Re: Does Umbrella Policy cover Fire Damages

Yes, I believe so, as long as someone in the home didn't intentionally set the fire. If an accidental fire at your home causes damage to a neighbor's home and they or their insurance company comes after you for damages, that's when your personal liability coverage under your homeowner's insurance comes into play; and if that's popped, your umbrella insurance. Both your insurance carrier and the neighbor's insurance carrier will investigate the fire/claim and apportion blame and liability (if any). Of course this may be state specific and/or policy specific. It's best to thoroughly review one's policies and ask your insurance company any questions you may have to be sure. I'm certainly no insurance expert.

One sleepless night, I found Cheers airing on the Hallmark channel of all places (first time I found anything to watch on that channel). I caught it from the beginning of season 1 and started taping episodes to watch at my leisure (on season 3 now). IMO, better than anything else currently on tv.

Since you've made up your mind to buy this vehicle and you're looking at 7% to finance, then yes, paying cash is likely the better way to go. You could also pay 1/2 in cash and finance the rest (paying it off shortly afterward) or try to charge the rest to a new credit card (or two) at 0% or whatever low introductory % rates you can find, or a nice cash back card, especially if you can pay it off within a short time period.

My Honda still has life left in it. I’m 65. If I don’t take money from my IRA for the cash purchase of the car, then I don’t have cash.
If you're set on purchasing now, maybe 1/2 from the tIRA and finance the other 1/2 or check for new credit card offers at 0% to finance the other half?

We'll keep it until it gives up the ghost. Thanks! We currently have a 2000 Odyssey which we love to but wasn't recently rear ended so not sure putting the money into fixing damaged hatch door, etc is worth it. It only has 135k or so miles so it is hard to let go of. But prices on used vans is still crazy expensive for mileage! No tranny issues with your 2003? We luckily haven't had any with ours, even though supposedly it's a problem with these years. No issues whatsoever on our 2003 Odyssey. We have a neighbor with a 2002 Odyssey and he has chippin...

Just my experience - be careful replacing working appliances, for example "old" washer and dryers. Our current fridge is 20 years old and works perfectly.

Re: To the Posters w/ Children That Spend Less Than $800/Month on Groceries -- HOW?!?!

When the kids lived at home, we were a family of 4 and spent $600/month on food (included groceries/restaurants). That was years ago. We ate very well - homemade meals 6 days/week with fish or meat at dinner, ate at nice restaurants 1-2x/month, no alcohol, coffee brewed at home, and we grew veggies/fruit in our garden to offset costs (tomatoes, green beans, peppers, eggplant, carrots, squash, onions, watermelon, etc). With today's inflation, I would imagine it would be more than $720-800/month to feed everyone if our kids were still young. We live in a MCOL area, shop at Costco (no waste because we freeze what's not immediately used), Trader Joe's & Walmart (occasionally Publix but only if there's a good sale because they're pricey). I ...

I have a 2% deductible on my HO coverage and would not file a claim for something less than catastrophic. I would keep comp and collision on both vehicles with 1K deductible and drop rental coverage and roadside assistance. It's not a good idea to have roadside assistance with your insurance company (many insurers treat towing as an at-fault claim and it will get recorded on your C.L.U.E. report). Per Clark Howard, many credit cards offer a roadside assistance option, as well as some mobile carriers (T-Mobile and Verizon) and there's always AAA. Google tells me that insurance companies only start caring if you use your towing coverage more than once or twice per year. Roadside assistance on my car insurance is $6. AAA is $60. Roadside assistance through your auto carrier may be cheaper, but AAA membership coverage is more comprehensive. AAA me...

The 12 month clock starts the month you purchase the bond. Personally, I deliver the gifts the 1st of the year to get them out of my gift box.

What is your grandmother's living situation? Does she own and live in her own home? Perhaps there is potential in a (temporary) living situation where you pay rent and utilities, etc., to her which is likely less than you pay now and which helps both of you financially. Additionally, your increased physical presence may be of help and comfort to her.

Generally not. Retailers do not usually offer refunds on gift cards, regardless if the funds were stolen.

If you locate the receipt, you could take it back to Home Depot and speak with the manager to see if they can tell you when the funds were stolen from the card... Perhaps if the funds were stolen BEFORE the time stamp on your HD receipt, they may work something out with you.

This is what insurance is for.
It's just too bad they didn't take photos...they have phones and there are photos of everything else on them :)
If the person they hit mischaracterizes the accident, then you'll have to have them give statements to rebut.
My point earlier was that if the son is a named excluded driver and/or not a co-owner of the vehicle, he cannot give permission for his friend to drive the car.

Is your unlicensed son a named excluded driver on your policy? If so, I would think that he could not give permission for his friend to drive your car and YOU did not give his friend permission to drive your car... IANAL and it's just my opinion, but I would think that depending in which state you live, its laws and your auto insurance policy language, you may have a problem (not to mention your son's friend). I would definitely contact his parents to put them on alert, if nothing else and speak with your local agent, if you have one.
