A crude estimation isn't that hard. Do you know what your marginal tax rate (tax bracket) will be when ignoring the RMD? Take that % and multiply it by the RMD amount and that is about how much extra tax you'll pay with the RMD included in income.

It is a crude guess because the RMD itself could push you into the next tax bracket either partially or wholly.

AavocadoArdvark wrote: Sat Mar 16, 2024 7:20 amMy questions are about where to hold stock vs bond funds...
As a general rule, try to keep fixed income (such as bonds) in tIRAs and anything that might eventually become a tIRA (like a t401k). Try to keep efficient stock funds in rIRA and taxable. If you can't fit all your bond-like holdings in tIRA & t401k and need to use taxable accounts, then determine whether to use tax-exempt bond funds vs something like Treasuries (the earning from which may be state-tax exempt.)

Sounds like you are on the right path overall.

This is not true everywhere. My bank has a change counting machine in the lobby. Dump in a bucket of change and it prints out a reciept that you hand to the teller to deposit.
That is my experience as well. I don't know of any local financial institutions anymore that will accept wrapped coins. Too many slugs, foreign coins, etc. They all have coin counters now. Just like they have automatic currency counters to look for counterfeits.

Started investing in the 1970s. Subscribed to Money Magazine. TRP would run full-and-half-page ads. VG ran tiny little ads so I missed them. I called up my Brother-In-Law who was a bond trader on Wall Street and asked him what to do. He said that TRP was okay but make sure I only bought "no-load" products.

That was my introduction. Started up with VG in 1991 and switched completely to VG in 2002.

"Service advisors" at dealerships are on commission. Reason enough. Another one. They often won't let you speak to the mechanic. (True at some independent shops, as well.) Another one. Look at all those people at the dealership front area sitting around in front of computer monitors. They have to be paid. Another one. Dealership shops have a target amount to bill customers for every car that comes in. An Audi shop would want to try to get probably $1500 every time a car is brought in. In for an oil change, out for whatever they can find and sell. Of course, for a car under warranty, it's a different matter. One way to get an idea of whether an independent shop is good is to ask them how they determine the air pressure to put in t...

How old are you? To some extent the fixed income duration plays into what you may want to do (if younger then a longer term duration is okay).

What is your purpose for the fixed income allocation? Income? Portfolio stability? Both?

Then there is the issue of quality. Lower quality bonds tend to pay higher interest for the risk you accept. Currently the yield curve is somewhat inverted so that isn't a hard and fast rule.

Probably an error in the way the database was polled to link the person's name with "an address". I'd simply write "no such person" on the envelope and put it back in the USPS system. It is illegal to open mail not addressed to YOUR NAME, regardless of the address shown.

An example of using your address for fraud could be someone who has actual access to your mailbox (such as curbside) who uses your address to apply for a credit card for example, and hoping they get to your mailbox before you do each day to "check the mail".

Re: Wire Fraud in Real Estate Transaction - What Next?

Before you get a new lawyer, how about simply ask your current lawyer what his or her plan is to clear the lien on your property. I.e., make it clear you know that was what you hired him or her to do and that is what is going to happen, whether voluntarily or involuntarily. Unless and until you get an unsatisfactory answer to that question/demand, there is no reason to spend extra money and possibly make a bad situation even more combustible. And that is coming from a lawyer. Mistakes happen and it is human nature for people to stick their head in the sand when they do. But you don’t always need a lawyer to unstick it, and shouldn’t need to when already dealing with a lawyer that knows what the deal is. +1. I was wondering if this isn't a ...

Re: Thinking of moving to Denver

If I am 66, 40k SS income and 24k 401k income, the 40k SS would have no tax, 24k would be taxable? You have to fill out the CO worksheet to know precisely how this works for your situation. The basic retirement income exemption at your age is $24k. But some or all of it could be used up by the SS exemption. The most SS that is taxed federally is 85% so if that 85% # applies to your situation then you'd be looking to exempt $34k of the SS income at the state level and you can do that specifically because of the 2021 tax law change. But that $34k exceeds the $24k basic retirement income exemption effectively using it up so yes, all of your 401k income would be taxable at the state level. Same thing happens with RMDs for example. Re: Thinking of moving to Denver

I have family in Denver and have visited frequently over the past ten years. Lots of things have changed. Water is becoming a problem and restrictions are applied in the summer. Air quality is more of an issue especially with any wildfire activity. Without becoming political taxes are rising and statistically crime especially auto theft is increasing. I would advise renting for a year or two as it would be easier to leave if it didn’t suit your needs. If I did move to the area would look at living in Evergreen or Castle Rock or Conifer. Boulder and Golden are both nice too. Houses in these areas have become very expensive and popular; the real estate market seems pretty tight with low availability of desirable properties to me. I believe t...
