile my 2021 return a few days ago and I go a message that says the IRS rejected my return. The reason was the AGI did not match last year. I recently got a notice from the IRS that they had a credit on my account and no record of what it was for. It was the payment sent with my 2020 return last January that I filed by mail in January 2021. So I sent them a copy of my 2020 return at the end of December 2021 in response to this request. Could it be that since they have no record of my AGI because they did not process my return, that is the reason my 2021 return was rejected a few days ago. There is no AGI to compare to. When you efile they ask for last year's AGI. So, do I wait to efile as late as April 2022, or just send in my p...

I live in a CCRC which has independent living, assisted living and nursing care.
We receive a statement each year that gives us the amount for tax deduction. It is based on the estimated amount of our yearly expense that is prepaying our future nursing care.
It is about 35% of our monthly fee.
When we moved in, we got a big tax deduction also based on the entry fee, which was about $36,000 per person for that year.
I don't know if assisted living expenses are deductible as medical expenses.

This is just what I know.

Re: Any reason for 5% cash in a long-term portfolio?

If a person is retired, and subscribes to the age in bond minus 10% then a 75 year old has 65% in bonds, 35% equities. Even if I go to 45% equities, that is still a lot of money earning next to nothing or losing value.
That is a lot of money to have in anything other than s.t. bond funds if you expect rates to go up.
No matter how many years it is in expenses, it is surely a lot of money sitting on the sidelines.
As I look at it, , s.t. bonds are the same as cash or close to is.
So a lot of us retirees must have way more than 5% cash or s.t. bonds.
Am i wrong here.

TT said to split out the Distributions so that the reversed RMD amount (smaller) was entered as one 1099R in TT and the remailing larger amount (Roth rollover ) was entered on another1099R. Well,
I pulled down the 1099R from the Vanguard Website and filled out the Turbo Tax input form for the 1099.
I must be doing something wrong because line 4a and 4b show the entire amount as taxable.

If you remember, I took advantage of the option to reverse the RMD that I had received well within the time frame. I put it back into the Traditional IRA that it came from.

I do not see where TT is asking about a reversal of the RMD.

Am I missing something on the TT input form?

Appreciate your help since this is amounting to a large tax bill at this point. The reversal is not supposed to be taxable

Thanks
