I would go 100% in stocks (Total Stock Market Index). At this point, there is not a large amount in there. Once you reach around 100K, maybe 80/20 and leave it there until retirement. When you hit retirement, stay at 60/40 or a Target Date or Lifestyle Fund.thatbrian wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2019 6:09 pm Newly minted Boglehead here. Just got converted today. Here's my issue: I am 54, have 10k in an IRA — that's it, unfortunately. So. . . I need to play catchup.
If I allocate 54% in bonds, I fear I'll never make any headway. If I don't, I fear I'll risk too much.
Do I do the book move, or do I allocate more like 80% in stocks?

I plan on working ten more years and I'm 60/40 and plan to stay there for life. The main thing is it helps me ignore the crazy market fluctuations and it still grows nicely when stocks rise. I hold the Vanguard Balanced Index Fund and it stays at a constant 60/40. IMHO investing doesn't get much better.

I have two. I never regretted either one of them. My first I got when I was 17 and my last I got when I was 45. I also had the one I got when I was 17 recolored. I'm 55 now and still no regrets. I think the people who have regrets get things that don't fit who they are any longer. I have a friend who had devils and skulls all over his arms when he was young and as an adult had them removed and the process was very painful. My two tattoos are still things I like so I still like seeing them. They are both Disney tattoos. One is the parrot from The Enchanted Tikki Room in Disney World and the other is Micky Mouse. I like listening to the Dave Ramsey show for all the success stories. I do also like Dave at times and if he likes managed funds, so be it. Where I take issue with Dave is when he becomes bully Dave. It is not all the time, but often enough to make me scratch my head. There are times Dave has really great wisdom and is pretty deep and thoughtful but when bully Dave arrives, he can be a real jerk.

I could be wrong (and please forgive me if I am) but I have your name pegged as one that posts emotionally during declines in the market price of equities. If this is correct, please, for your own sake, do not tinker and keep your AA. Overthinking, especially as someone visibly impacted during volatility, is a recipe for disaster. Of course do what you need to do to help you sleep at night but don’t constantly shift directions. Great advice. As someone who changed their AA more times than I care to admit because I was emotional and an overthinker, do yourself a favor, pick the proper AA for your risk tolerance and ignore everything else and that includes a limit on how many times you visit the Bogleheads. Full disclosure I have been at 60/...

My thoughts were always to hold a balance between stocks and bonds with an understanding that bonds would offer a smoother ride and stocks will give me enough growth to outpace inflation. I own one fund which is the Vanguard Balanced Index Fund and to help me stay the course, I asked Jack himself and Mel was kind enough to include it in the question and answer session at the 2017 BH conference. It starts at 59:02.

Re: Did you get spooked by the December 2018 fall and gave up on passive?
If you were 50/50 - you had a moderate but on the conservative side AA. Ignore the macro and focus on the micro. The micro are the underlying businesses you own in the total stock market. Over time they create value and that is all you need to know. Stop listening to all the experts and stick with a long term plan. If you got spooked at 50/50, try staying where you are and see how you feel when things get volatile again. Warren Buffett who is in favor of index funds with a high stock allocation for the know-nothing investor also has said not everyone is suited to own stocks at all. These decisions are not easy, but once you find your sweet spot (which may take some time), you can totally ignore what the market is doing and feel confident th...

I'm all in with the balanced index fund. It is all indexed, low cost and an excellent long-term track record. It's almost like the couch potato portfolio all in one fund. Its static AA of 60/40 is perfect for the moderate investor who wants returns and a smoother ride. John Bogle was recommending this fund for many years and he choose this for the money he gifted to his Grandchildren. When it comes to index funds or managed funds, I rather be in index funds, even if the managed funds are low cost from Vanguard.

My wife is one of four (all close in age). She always said the best times of her life was when the lived in a small Brooklyn Apartment. She doesn't have the same memories when they moved to a big home. She still misses that tiny apartment.
The size of the home is not what matters to kids, it's how functional or dysfunctional the home is and if love is the major factor in said home, so do what works for your income and you will have less stress.

Always choose simplicity. Jack has taught this his entire life, don't let him down. He devoted his life up until his last days with his message so all our lives could be easier not harder when it comes to investing.
I for one might be one of those who took it to the extreme, but it is what keeps me staying the course. I have my entire portfolio in one fund. The Vanguard Balanced Index Fund. Jack also loved this fund and he directly answered my question at the second to last BH meeting. He said nothing is wrong with having everything in that fund. That's all I needed to hear to stay the course.
When it comes to investing, complexity is not the answer.

Re: Tributes to Jack Bogle
His quotes are so well know, like Stay the Course and Press on Regardless. Those two are my personal favorites. Below is what I read when I feel my self straying from said course. The simplest of all approaches is to invest solely in a single balanced market index fund -- just one fund. And it works. Such a fund offers a broadly diversified middle-of-the-road investment program for a typical conservative investor who is investing about 60 percent of assets in stocks and 40 percent in bonds. This portfolio is entirely "indexed" - that is, its stocks and bonds are not actively managed, but simply represent a broad cross-section of the entire U.S. stock and bond market. Over the past half-century, such a fund would have captured 98 p...

I'm reluctant to name the school in this post (but will disclose in a direct message). Not sure why, just my instinct. I didn't read the other replies yet, but adding 10% in bonds will not be a deal breaker and maybe help you sleep better. After 25 years of investing for retirement, it took me a long time to stop second guessing myself and pick an AA and stay with it. For what it's worth John Bogle has said never all in or all out of the market. So again, at your age having 100% or 90% in bonds is reasonable, but only you know how you react when we have extreme volatility or when the market is doing great and greed might set in. Good Luck! I'm 53 turning 54 in June and I have been holding the Vanguard Balanced Index Fund and I finally found my sweet spot where I don't think about the market or look at my portfolio. I wish you the same! If you are inclined to be 100% stocks the market dropping should not matter. Having said that, there are some people who should not invest in stocks because they can't handle the volatility. However, if you are a real investor and don't care about what happens in the short term, you will be rewarded holding 100% stocks.
For the record I am a 60/40 guy because it enables me to look at these big drops with the proper perspective and stay the course. For those of you who are not there yet, stop looking at the market and stop looking at your portfolio. Ten years from now, you will not even notice what the market did today.

I jumped around for a while and finally got sick of doing that, it was driving me crazy. I settled for the one fund portfolio and put it all in the Vanguard Balanced Index Fund. The main reason I went that route because my wife doesn't really show any interest in this stuff and if I predecease her, I want her to not have to worry about doing anything other than taking out the money when she needs it.
The Vanguard Balanced Index does all the work for you, in fact, I don't even look at it and 60/40 passes the sleep test for me.

I guess Jack was onto something. I don't hold international, however, I advised my 23 year old daughter to simply put it all the Vanguard Target Date Fund which was one of her 401k options. She has many years to invest, so I don't know what the future will look like that far out, so for her I think it is better to diversify as much as possible.

It may be a huge psychological difference, but having 10% more in stocks in your portfolio will not make a difference in returns if you are a long term investor. Re: Reaction to Market
It was a non-event. I didn't even look at my portfolio yet.

Also, thanks to living below and within my means, it wasn't a tragic event as it was for many. Can't wait to see my large 401K all in the Vanguard Balanced Index Fund (for life). Way to go, Steve. :happy Your post also buried the lede: living below and within your means. What I love about bogleheadism is what is...
