Re: Best place to buy a refurbished laptop?

For a MacBook you really don’t want anything older than an M1 processors. Anything with an intel chip is rapidly being phased out of support and it will not last as long.

Walmart has been selling the base model M1 air for $699. Hard to beat for a MacBook.

Depending on what she needs to run, nice Chromebooks are $300 and are often the preferred choice for elementary and middle schools.

The Asus Zenfone 10 is about the same width as an iPhone 13 mini but a half inch taller. I think it is the smallest current model regular (non-folding) Android you can get in USA.

Sadly, hardly anyone buys the smaller phones so they are getting cancelled by phone makers. The 13 mini was only 3% of iPhone sales for that generation.

Re: TSP loans don't seem like that bad of an idea

I borrowed from my retirement. Easy and low interest I thought. But then we had 3 very good years in the market. The $18k I borrowed would have turned into $25k had I not borrowed. And then right as I paid it off, market dropped a lot. So my actual loan cost was a lot more expensive than the 5% I paid to myself. Compounding out that could be $50 or $100k over time. Of course had market dropped big while my loan was out, I’d be saying how much it saved me in losses. I have heard of a strategy to mitigate by replacing bonds with your 401k loan. But I was all stock at the time anyway. In general it’s probably better to leave retirement money alone until retirement, but every circumstance is different. In this case I had a 7% consumer loan alte...

Re: With Schwab Robo advisor, can I select specific ETFs?

Wealthfront will let you pick a completely custom plan with TLH and it even shows which funds have TLH pairs and what they are. Just as an alternative to consider.

You could compare with Betterment by going here and looking at their fund options: https://www.wealthfront.com/explore

And as an example, AVEM - Avantis Emerging Markets. And they show it uses DFAE as a loss harvesting alternate: https://www.wealthfront.com/explore/83/avem

And then funds like ARKF will say not TLH alternate available: https://www.wealthfront.com/explore/78/arkf

I had a good experience with Wealthfront and they have very aggressive TLH. But I decided to go back to self manage. Transferring out was easy.

Re: Renting when you can afford to buy?

Do the math. With current rates and high housing costs in Seattle, you'd be paying $6000+ a month for a tiny "starter" home even with a sizeable down payment. It is way cheaper to rent in most markets right now thanks to the huge house price run up of the last 5-10 years.

20 years ago you could usually start off in a house for like 10-20% more than rent and then with equity and rent increases you'd be ahead of renting in 3-4 years. But now it might be decades.

I have a couple of large passive speakers from an old stereo system and was curious to try them out with the t.v. but of course it's not very straightforward as the speakers just have bare wires (two per speaker). So I am looking for a relatively inexpensive box that would input the optical audio out from the t.v. - that's the only option - and output to the speaker wires but have not been successful. I say inexpensive as I'm not sure how it would all work out. Any recommendations?
That’s called a receiver or amplifier. Common piece of stereo or home theater gear but not typically compact.

You’d probably be better off getting an inexpensive tv soundbar.

Re: Silly TLH games

The good news with total market and large cap funds is there are quite a few funds you can do this with. So you could easily loss harvest 5-10 times in a month without having a wash sale. You just have to make sure you're not harvesting with funds that track the same index, and keep a spreadsheet of the dates you harvested and which funds were bought and sold. Consult the spreadsheet every time you look to harvest again. If you do that you could end up with 5-10 funds per asset class in your portfolio eventually. That's a lot of complexity just to eke out a few more losses. This is the exact reason why I ditched my robo advisor when I had an opportunity. It started as a relatively simple 5 fund portfolio. But they would sometimes loss harv...

Sometime I even alternate between cashing out or reinvesting the dividends depending on what's going on that point. Just to illustrate what has been said above (numbers made up as an example)

Money you put in last year may have gone up 10%
Money you put in in January may have gone up 8% because it didn't have as long to grow
Money you put in in Feb may have gone up 4%
Money you put in 2 weeks ago, maybe 2%
Average those out and you made less than 10% overall.

In a declining or see-saw market this could also have left you with a higher return than the fund YTD.

So I place more weight on Morningstar's post mortem analysis, above, than yours. But you are correct that VIGI's cap gains are rare for any Vanguard ETF, and one wonders whether holding only about 300 foreign companies might lead to another bout of in-kind redemption melt-down in any future sell off. When you have a pure market cap fund, changing indexes doesn't involve many trades. Going from CRSP Large Cap to Dow Large cap might mean shaving a tenth a percent off a few of your bigger holdings or just waiting for some new money influx to rebalance. Market c...

All things equal, capital gains now is worse than capital gains later. And uncontrolled capital gain is worse than controlled capital gain.

Of course when using words like "always" in the thread title, things are not always equal. If a fund makes you well above market returns, it can still be a positive after capital gains.

But it really burned owners in Dec 2021, when it paid out $2.5904 in short term capital gains and $2.5913 in long term capital gains per share. According to Morningstar : Vanguard International Dividend Appreciation ETF VIGI, which carries a Morningstar Analyst Rating of Silver, expects to pay out a capital gains distribution of more than 6% of its NAV this year. This marks the fund’s first-ever such distribution since its 2016 inception. VIGI’s distribution is the result of above-normal turnover (partly spurred by post-pandemic dividend cuts among some of its holdings), the inability to send some emerging-markets stocks out the door via in-kind redemptions, and st...
