There is no right or wrong answer here. It's what you feel comfortable with. A year is about the most I have kept in checking in the past, but your plan sounds good.

+1. We also keep between 3-6 months in checking that earns 3.00% and the rest in a higher yielding MMF.

Re: Computer Expertise Needed

Thanks for all the info. At this point the biggest issue is when clicking on any desktop shortcut icon, it takes 5 to 7 seconds to go to the site. Once there, it seems to bring up quickly what I request on Edge, as an example. It isn't the internet connection or speed because my other pc connects immediately. it could still be a network issue, just not the physical one. For example, if you are using wireless you could be sitting in a bad stop. You network driver could be not working properly (I had an incident where after a windows update the device driver, the network speed dropped to a really low speed). One way to test this is to run a browser on your computer and your wifes computer and then go to https://www.speedtest.net/ and run a s...

At your age you are doing great. Invest as much as you can as early as you can (this is the key) so that time can work for you, but do make sure you always have an emergency fund and also enjoy life i.e. don't deprive yourself of some things. You're on your way. Best wishes, Enad

My 8th grader is very interested in tennis. He takes part in local competitions and wants more and more of playing and competing. He is reasonably good in academics and grades. We parents (and he too) most certainly want him to go to a good college after high school. How can we parents support his tennis passion along with his studies at high school and going on to college? Can a tennis pathway help to get admission in an impacted major like Engineering? Do high school tennis players get "recruited" by college coaches to be on their team, thus getting admitted to the college? This is interesting. Also interesting is that a 5 second delay rather than 1 second should be an issue for a rather basic pc user such as myself! For someone trying to get work done, sure. Even so, assuming it is a machine problem, is there any remedy, such as a new SSD and fresh OS install? Or should I not bother? New Vanguard 3 fund participant. I am almost 79, wife is 76. Our SS, pension, IRA and VA disability income provides for pretty much all of our needs. The taxable invested portion is a 35/60/5 allocation (equity, bond, cash). Currently in VTSAX, VTIAX and VBTLX. Our current withdrawals from this account will be fully discretionary - travel, major purchase, home improvement. I fully understand the stock portions of the portfolio. My question has to do with the VBTLX portion. Is it as wise a place to be for our situation, or would a shorter duration bond fund or money market or individual treasuries be better. The volatility in today’s world is unsettling to me. Just stay the course (even though our course is of relatively short duration)? Th...

As I posted earlier, our hot water heater is ready for replacement. I also like hot baths with lots of hot water. Thinking about a tankless hot water heater. Should I spring for one? The one that I saw was 11gpm, natural gas powered, and supposedly good for 2-4 showers at once. Our family never has that many showers, but my baths do use a large number of gallons. Any thougths? If you are going to do it, the best time is before you have a problem with yours in case you have other considerations to make. My neighbor put one in just before he sold his house and he had to change the gas line. When we did ours we opted to go with a traditional water heater with an automatic flue damper vs. a flap and we went with a titanium powered anode in-lie...

We have sunscreens that we added to our windows which are 80% and 90% blocking and they will reduce the amount of heat on the windows. We also have plated shades on the inside and some windows have dual pleated shades. They help mostly with light. We have a roller between the shades and the glass in some rooms which cut down on both heat and light if we want to darken a particular room of the house that is in full sun. But in the end we installed roller shades on several windows and removed the sun screens on them since the earliest you can block the heat the better chance you will have. We also have low E dual pane windows but we live in the desert where the temps can be in the mid 120's in the summer/fall and in the low teens in the winte...

Have you considered a snail shower that doesn't rely on a door or shower curtains? We fitted one into a 54x48" area for the shower portion and have another 54x36 as the walk-in portion. We used real glass block on the pony walls (the first one for the shower is needed), the 2nd one for the walk in area is optional. We also installed a vertical grab bar that has a slider that lets us adjust the height of the shower head which can also be used as a hand shower. No seat, but there are 2 corner shelves and a built-in for shampoo/soap. The walls are cultured marble and are easy to clean (wipe after each use). We used 1/2-inch travertine tiles and the grout presents enough grip to not fall. Once every 5 years or so, I mix up some grout and r...

We mail our returns every year. When we had W-2's we attached the one for Federal and for state to the appropriate returns with a small piece of scotch tape as they don't like staples or paper clips and the tape comes off easy enough. If you use TurboTax you can cut out your return address and the mailing address and affix them to the envelope. We take them to the counter and watch them hand cancel the envelopes and then ask to take a picture of the envelope with the hand cancellation (our proof of mailing). Never filed an electronic return and never will. This year it took 18 days to get the state refund and 21 days to get the federal refund.

When I do this kind of work, I replace other things that I have to remove or are easily accessible once I decide to change the belt. You don't have to but it doesn't hurt. What happens if many or nearly all of the tiles arrived broken? Is making a round-trip by car something that you can do, and even then you'll need to make sure you can secure the tiles in such a way that they don't break on you. I once transported 4 boxes of 20x20 tiles across town and had several broken tiles. Later I used lots of moving blankets to do the same and no broken tiles. So even if someone can place them on a pallet and shrink wrap them what happens if you get broken tiles?

The belt should be replaced due to age, as rubber ages whether in use or not and may age faster in certain conditions. The pulleys/tensioners should be examined but are unlikely to have to be replaced. The water pump is more based on hours of use/mileage and doesn't need to be replaced with that mileage

We've taken both our Teslas with friends on 1500+ mile road trips as it was much preferred over driving ICE. Curious. Why did you prefer the Tesla over ICE on 1500+ mile road trips? Surely the time it takes to charge is longer vs. filling up at a gas station I've had a Tesla since 2016. In that time period I've had two cases where charging became an issue. One was a trip to the mountains. There were no superchargers up there. Or even what is called Level 2 chargers (30 miles per hour of charging), which are available at some hotels. I had to charge from a 120V power source. At that rate I get about 3 miles of driving for each 1 hour of charging. So, overnight I was able to add about 30-40 miles to my range. The other case was an area well ...

Old Maytag washers built before 1990 are great especially the no frills bottom of the barrel type that are purely electro-mechanical in nature. They can be picked up super cheap on Craigslist and can be serviced by Maytag immediately and last a very long time. Ours is a 1986 model, top loader with 1 dial that has 3 different cycles: Regular, Permanent Press, Delicate. There are 3 buttons for the type of water used to wash/rinse: Hot/Cold, Warm/Cold, Cold/Cold and a slider to set the water level.

Up until 10 years ago Speed Queen still made a consumer version of a purely electro-mechanical model used by coin-up laundromats but they pulled the plug on that model.

Re: S&P 500 concentration risk: Should we be worried?

The composition of the fund is always changing and the top 10 companies are also changing. I don't pay attention to it and am not troubled by it. I've been in an S&P500 fund for more than 40 years. I think it was Jason Zweig who said "I don't know, I don't care"

Re: IRS Owes Me $7 Refund From 2020

I used to set it up so the IRS owes me about $25 - $50, but now set it up so that I owe them that amount and pay it via EFTPS

How many folks who have an EV have it as their sole vehicle and no ICE vehicle?

Re: dell laptop battery replacement, oem vs non-oem?

and like I said, my main concern is not the cost of the battery. and no, it wasn't until I read twh's post and spent some time researching his statements that I made a decision. anyhow, thanks for your time, I think I have all the data I need now for a decision. be careful. Original Dell batteries have been known to cause explosions You can check this site to see laptop battery recalls from just about every manufacturer (and these are "name" brand"): https://www.cpsc.gov/search?search_api_fulltext=laptop+battery The point I am trying to convey is that no manufacturer of batteries is immune from a recall. Mistakes happen all the time, and hopefully no one gets hurt by them. It's just an assumption to think that name brand man...

Discover or Chase Amazon Visa are two good cards.

Re: Do I have to get a hybrid?

Hybrids are a good way to get into an EV as you have the best of both worlds. If they are still available, our next cars will be hybrids.

Re: Chase Freedom Card Upgrade

I had one till 4 months ago and closed it out, having had it for a long time, but still have several cards even older, so it did not hurt my credit history. The nice thing that Chase let me do is transfer my credit limits among the different cards and having it on the Chase Amazon Visa works out the best since the rewards strategy on that card is awesome

Re: dell laptop battery replacement, oem vs non-oem?

If the risk was just the cost of the battery, an ebay/amazon battery would be a no-brainer. But people have experienced first and 2nd degree burns and fire damage to their home. not sure what I'll do, I'll probably go for a $70-$90 battery from a reputable retailer. Smoke alarms are one of many devices that use a 9V battery and improperly stored batteries can cause a house to burn down (even if they are name brand batteries). See this article Here's another article: https://www.bwfiresecurity.com/single-post/can-nine-volt-batteries-cause-house-fire Like I said if you by a name brand or 3rd party battery from eBay or Amazon you'll have ample time to test the battery and go through a return process. If you buy on Amazon, at least make sure t...

Re: dell laptop battery replacement, oem vs non-oem?

I have purchased Dell batteries and keyboards from eBay (mostly) and Amazon over the last 15 years and never had an issue and for far less money than the Dell price (when it was available from Dell). I see the additional cost of a dell replacement battery as insurance. From a probability pov, it's unlikely an ebay/amazon battery explodes but if it does, I want to hold someone's feet to the fire for damages. And because I can hold dell responsible, there's a smaller likelihood the batteries they sell will explode. of course, we all have different views of risk and the roi of insurance leading to different decisions. FWIW, one of the Dell replacement batteries purchased on eBay is 10 years old now, one is 7 years and the other is 5 years and...

Our insurance company let us have glass coverage + liability coverage on very old cars. It's my understanding that some states my require personal injury protection as well (not ours)
